2024-06-28selftests: mirror: mirror_test(): Allow exact count of packetsPetr Machata
The mirroring selftests work by sending ICMP traffic between two hosts. Along the way, this traffic is mirrored to a gretap netdevice, and counter taps are then installed strategically along the path of the mirrored traffic to verify the mirroring took place. The problem with this is that besides mirroring the primary traffic, any other service traffic is mirrored as well. At the same time, because the tests need to work in HW-offloaded scenarios, the ability of the device to do arbitrary packet inspection should not be taken for granted. Most tests therefore simply use matchall, one uses flower to match on IP address. As a result, the selftests are noisy, because besides the primary ICMP traffic, any amount of other service traffic is mirrored as well. mirror_test() accommodated this noisiness by giving the counters an allowance of several packets. But in the previous patch, where possible, counter taps were changed to match only on an exact ICMP message. At least in those cases, we can demand an exact number of packets to match. Where the tap is installed on a connective netdevice, the exact matching is not practical (though with u32, anything is possible). In those places, there should still be some leeway -- and probably bigger than before, because experience shows that these tests are very noisy. To that end, change mirror_test() so that it can be either called with an exact number to expect, or with an expression. Where leeway is needed, adjust callers to pass a ">= 10" instead of mere 10. The mirroring selftests work by sending ICMP traffic between two hosts. Along the way, this traffic is mirrored to a gretap netdevice, and counter taps are then installed strategically along the path of the mirrored traffic to verify the mirroring took place. The problem with this is that besides mirroring the primary traffic, any other service traffic is mirrored as well. At the same time, because the tests need to work in HW-offloaded scenarios, the ability of the device to do arbitrary packet inspection should not be taken for granted. Most tests therefore simply use matchall, one uses flower to match on IP address. As a result, the selftests are noisy, because besides the primary ICMP traffic, any amount of other service traffic is mirrored as well. However, often the counter tap is installed at the remote end of the gretap tunnel. Since this is a SW-datapath scenario anyway, we can make the filter arbitrarily accurate. Thus in this patch, add parameters forward_type and backward_type to several mirroring test helpers, as some other helpers already have. Then change do_test_span_dir_ips() to instead of installing one generic tap and using it for test in both directions, install the tap for each direction separately, matching on the ICMP type given by these parameters. 2024-06-28selftests: libs: Expand "$@" where possiblePetr Machata
In some functions, argument-forwarding through "$@" without listing the individual arguments explicitly is fundamental to the operation of a function. E.g. xfail_on_veth() should be able to run various tests in the fail-to-xfail regime, and usage of "$@" is appropriate as an abstraction mechanism. For functions such as simple_if_init(), $@ is a handy way to pass an array. In other functions, it's merely a mechanism to save some typing, which however ends up obscuring the real arguments and makes life hard for those that end up reading the code. This patch adds some of the implicit function arguments and correspondingly expands $@'s. In several cases this will come in handy as following patches adjust the parameter lists. 2021-11-10selftests: forwarding: Fix packet matching in mirroring selftestsPetr Machata
In commit 6de6e46d27ef ("cls_flower: Fix inability to match GRE/IPIP packets"), cls_flower was fixed to match an outer packet of a tunneled packet as would be expected, rather than dissecting to the inner packet and matching on that. This fix uncovered several issues in packet matching in mirroring selftests: - in mirror_gre_bridge_1d_vlan.sh and mirror_gre_vlan_bridge_1q.sh, the vlan_ethtype match is copied around as "ip", even as some of the tests are running over ip6gretap. This is fixed by using an "ipv6" for vlan_ethtype in the ip6gretap tests. - in mirror_gre_changes.sh, a filter to count GRE packets is set up to match TTL of 50. This used to trigger in the offloaded datapath, where the envelope TTL was matched, but not in the software datapath, which considered TTL of the inner packet. Now that both match consistently, all the packets were double-counted. This is fixed by marking the filter as skip_hw, leaving only the SW datapath component active. 2021-04-23selftests: mlxsw: Fix mausezahn invocation in ERSPAN scale testPetr Machata
The mirror_gre_scale test creates as many ERSPAN sessions as the underlying chip supports, and tests that they all work. In order to determine that it issues a stream of ICMP packets and checks if they are mirrored as expected. However, the mausezahn invocation missed the -6 flag to identify the use of IPv6 protocol, and was sending ICMP messages over IPv6, as opposed to ICMP6. It also didn't pass an explicit source IP address, which apparently worked at some point in the past, but does not anymore. To fix these issues, extend the function mirror_test() in mirror_lib by detecting the IPv6 protocol addresses, and using a different ICMP scheme. Currently, mausezahn delay parameter in mirror_test() is specified with 'ms' units. mausezahn versions before 0.6.5 interpret 'ms' as seconds and therefore the tests that use mirror_test() take a very long time to complete. Resolve this by specifying 'msec' units. 2020-05-30selftests: forwarding: mirror_lib: Use mausezahnPetr Machata
Using ping in tests is error-prone, because ping is too smart. On a flaky system (notably in a simulator), when packets don't come quickly enough, more pings are sent, and that throws off counters. Instead use mausezahn to generate ICMP echo request packets. That allows us to send them in quicker succession as well, because the reason the ping was made slow in the first place was to make the tests work on simulated systems. When running in an environment with poor performance (such as a simulator), processing mirrored packets can take a while. Evaluating the condition too soon leads to spurious "seen 9, expected 10" failures as the last packet doesn't have enough time to get mirrored and the mirror to arrive and bump the observed counters. The current ping intervals are too short for running mirroring tests in simulator. This leads to ping sending a follow-up ping before the reply arrives, thus sending more than the requested 10 ICMP requests. Those are mirrored, and over a certain threshold the test case run is considered a failure, because too much traffic is observed. 2018-07-10selftests: forwarding: mirror_lib: Tighten up VLAN capturePetr Machata
The function do_test_span_vlan_dir_ips() is used for testing whether mirrored packets are VLAN-encapsulated. But since it only considers VLAN encapsulation, it may end up matching unmirrored ARP traffic as well. One consequence is a rare failure of mirror_gre_vlan_bridge_1q's test_gretap_untagged_egress. Decreasing ping cadence in mirror_test() makes the problem easily reproducible. Therefore tighten up the match criterion to only count those 802.1q packets where the next header is IP. For non-GRE mirroring tests, a functions along the lines of do_test_span_gre_dir_ips() and test_span_gre_dir_ips() are necessary, but such that they don't assume tunnels are involved. Extract the code from mirror_gre_lib.sh to mirror_lib.sh and convert to just use a given device without assuming it's named "h3-$tundev". Convert the two above-mentioned functions to wrappers that pass along the correct device name. Add test_span_dir() and fail_test_span_dir() to round up the API for use by following patches. To simplify implementation of mirror-to-gretap tests, extend lib.sh with several new functions that might potentially be useful more broadly (although right now the mirroring tests will be the only client). Also add mirror_lib.sh with code useful for mirroring tests, mirror_gre_lib.sh with code specifically useful for mirror-to-gretap tests, and mirror_gre_topo.sh that primes a given test with a good baseline topology that the test can then tweak to its liking.
