2025-07-11ALSA: hda: Move widget capability macros into hdaudio.hTakashi Iwai
The get_wcaps() and co are used not only by HD-audio core but also other driver code, hence it'd be better to put into the common header instead of local.h. OTOH, there are macros of the same name like get_wcaps() that are still used in sound/pci/hda/* locally, and those conflict with each other. So we need to rename get_wcaps() (to be moved from hda-core) with the proper snd_hdac prefix for avoiding name conflicts, and define in the common hdaudio.h. 2025-05-22ALSA: core: fix up bus match const issues.Greg Kroah-Hartman
In commit d69d80484598 ("driver core: have match() callback in struct bus_type take a const *"), the match bus callback was changed to have the driver be a const pointer. Unfortunately that const attribute was thrown away when container_of() is called, which is not correct and was not caught by the compiler due to how container_of() is implemented. Fix this up by correctly preserving the const attribute of the driver passed to the bus match function which requires the hdac_driver match function to also take a const pointer for the driver structure. snd_hdac_stream_get_spbmaxfifo() was originally added in 2015 in commit ee8bc4df1b5a ("ALSA: hdac: Add support to enable SPIB for hdac ext stream") when it was originally called snd_hdac_ext_stream_set_spbmaxfifo, it was renamed snd_hdac_ext_stream_get_spbmaxfifo shortly after and was finally renamed to snd_hdac_stream_get_spbmaxfifo in 2022. But it was never used. Remove it. 2024-04-18ALSA: hda: Introduce flags to force commands via PIO instead of CORBPeter Ujfalusi
Add AZX_DCAPS_PIO_COMMANDS quirk (bit 31) and use_pio_for_commands flag to be able to select PIO mode as alternative for CORB based command sending while retaining the RIRB functionality to receive unsolicited responses. This mode differs from the azx single_cmd mode when RIRB is disabled. The mixed mode is needed on Lunar Lake family because it is recommended to use Immediate Command Response (PIO mode) instead of CORB for HDA commands. 2023-12-30ALSA: mark all struct bus_type as constGreg Kroah-Hartman
Now that the driver core can properly handle constant struct bus_type, move all of the sound subsystem struct bus_type structures as const, placing them into read-only memory which can not be modified at runtime. Note, this fixes a duplicate definition of ac97_bus_type, which somehow was declared extern in a .h file, and then static as a prototype in a .c file, and then properly later on in the same .c file. Amazing that no compiler warning ever showed up for this. Introduce a set of functions that ultimately facilite SDxFMT-related calculations in atomic manner: First, introduce snd_pcm_subformat_width() and snd_pcm_hw_params_bits() helpers that separate the base functionality from the HDAudio-specific one. snd_hdac_format_normalize() - format converter. S20_LE, S24_LE and their unsigned and BE friends are invalid from HDAudio perspective but still can be specified as function argument due to compatibility reasons. snd_hdac_stream_format_bits() - obtain just the bits-per-sample value. Does not ignore subformat and msbits parameters. snd_hdac_stream_format() and snd_hdac_spdif_stream_format() - obtain the SDxFMT value given the audio format parameters. The former is stripped away of spdif-related information. Useful for users that do not care about them. AudioDSP firmware is the one who kicks SDxFIFOS calculation when a stream is decoupled mode. During firmware bring up procedure, there is no firmware running and the code-loading stream is always a decoupled one. So, there is none to trigger the calculation and we end up with false-positive timeout (-110) messages. 2022-10-20ALSA/ASoC: hda: move SPIB/DRMS functionality from ext layerPierre-Louis Bossart
The SPIB and DRMS capabilities are orthogonal to the DSP enablement and can be used whether the stream is coupled or not. The existing code partitioning makes limited sense, the capabilities are parsed at the sound/hda level but helpers are located in sound/hda/ext. This patch moves all the SPIB/DRMS functionality to the sound/hda layer. This reduces the complexity of the sound/hda/ext layer which is now limited to handling the multi-link extensions and stream coupling/decoupling helpers. Note that this is an iso-functionality code move and rename, the HDaudio legacy driver would need additional changes to make use of these capabilities. 2022-09-20ALSA: hda: ext: fix locking in stream_releasePierre-Louis Bossart
The snd_hdac_ext_stream_release() routine uses the bus reg_lock, but releases it before calling snd_hdac_stream_release() where the bus reg_lock is taken again. This creates a timing window where the link stream release could test an invalid 'opened' boolean status and fail to recouple the host and link parts. Fix by exposing a locked version of snd_hdac_stream_release() and use it without releasing the spinlock. 2021-02-08ALSA: hda: add link_power op to hdac_bus_opsKai Vehmanen
The extended HDA bus (hdac_ext) provides interfaces for more fine-grained control of individual links than what plain HDA provides for. Links can be powered off when they are not used and if all links are released, controller can shut down the command DMA. These interfaces are currently not used by common HDA codec drivers. When a HDA codec is runtime suspended, it calls snd_hdac_codec_link_down(), but there is no link to the HDA extended bus, and on controller side the links are shut down only when all codecs are suspended. This patch adds link_power() to hdac_bus ops. Controllers using the HDA extended core, can use this to plug in snd_hdac_ext_bus_link_power() to implement more fine-grained control of link power. No change is needed for plain HDA controllers nor to existing HDA codec drivers. This patch introduces a structure member to store the default factor of '8'. If any HW wants to use a different value, this member can be easily updated. 2020-01-20ALSA: hda: Apply aligned MMIO access only conditionallyTakashi Iwai
It turned out that the recent simplification of HD-audio bus access helpers caused a regression on the virtual HD-audio device on QEMU with ARM platforms. The driver got a CORB/RIRB timeout and couldn't probe any codecs. The essential difference that caused a problem was the enforced aligned MMIO accesses by simplification. Since snd-hda-tegra driver is enabled on ARM, it enables CONFIG_SND_HDA_ALIGNED_MMIO, which makes the all HD-audio drivers using the aligned MMIO accesses. While this is mandatory for snd-hda-tegra, it seems that snd-hda-intel on ARM gets broken by this access pattern. For addressing the regression, this patch introduces a new flag, aligned_mmio, to hdac_bus object, and applies the aligned MMIO only when this flag is set. This change affects only platforms with CONFIG_SND_HDA_ALIGNED_MMIO set, i.e. mostly only for ARM platforms. Unfortunately the patch became a big bigger than it should be, just because the former calls didn't take hdac_bus object in the argument, hence we had to extend the call patterns. 2020-01-13ALSA: hda: Manage concurrent reg access more properlyTakashi Iwai
In the commit 8e85def5723e ("ALSA: hda: enable regmap internal locking"), we re-enabled the regmap lock due to the reported regression that showed the possible concurrent accesses. It was a temporary workaround, and there are still a few opened races even after the revert. In this patch, we cover those still opened windows with a proper mutex lock and disable the regmap internal lock again. First off, the patch introduces a new snd_hdac_device.regmap_lock mutex that is applied for each snd_hdac_regmap_*() call, including read, write and update helpers. The mutex is applied carefully so that it won't block the self-power-up procedure in the helper function. Also, this assures the protection for the accesses without regmap, too. The snd_hdac_regmap_update_raw() is refactored to use the standard regmap_update_bits_check() function instead of the open-code. The non-regmap case is still open-coded but it's an easy part. The all read and write operations are in the single mutex protection, so it's now race-free. In addition, a couple of new helper functions are added: snd_hdac_regmap_update_raw_once() and snd_hdac_regmap_sync(). Both are called from HD-audio legacy driver. The former is to initialize the given verb bits but only once when it's not initialized yet. Due to this condition, the function invokes regcache_cache_only(), and it's now performed inside the regmap_lock (formerly it was racy) too. The latter function is for simply invoking regcache_sync() inside the regmap_lock, which is called from the codec resume call path. Along with that, the HD-audio codec driver code is slightly modified / simplified to adapt those new functions. And finally, snd_hdac_regmap_read_raw(), *_write_raw(), etc are rewritten with the helper macro. It's just for simplification because the code logic is identical among all those functions. Now most of the get_response handling became quite similar between HDA-core and legacy drivers, and the only differences are: - the handling of extra-long polling delay for some codecs - the debug message for the stalled communication and both are worth to share in the common code. This patch unifies the code into snd_hdac_bus_get_response(), and use this from the legacy get_response callback. It results in a good amount of code reduction in the end. The HD-audio CORB/RIRB communication was programmed in a way that was documented in the reference in decades ago, which is essentially a polling in the waiter side. It's working fine but costs CPU cycles on some platforms that support only slow communications. Also, for some platforms that had unreliable communications, we put longer wait time (2 ms), which accumulate quite long time if you execute many verbs in a shot (e.g. at the initialization or resume phase). This patch attempts to improve the situation by introducing the standard waitqueue in the RIRB waiter side instead of polling. The test results on my machine show significant improvements. The time spent for "cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#*" were changed like: * Intel SKL + Realtek codec before the patch: 0.00user 0.04system 0:00.10elapsed 40.0%CPU after the patch: 0.00user 0.01system 0:00.10elapsed 10.0%CPU * Nvidia GP107GL + Nvidia HDMI codec before the patch: 0.00user 0.00system 0:02.76elapsed 0.0%CPU after the patch: 0.00user 0.00system 0:00.01elapsed 17.0%CPU So, for Intel chips, the total time is same, while the total time is greatly reduced (from 2.76 to 0.01s) for Nvidia chips. The only negative data here is the increase of CPU time for Nvidia, but this is the unavoidable cost for faster wakeups, supposedly. The recent commit in HD-audio stream management for changing the stripe control seems causing a regression on some platforms. The stripe control is currently used only by HDMI codec, and applying the stripe mask unconditionally may lead to scratchy and static noises as seen on some MacBooks. For addressing the regression, this patch changes the stream management code to apply the stripe mask conditionally only when the codec driver requested. 2019-08-08ALSA: hda: Direct MMIO accessesTakashi Iwai
HD-audio drivers access to the mmio registers indirectly via the corresponding bus->io_ops callbacks. This is because some platform (notably Tegra SoC) requires the word-aligned access. But it's rather a rare case, and other platforms suffer from the penalties by indirect calls unnecessarily. This patch is an attempt to optimize and cleanup for this situation. Now the special aligned access is used only when a new kconfig CONFIG_SND_HDA_ALIGNED_MMIO is set. And the HD-audio core itself provides the aligned MMIO access helpers instead of the driver side. If Kconfig isn't set (as default), the standard helpers like readl() or writel() are used directly. A couple of places in ASoC Intel drivers have the access via io_ops reg_writel(), and they are replaced with the direct writel() calls. And now with this patch, the whole bus->io_ops becomes empty, so it's dropped completely. The bus initialization functions are changed accordingly as well to drop the whole bus->io_ops. The HD-audio core allocates and releases pages via driver's specific dma_alloc_pages and dma_free_pages ops defined in bus->io_ops. This was because some platforms require the uncached pages and the handling of page flags had to be done locally in the driver code. Since the recent change in ALSA core memory allocator, we can simply pass SNDRV_DMA_TYPE_DEV_UC for the uncached pages, and the only difference became about this type to be passed to the core allocator. That is, it's good time for cleaning up the mess. This patch changes the allocation code in HD-audio core to call the core allocator directly so that we get rid of dma_alloc_pages and dma_free_pages io_ops. If a driver needs the uncached pages, it has to set bus->dma_type right after the bus initialization. This is merely a code refactoring and shouldn't bring any behavior changes. Along with the recent fix for the races of snd_hdac_refresh_widgets() it turned out that the instantiation of widgets sysfs at snd_hdac_sysfs_reinit() could cause a race. The race itself was already covered later by extending the mutex protection range, the commit 98482377dc72 ("ALSA: hda: Fix widget_mutex incomplete protection"), but this also indicated that the call of *_reinit() is basically superfluous, as the widgets shall be created sooner or later from snd_hdac_device_register(). This patch removes the redundant call of snd_hdac_sysfs_reinit() at first. By this removal, the sysfs argument itself in snd_hdac_refresh_widgets() becomes superfluous, too, because the only case sysfs=false is always with codec->widgets=NULL.
