The purpose of resetting the TX queue is to reset the byte and packet count as well as to clear the software flow control XOFF bit. MediaTek developers pointed out that netdev_reset_queue would only resets queue 0 of the network device. Queues that are not reset may cause unexpected issues. Packets may stop being sent after reset and "transmit timeout" log may be displayed. Import fix from MediaTek's SDK to resolve this issue. 2025-05-01net: ethernet: mtk_eth_soc: add support for MT7988 internal 2.5G PHYDaniel Golle
The MediaTek MT7988 SoC comes with an single built-in Ethernet PHY for 2500Base-T/1000Base-T/100Base-TX/10Base-T link partners in addition to the built-in 1GE switch. The built-in PHY only supports full duplex. Add muxes allowing to select GMAC2->2.5G PHY path and add basic support for XGMAC as the built-in 2.5G PHY is internally connected via XGMII. The XGMAC features will also be used by 5GBase-R, 10GBase-R and USXGMII SerDes modes which are going to be added once support for standalone PCS drivers is in place. In order to make use of the built-in 2.5G PHY the appropriate PHY driver as well as (proprietary) PHY firmware has to be present as well. If the mtk_poll_rx() function detects the MTK_RESETTING flag, it will jump to release_desc and refill the high word of the SDP on the 4GB RFB. Subsequently, mtk_rx_clean will process an incorrect SDP, leading to a panic. Add patch from MediaTek's SDK to resolve this. When removing the clock bits for clocks which aren't used by the Ethernet driver their names should also have been removed from the mtk_clks_source_name array. 2024-11-03dim: pass dim_sample to net_dim() by referenceCaleb Sander Mateos
net_dim() is currently passed a struct dim_sample argument by value. struct dim_sample is 24 bytes. Since this is greater 16 bytes, x86-64 passes it on the stack. All callers have already initialized dim_sample on the stack, so passing it by value requires pushing a duplicated copy to the stack. Either witing to the stack and immediately reading it, or perhaps dereferencing addresses relative to the stack pointer in a chain of push instructions, seems to perform quite poorly. After commit 0edb555a65d1 ("platform: Make platform_driver::remove() return void") .remove() is (again) the right callback to implement for platform drivers. Convert all platform drivers below drivers/net/ethernet to use .remove(), with the eventual goal to drop struct platform_driver::remove_new(). As .remove() and .remove_new() have the same prototypes, conversion is done by just changing the structure member name in the driver initializer. 2024-07-25net: mediatek: Fix potential NULL pointer dereference in dummy net_device ↵Breno Leitao
handling Move the freeing of the dummy net_device from mtk_free_dev() to mtk_remove(). Previously, if alloc_netdev_dummy() failed in mtk_probe(), eth->dummy_dev would be NULL. The error path would then call mtk_free_dev(), which in turn called free_netdev() assuming dummy_dev was allocated (but it was not), potentially causing a NULL pointer dereference. By moving free_netdev() to mtk_remove(), we ensure it's only called when mtk_probe() has succeeded and dummy_dev is fully allocated. This addresses a potential NULL pointer dereference detected by Smatch[1]. Some devices with MediaTek SoCs don't use the first but only the second MAC in the chip. Especially with MT7981 which got a built-in 1GE PHY connected to the second MAC this is quite common. Make sure to reset and enable PSE also in those cases by skipping gaps using 'continue' instead of aborting the loop using 'break'. Add the missing pieces to allow multiple PPEs units, one for each GMAC. mtk_gdm_config has been modified to work on targted mac ID, the inner loop moved outside of the function to allow unrelated operations like setting the MAC's PPE index. Introduce a sanity check in flow_offload_replace to account for non-MTK ingress devices. Additional field 'ppe_idx' was added to struct mtk_mac in order to keep track on the assigned PPE unit. 2024-06-05net: ethernet: mtk_eth_soc: handle dma buffer size soc specificFrank Wunderlich
The mainline MTK ethernet driver suffers long time from rarly but annoying tx queue timeouts. We think that this is caused by fixed dma sizes hardcoded for all SoCs. We suspect this problem arises from a low level of free TX DMADs, the TX Ring alomost full. The transmit timeout is caused by the Tx queue not waking up. The Tx queue stops when the free counter is less than ring->thres, and it will wake up once the free counter is greater than ring->thres. If the CPU is too late to wake up the Tx queues, it may cause a transmit timeout. Therefore, we increased the TX and RX DMADs to improve this error situation. Use the dma-size implementation from SDK in a per SoC manner. In difference to SDK we have no RSS feature yet, so all RX/TX sizes should be raised from 512 to 2048 byte except fqdma on mt7988 to avoid the tx timeout issue. 2023-10-05net: ethernet: mediatek: disable irq before schedule napiChristian Marangi
While searching for possible refactor of napi_schedule_prep and __napi_schedule it was notice that the mtk eth driver disable the interrupt for rx and tx AFTER napi is scheduled. While this is a very hard to repro case it might happen to have situation where the interrupt is disabled and never enabled again as the napi completes and the interrupt is enabled before. This is caused by the fact that a napi driven by interrupt expect a logic with: 1. interrupt received. napi prepared -> interrupt disabled -> napi scheduled 2. napi triggered. ring cleared -> interrupt enabled -> wait for new interrupt To prevent this case, disable the interrupt BEFORE the napi is scheduled. 2023-09-20net: ethernet: mediatek: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes.
