2008-05-03unified (weak) sys_pipe implementationUlrich Drepper
This replaces the duplicated arch-specific versions of "sys_pipe()" with one unified implementation. This removes almost 250 lines of duplicated code. It's marked __weak, so that *if* an architecture wants to override the default implementation it can do so by simply having its own replacement version, since many architectures use alternate calling conventions for the 'pipe()' system call for legacy reasons (ie traditional UNIX implementations often return the two file descriptors in registers) I still haven't changed the cris version even though Linus says the BKL isn't needed. 2008-04-29iomap: fix 64 bits resources on 32 bitsBenjamin Herrenschmidt
Almost all implementations of pci_iomap() in the kernel, including the generic lib/iomap.c one, copies the content of a struct resource into unsigned long's which will break on 32 bits platforms with 64 bits resources. This fixes all definitions of pci_iomap() to use resource_size_t. I also "fixed" the 64bits arch for consistency. 2008-04-28mm: have zonelist contains structs with both a zone pointer and zone_idxMel Gorman
Filtering zonelists requires very frequent use of zone_idx(). This is costly as it involves a lookup of another structure and a substraction operation. As the zone_idx is often required, it should be quickly accessible. The node idx could also be stored here if it was found that accessing zone->node is significant which may be the case on workloads where nodemasks are heavily used. This patch introduces a struct zoneref to store a zone pointer and a zone index. The zonelist then consists of an array of these struct zonerefs which are looked up as necessary. Helpers are given for accessing the zone index as well as the node index. 2008-04-28mm: use two zonelist that are filtered by GFP maskMel Gorman
Currently a node has two sets of zonelists, one for each zone type in the system and a second set for GFP_THISNODE allocations. Based on the zones allowed by a gfp mask, one of these zonelists is selected. All of these zonelists consume memory and occupy cache lines. This patch replaces the multiple zonelists per-node with two zonelists. The first contains all populated zones in the system, ordered by distance, for fallback allocations when the target/preferred node has no free pages. The second contains all populated zones in the node suitable for GFP_THISNODE allocations. An iterator macro is introduced called for_each_zone_zonelist() that interates through each zone allowed by the GFP flags in the selected zonelist. Commit 721fdf34167580ff98263c74cead8871d76936e6 introduced a subtle bug by accidently removing the "static" from iodc_dbuf. This resulted in, what appeared to be, a trap without *current set to a task. Probably the result of a trap in real mode while calling firmware. Also do other misc clean ups. This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. 2008-02-07Introduce flags for reserve_bootmem()Bernhard Walle
This patchset adds a flags variable to reserve_bootmem() and uses the BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE flag in crashkernel reservation code to detect collisions between crashkernel area and already used memory. This patch: Change the reserve_bootmem() function to accept a new flag BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE. If that flag is set, the function returns with -EBUSY if the memory already has been reserved in the past. This is to avoid conflicts. Because that code runs before SMP initialisation, there's no race condition inside reserve_bootmem_core(). Move the instrumentation Kconfig to arch/Kconfig for architecture dependent options - oprofile - kprobes and init/Kconfig for architecture independent options - profiling - markers Remove the "Instrumentation Support" menu. Everything moves to "General setup". Delete the kernel/Kconfig.instrumentation file. Linus: On the per-architecture side, I do think it would be better to *not* have internal architecture knowledge in a generic file, and as such a line like depends on X86_32 || IA64 || PPC || S390 || SPARC64 || X86_64 || AVR32 really shouldn't exist in a file like kernel/Kconfig.instrumentation. It would be much better to do depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES in that generic file, and then architectures that do support it would just have a bool ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES default y in *their* architecture files. That would seem to be much more logical, and is readable both for arch maintainers *and* for people who have no clue - and don't care - about which architecture is supposed to support which interface... Changelog: Actually, I know I gave this as the magic incantation, but now that I see it, I realize that I should have told you to just use config ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES def_bool y instead, which is a bit denser. 2008-01-30spinlock: lockbreak cleanupNick Piggin
The break_lock data structure and code for spinlocks is quite nasty. Not only does it double the size of a spinlock but it changes locking to a potentially less optimal trylock. Put all of that under CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, and introduce a __raw_spin_is_contended that uses the lock data itself to determine whether there are waiters on the lock, to be used if CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK is not set. Rename need_lockbreak to spin_needbreak, make it use spin_is_contended to decouple it from the spinlock implementation, and make it typesafe (rwlocks do not have any need_lockbreak sites -- why do they even get bloated up with that break_lock then?).
