With 802.11 encapsulation offloading, ieee80211_tx_h_select_key() is called on 802.3 frames. In that case do not try to use skb data as valid 802.11 headers. 2025-07-18wifi: mac80211: Do not schedule stopped TXQsAlexander Wetzel
Ignore TXQs with the flag IEEE80211_TXQ_STOP when scheduling a queue. The flag is only set after all fragments have been dequeued and won't allow dequeueing other frames as long as the flag is set. For drivers using ieee80211_txq_schedule_start() this prevents an loop trying to push the queued frames while IEEE80211_TXQ_STOP is set: After setting IEEE80211_TXQ_STOP the driver will call ieee80211_return_txq(). Which calls __ieee80211_schedule_txq(), detects that there sill are frames in the queue and immediately restarts the stopped TXQ. Which can't dequeue any frame and thus starts over the loop. 2025-07-18wifi: mac80211: support returning the S1G short beacon skbLachlan Hodges
When short beaconing is enabled, check the value of the sb_count to determine whether we are to send a long beacon or short beacon. sb_count represents the number of short beacons until the next long beacon, where if its value is 0 we are to send a long beacon. The value is then reset to the long beacon period, which represents the number of beacon intervals between each long beacon. The decrement process follows the same cadence as the decrement of the DTIM count value. 2025-06-24wifi: cfg80211/mac80211: Add support to get radio indexRoopni Devanathan
Currently, per-radio attributes are set on per-phy basis, i.e., all the radios present in a wiphy will take attributes values sent from user. But each radio in a wiphy can get different values from userspace based on its requirement. To extend support to set per-radio attributes, add support to get radio index from userspace. Add an NL attribute - NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RADIO_INDEX, to get user specified radio index for which attributes should be changed. Pass this to individual drivers, so that the drivers can use this radio index to change per-radio attributes when necessary. Currently, per-radio attributes identified are: NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_TX_POWER_LEVEL NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_ANTENNA_TX NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_ANTENNA_RX NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RETRY_SHORT NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RETRY_LONG NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_FRAG_THRESHOLD NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_RTS_THRESHOLD NL80211_ATTR_WIPHY_COVERAGE_CLASS NL80211_ATTR_TXQ_LIMIT NL80211_ATTR_TXQ_MEMORY_LIMIT NL80211_ATTR_TXQ_QUANTUM By default, the radio index is set to -1. This means the attribute should be treated as a global configuration. If the user has not specified any index, then the radio index passed to individual drivers would be -1. This would indicate that the attribute applies to all radios in that wiphy. 2025-06-17wifi: mac80211: don't WARN for late channel/color switchJohannes Berg
There's really no value in the WARN stack trace etc., the reason for this happening isn't directly related to the calling function anyway. Also, syzbot has been observing it constantly, and there's no way we can resolve it there - those systems are just slow. 2025-05-21wifi: check if socket flags are validBert Karwatzki

2025-04-23wifi: mac80211: VLAN traffic in multicast pathMuna Sinada
Currently for MLO, sending out multicast frames on each link is handled by mac80211 only when IEEE80211_HW_MLO_MCAST_MULTI_LINK_TX flag is not set. Dynamic VLAN multicast traffic utilizes software encryption. Due to this, mac80211 should handle transmitting multicast frames on all links for multicast VLAN traffic. 2025-04-23Revert "mac80211: Dynamically set CoDel parameters per station"Toke Høiland-Jørgensen
This reverts commit 484a54c2e597dbc4ace79c1687022282905afba0. The CoDel parameter change essentially disables CoDel on slow stations, with some questionable assumptions, as Dave pointed out in [0]. Quoting from there: But here are my pithy comments as to why this part of mac80211 is so wrong... static void sta_update_codel_params(struct sta_info *sta, u32 thr) { - if (thr && thr < STA_SLOW_THRESHOLD * sta->local->num_sta) { 1) sta->local->num_sta is the number of associated, rather than active, stations. "Active" stations in the last 50ms or so, might have been a better thing to use, but as most people have far more than that associated, we end up with really lousy codel parameters, all the time. Mistake numero uno! 2) The STA_SLOW_THRESHOLD was completely arbitrary in 2016. - sta->cparams.target = MS2TIME(50); This, by itself, was probably not too bad. 30ms might have been better, at the time, when we were battling powersave etc, but 20ms was enough, really, to cover most scenarios, even where we had low rate 2Ghz multicast to cope with. Even then, codel has a hard time finding any sane drop rate at all, with a target this high. - sta->cparams.interval = MS2TIME(300); But this was horrible, a total mistake, that is leading to codel being completely ineffective in almost any scenario on clients or APS. 100ms, even 80ms, here, would be vastly better than this insanity. I'm seeing 5+seconds of delay accumulated in a bunch of otherwise happily fq-ing APs.... 100ms of observed jitter during a flow is enough. Certainly (in 2016) there were interactions with powersave that I did not understand, and still don't, but if you are transmitting in the first place, powersave shouldn't be a problemmmm..... - sta->cparams.ecn = false; At the time we were pretty nervous about ecn, I'm kind of sanguine about it now, and reliably indicating ecn seems better than turning it off for any reason. [...] In production, on p2p wireless, I've had 8ms and 80ms for target and interval for years now, and it works great. I think Dave's arguments above are basically sound on the face of it, and various experimentation with tighter CoDel parameters in the OpenWrt community have show promising results[1]. So I don't think there's any reason to keep this parameter fiddling; hence this revert. Jason mentioned at netdevconf that we've run out of tx_flags in the skb_shinfo(). Gain one bit back by removing the wifi bit. 2025-02-11wifi: mac80211: aggregation: remove deflink accesses for MLOJohannes Berg
If a station has connected with MLO (as indicated by valid_links being non-zero, even if that may have just a single bit set), it necessarily supports EHT/aggregation, so we don't need to check the deflink for those cases. In commit 0d9c2beed116 ("wifi: mac80211: fix monitor channel with chanctx emulation") I changed mac80211 to always have an internal monitor_sdata to have something to have the chanctx bound to. However, if the driver didn't also have the WANT_MONITOR flag this would cause mac80211 to allocate it without telling the driver (which was intentional) but also use it for later APIs to the driver without it ever having known about it which was _not_ intentional. Check through the code and only use the monitor_sdata in the relevant places (TX, MU-MIMO follow settings, TX power, and interface iteration) when the WANT_MONITOR flag is set. If the driver uses the new IEEE80211_CHAN_CAN_MONITOR, we may monitor on channels that are, e.g. via regulatory, otherwise considered disabled. In these cases the sta pointer will also be NULL, but clarify it in the code anyway. This pointer can change here since the SKB can change, so we actually later open-coded IEEE80211_SKB_CB() again. 2024-02-08wifi: mac80211: simplify non-chanctx driversJohannes Berg
There are still surprisingly many non-chanctx drivers, but in mac80211 that code is a bit awkward. Simplify this by having those drivers assign 'emulated' ops, so that the mac80211 code can be more unified between non-chanctx/chanctx drivers. This cuts the number of places caring about it by about 15, which are scattered across - now they're fewer and no longer in the channel context handling. 2024-02-08wifi: mac80211: clean up band switch in durationJohannes Berg
Most devices now do duration calculations, so we don't hit this code at all any more. Clearly the approach of warning at compile time here when new bands are added didn't work, the new bands were just added with "TODO". Clean it up, it won't matter for new bands since they'll just not have any need to calculate durations in software. While at it, also clean up and unify the code a bit. 2023-09-25wifi: mac80211: allow transmitting EAPOL frames with tainted keyWen Gong
Lower layer device driver stop/wake TX by calling ieee80211_stop_queue()/ ieee80211_wake_queue() while hw scan. Sometimes hw scan and PTK rekey are running in parallel, when M4 sent from wpa_supplicant arrive while the TX queue is stopped, then the M4 will pending send, and then new key install from wpa_supplicant. After TX queue wake up by lower layer device driver, the M4 will be dropped by below call stack. When key install started, the current key flag is set KEY_FLAG_TAINTED in ieee80211_pairwise_rekey(), and then mac80211 wait key install complete by lower layer device driver. Meanwhile ieee80211_tx_h_select_key() will return TX_DROP for the M4 in step 12 below, and then ieee80211_free_txskb() called by ieee80211_tx_dequeue(), so the M4 will not send and free, then the rekey process failed becaue AP not receive M4. Please see details in steps below. There are a interval between KEY_FLAG_TAINTED set for current key flag and install key complete by lower layer device driver, the KEY_FLAG_TAINTED is set in this interval, all packet including M4 will be dropped in this interval, the interval is step 8~13 as below. issue steps: TX thread install key thread 1. stop_queue -idle- 2. sending M4 -idle- 3. M4 pending -idle- 4. -idle- starting install key from wpa_supplicant 5. -idle- =>ieee80211_key_replace() 6. -idle- =>ieee80211_pairwise_rekey() and set currently key->flags |= KEY_FLAG_TAINTED 7. -idle- =>ieee80211_key_enable_hw_accel() 8. -idle- =>drv_set_key() and waiting key install complete from lower layer device driver 9. wake_queue -waiting state- 10. re-sending M4 -waiting state- 11. =>ieee80211_tx_h_select_key() -waiting state- 12. drop M4 by KEY_FLAG_TAINTED -waiting state- 13. -idle- install key complete with success/fail success: clear flag KEY_FLAG_TAINTED fail: start disconnect Hence add check in step 11 above to allow the EAPOL send out in the interval. If lower layer device driver use the old key/cipher to encrypt the M4, then AP received/decrypt M4 correctly, after M4 send out, lower layer device driver install the new key/cipher to hardware and return success. If lower layer device driver use new key/cipher to send the M4, then AP will/should drop the M4, then it is same result with this issue, AP will/ should kick out station as well as this issue. issue log: kworker/u16:4-5238 [000] 6456.108926: stop_queue: phy1 queue:0, reason:0 wpa_supplicant-961 [003] 6456.119737: rdev_tx_control_port: wiphy_name=phy1 name=wlan0 ifindex=6 dest=ARRAY[9e, 05, 31, 20, 9b, d0] proto=36488 unencrypted=0 wpa_supplicant-961 [003] 6456.119839: rdev_return_int_cookie: phy1, returned 0, cookie: 504 wpa_supplicant-961 [003] 6456.120287: rdev_add_key: phy1, netdev:wlan0(6), key_index: 0, mode: 0, pairwise: true, mac addr: 9e:05:31:20:9b:d0 wpa_supplicant-961 [003] 6456.120453: drv_set_key: phy1 vif:wlan0(2) sta:9e:05:31:20:9b:d0 cipher:0xfac04, flags=0x9, keyidx=0, hw_key_idx=0 kworker/u16:9-3829 [001] 6456.168240: wake_queue: phy1 queue:0, reason:0 kworker/u16:9-3829 [001] 6456.168255: drv_wake_tx_queue: phy1 vif:wlan0(2) sta:9e:05:31:20:9b:d0 ac:0 tid:7 kworker/u16:9-3829 [001] 6456.168305: cfg80211_control_port_tx_status: wdev(1), cookie: 504, ack: false wpa_supplicant-961 [003] 6459.167982: drv_return_int: phy1 - -110 issue call stack: nl80211_frame_tx_status+0x230/0x340 [cfg80211] cfg80211_control_port_tx_status+0x1c/0x28 [cfg80211] ieee80211_report_used_skb+0x374/0x3e8 [mac80211] ieee80211_free_txskb+0x24/0x40 [mac80211] ieee80211_tx_dequeue+0x644/0x954 [mac80211] ath10k_mac_tx_push_txq+0xac/0x238 [ath10k_core] ath10k_mac_op_wake_tx_queue+0xac/0xe0 [ath10k_core] drv_wake_tx_queue+0x80/0x168 [mac80211] __ieee80211_wake_txqs+0xe8/0x1c8 [mac80211] _ieee80211_wake_txqs+0xb4/0x120 [mac80211] ieee80211_wake_txqs+0x48/0x80 [mac80211] tasklet_action_common+0xa8/0x254 tasklet_action+0x2c/0x38 __do_softirq+0xdc/0x384 Signed-off-by: Wen Gong <quic_wgong@quicinc.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20230801064751.25803-1-quic_wgong@quicinc.com Signed-off-by: Johannes Berg <johannes.berg@intel.com>
2023-09-25wifi: mac80211: support antenna control in injectionJohannes Berg
Support antenna control for injection by parsing the antenna radiotap field (which may be presented multiple times) and telling the driver about the resulting antenna bitmap. Of course there's no guarantee the driver will actually honour this, just like any other injection control. If misconfigured, i.e. the injected HT/VHT MCS needs more chains than antennas are configured, the bitmap is reset to zero, indicating no selection. For now this is only set up for two anntenas so we keep more free bits, but that can be trivially extended if any driver implements support for it that can deal with hardware with more antennas.
