2025-05-31batman-adv: store hard_iface as iflink private dataMatthias Schiffer
By passing the hard_iface to netdev_master_upper_dev_link() as private data, we can iterate over hardifs of a mesh interface more efficiently using netdev_for_each_lower_private*() (instead of iterating over the global hardif list). In addition, this will enable resolving a hardif from its netdev using netdev_lower_dev_get_private() and getting rid of the global list altogether in the following patches. A similar approach can be seen in the bonding driver. 2025-02-22batman-adv: Use consistent name for mesh interfaceSven Eckelmann
The way how the virtual interface is called inside the batman-adv source code is not consistent. The genl headers call it meshif and the rest of the code calls is (mostly) softif. The genl definitions cannot be touched because they are part of the UAPI. But the rest of the batman-adv code can be touched to have a consistent name again. The bulk of the renaming was done using sed -i -e 's/soft\(-\|\_\| \|\)i\([nf]\)/mesh\1i\2/g' \ -e 's/SOFT\(-\|\_\| \|\)I\([NF]\)/MESH\1I\2/g' and then it was adjusted slightly when proofreading the changes. 2025-01-22batman-adv: Drop unmanaged ELP metric workerSven Eckelmann
The ELP worker needs to calculate new metric values for all neighbors "reachable" over an interface. Some of the used metric sources require locks which might need to sleep. This sleep is incompatible with the RCU list iterator used for the recorded neighbors. The initial approach to work around of this problem was to queue another work item per neighbor and then run this in a new context. Even when this solved the RCU vs might_sleep() conflict, it has a major problems: Nothing was stopping the work item in case it is not needed anymore - for example because one of the related interfaces was removed or the batman-adv module was unloaded - resulting in potential invalid memory accesses. Directly canceling the metric worker also has various problems: * cancel_work_sync for a to-be-deactivated interface is called with rtnl_lock held. But the code in the ELP metric worker also tries to use rtnl_lock() - which will never return in this case. This also means that cancel_work_sync would never return because it is waiting for the worker to finish. * iterating over the neighbor list for the to-be-deactivated interface is currently done using the RCU specific methods. Which means that it is possible to miss items when iterating over it without the associated spinlock - a behaviour which is acceptable for a periodic metric check but not for a cleanup routine (which must "stop" all still running workers) The better approch is to get rid of the per interface neighbor metric worker and handle everything in the interface worker. The original problems are solved by: * creating a list of neighbors which require new metric information inside the RCU protected context, gathering the metric according to the new list outside the RCU protected context * only use rcu_trylock inside metric gathering code to avoid a deadlock when the cancel_delayed_work_sync is called in the interface removal code (which is called with the rtnl_lock held) Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Fixes: c833484e5f38 ("batman-adv: ELP - compute the metric based on the estimated throughput") Signed-off-by: Sven Eckelmann <sven@narfation.org> Signed-off-by: Simon Wunderlich <sw@simonwunderlich.de>

2025-01-19batman-adv: fix panic during interface removalAndy Strohman
Reference counting is used to ensure that batadv_hardif_neigh_node and batadv_hard_iface are not freed before/during batadv_v_elp_throughput_metric_update work is finished. But there isn't a guarantee that the hard if will remain associated with a soft interface up until the work is finished. This fixes a crash triggered by reboot that looks like this: Call trace: batadv_v_mesh_free+0xd0/0x4dc [batman_adv] batadv_v_elp_throughput_metric_update+0x1c/0xa4 process_one_work+0x178/0x398 worker_thread+0x2e8/0x4d0 kthread+0xd8/0xdc ret_from_fork+0x10/0x20 (the batadv_v_mesh_free call is misleading, and does not actually happen) I was able to make the issue happen more reliably by changing hardif_neigh->bat_v.metric_work work to be delayed work. If received skb in batadv_v_elp_packet_recv or batadv_v_ogm_packet_recv is either cloned or non linearized then its data buffer will be reallocated by batadv_check_management_packet when skb_cow or skb_linearize get called. 2021-02-06batman-adv: Drop publication years from copyright infoSven Eckelmann
The batman-adv source code was using the year of publication (to net-next) as "last" year for the copyright statement. The whole source code mentioned in the MAINTAINERS "BATMAN ADVANCED" section was handled as a single entity regarding the publishing year. This avoided having outdated (in sense of year information - not copyright holder) publishing information inside several files. But since the simple "update copyright year" commit (without other changes) in the file was not well received in the upstream kernel, the option to not have a copyright year (for initial and last publication) in the files are chosen instead. negotiation off" The commit 8c46fcd78308 ("batman-adv: disable ethtool link speed detection when auto negotiation off") disabled the usage of ethtool's link_ksetting when auto negotation was enabled due to invalid values when used with tun/tap virtual net_devices. According to the patch, automatic measurements should be used for these kind of interfaces. But there are major flaws with this argumentation: * automatic measurements are not implemented * auto negotiation has nothing to do with the validity of the retrieved values The first point has to be fixed by a longer patch series. The "validity" part of the second point must be addressed in the same patch series by dropping the usage of ethtool's link_ksetting (thus always doing automatic measurements over ethernet). 2018-11-12batman-adv: Use explicit tvlv padding for ELP packetsSven Eckelmann
The announcement messages of batman-adv COMPAT_VERSION 15 have the possibility to announce additional information via a dynamic TVLV part. This part is optional for the ELP packets and currently not parsed by the Linux implementation. Still out-of-tree versions are using it to transport things like neighbor hashes to optimize the rebroadcast behavior. Since the ELP broadcast packets are smaller than the minimal ethernet packet, it often has to be padded. This is often done (as specified in RFC894) with octets of zero and thus work perfectly fine with the TVLV part (making it a zero length and thus empty). But not all ethernet compatible hardware seems to follow this advice. To avoid ambiguous situations when parsing the TVLV header, just force the 4 bytes (TVLV length + padding) after the required ELP header to zero. 2018-05-14batman-adv: disable ethtool link speed detection when auto negotiation offMarek Lindner
Virtual interface drivers such as tun / tap interfaces, VLAN, etc tend to initialize the interface throughput with some value for the sake of having a throughput number to export via ethtool. This exported throughput leaves batman-adv to conclude the interface throughput is genuine (reflecting reality), thus no measurements are necessary. Based on the observation that those interface types also tend to set the link auto-negotiation to 'off', batman-adv shall check this setting to differentiate between genuine link throughput information and placeholders installed by virtual interfaces. The "default throughput" setting exported via sysfs still allows to configure the batman-adv throughput for the interface, thus disabling the measurements. 2017-06-16networking: convert many more places to skb_put_zero()Johannes Berg
There were many places that my previous spatch didn't find, as pointed out by yuan linyu in various patches. The following spatch found many more and also removes the now unnecessary casts: @@ identifier p, p2; expression len; expression skb; type t, t2; @@ ( -p = skb_put(skb, len); +p = skb_put_zero(skb, len); | -p = (t)skb_put(skb, len); +p = skb_put_zero(skb, len); ) ... when != p ( p2 = (t2)p; -memset(p2, 0, len); | -memset(p, 0, len); ) @@ type t, t2; identifier p, p2; expression skb; @@ t *p; ... 2017-06-13batman-adv: Accept only filled wifi station infoSven Eckelmann
The wifi driver can decide to not provide parts of the station info. For example, the expected throughput of the station can be omitted when the used rate control doesn't provide this kind of information. The B.A.T.M.A.N. V implementation must therefore check the filled bitfield before it tries to access the expected_throughput of the returned station_info. 2017-06-13batman-adv: Use default throughput value on cfg80211 errorSven Eckelmann
A wifi interface should never be handled like an ethernet devices. The parser of the cfg80211 output must therefore skip the ethtool code when cfg80211_get_station returned an error. 2016-11-08batman-adv: Cache the type of wifi device for each hardifSven Eckelmann
batman-adv is requiring the type of wifi device in different contexts. Some of them can take the rtnl semaphore and some of them already have the semaphore taken. But even others don't allow that the semaphore will be taken. The data has to be retrieved when the hardif is added to batman-adv because some of the wifi information for an hardif will only be available with rtnl lock. It can then be cached in the batadv_hard_iface and the functions is_wifi_netdev and is_cfg80211_netdev can just compare the correct bits without imposing extra locking requirements. 2016-11-08batman-adv: refactor wifi interface detectionMarek Lindner
The ELP protocol requires cfg80211 to auto-detect the WiFi througput to a given neighbor. Use batadv_is_cfg80211_netdev() to determine whether or not an interface is eligible. 2016-07-04batman-adv: split routing API data structure in subobjectsAntonio Quartulli
The routing API data structure contains several function pointers that can easily be grouped together based on the component they work with. Split the API in subobjects in order to improve definition readability. At the same time, remove the "bat_" prefix from the API object and its fields names. These are batman-adv private structs and there is no need to always prepend such prefix, which only makes function invocations much much longer. 2016-02-29batman-adv: ELP - send unicast ELP packets for throughput samplingAntonio Quartulli
In case of an unused wireless link, the mac80211 throughput estimation won't get updated further. Consequently, the reported throughput metric will become obsolete. With this patch unicast sampling is introduced by periodically sending unicast ELP packets to each neighbor on idle WiFi links. These sampling packets will fill an entire frame, so that the measurement is as reliable as possible Signed-off-by: Antonio Quartulli <antonio@open-mesh.com> Signed-off-by: Marek Lindner <mareklindner@neomailbox.ch>
