9 dayssmb/server: add ksmbd_vfs_kern_path()NeilBrown
The function ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked() seems to serve two functions and as a result has an odd interface. On success it returns with the parent directory locked and with write access on that filesystem requested, but it may have crossed over a mount point to return the path, which makes the lock and the write access irrelevant. This patches separates the functionality into two functions: - ksmbd_vfs_kern_path() does not lock the parent, does not request write access, but does cross mount points - ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked() does not cross mount points but does lock the parent and request write access. The parent_path parameter is no longer needed. For the _locked case the final path is sufficient to drop write access and to unlock the parent (using path->dentry->d_parent which is safe while the lock is held). There were 3 caller of ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked(). - smb2_create_link() needs to remove the target if it existed and needs the lock and the write-access, so it continues to use ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked(). It would not make sense to cross mount points in this case. - smb2_open() is the only user that needs to cross mount points and it has no need for the lock or write access, so it now uses ksmbd_vfs_kern_path() - smb2_creat() does not need to cross mountpoints as it is accessing a file that it has just created on *this* filesystem. But also it does not need the lock or write access because by the time ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked() was called it has already created the file. So it could use either interface. It is simplest to use ksmbd_vfs_kern_path(). ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_unlock() is still needed after ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked() but it doesn't require the parent_path any more. After a successful call to ksmbd_vfs_kern_path(), only path_put() is needed to release the path. 13 dayssmb/server: simplify ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked()NeilBrown
ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked() first tries to look up the path with the given case. When this fails, if caseless is set, it loops over the components in the path, opening the relevant directory and searching for a name which matches. This name is copied over the original and the the process repeats. Each time a lookup with the newly updated path is repeated from the top (vfs_path_lookup()). When the last component has been case-corrected the simplest next step is to repeat the original lookup with ksmbd_vfs_path_lookup_locked(). If this works it gives exactly what we want, if it fails it gives the correct failure. This observation allows the code to be simplified, in particular removing the ksmbd_vfs_lock_parent() call. This patch also removes the duplication of name and filepath (two names for the one thing) and calls path_put(parent_path) sooner so parent_path can be passed directly to vfs_path_lookup avoiding the need to store it temporarily in path and then copying into parent_path. This patch removes one user of ksmbd_vfs_lock_parent() which will simplify a future patch. If the call of ksmbd_vfs_lock_parent() fails, we drop the parent_path references and return an error. We need to drop the write access we just got on parent_path->mnt before we drop the mount reference - callers assume that ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked() returns with mount write access grabbed if and only if it has returned 0. 2025-06-17ksmbd: handle set/get info file for streamed fileNamjae Jeon
The bug only appears when: - windows 11 copies a file that has an alternate data stream - streams_xattr is enabled on the share configuration. Microsoft Edge adds a ZoneIdentifier data stream containing the URL for files it downloads. Another way to create a test file: - open cmd.exe - echo "hello from default data stream" > hello.txt - echo "hello again from ads" > hello.txt:ads.txt If you open the file using notepad, we'll see the first message. If you run "notepad hello.txt:ads.txt" in cmd.exe, we should see the second message. dir /s /r should least all streams for the file. The truncation happens because the windows 11 client sends a SetInfo/EndOfFile message on the ADS, but it is instead applied on the main file, because we don't check fp->stream. When receiving set/get info file for a stream file, Change to process requests using stream position and size. Truncate is unnecessary for stream files, so we skip set_file_allocation_info and set_end_of_file_info operations. 2025-06-16VFS: change old_dir and new_dir in struct renamedata to dentrysNeilBrown
all users of 'struct renamedata' have the dentry for the old and new directories, and often have no use for the inode except to store it in the renamedata. This patch changes struct renamedata to hold the dentry, rather than the inode, for the old and new directories, and changes callers to match. The names are also changed from a _dir suffix to _parent. This is consistent with other usage in namei.c and elsewhere. This results in the removal of several local variables and several dereferences of ->d_inode at the cost of adding ->d_inode dereferences to vfs_rename(). I found that rename fails after cifs mount due to update of lookup_one_qstr_excl(). mv a/c b/ mv: cannot move 'a/c' to 'b/c': No such file or directory In order to rename to a new name regardless of whether the dentry is negative, we need to get the dentry through lookup_one_qstr_excl(). So It will not return error if the name doesn't exist. 2025-03-05VFS: Change vfs_mkdir() to return the dentry.NeilBrown
vfs_mkdir() does not guarantee to leave the child dentry hashed or make it positive on success, and in many such cases the filesystem had to use a different dentry which it can now return. This patch changes vfs_mkdir() to return the dentry provided by the filesystems which is hashed and positive when provided. This reduces the number of cases where the resulting dentry is not positive to a handful which don't deserve extra efforts. The only callers of vfs_mkdir() which are interested in the resulting inode are in-kernel filesystem clients: cachefiles, nfsd, smb/server. The only filesystems that don't reliably provide the inode are: - kernfs, tracefs which these clients are unlikely to be interested in - cifs in some configurations would need to do a lookup to find the created inode, but doesn't. cifs cannot be exported via NFS, is unlikely to be used by cachefiles, and smb/server only has a soft requirement for the inode, so this is unlikely to be a problem in practice. - hostfs, nfs, cifs may need to do a lookup (rarely for NFS) and it is possible for a race to make that lookup fail. Actual failure is unlikely and providing callers handle negative dentries graceful they will fail-safe. So this patch removes the lookup code in nfsd and smb/server and adjusts them to fail safe if a negative dentry is provided: - cache-files already fails safe by restarting the task from the top - it still does with this change, though it no longer calls cachefiles_put_directory() as that will crash if the dentry is negative. - nfsd reports "Server-fault" which it what it used to do if the lookup failed. This will never happen on any file-systems that it can actually export, so this is of no consequence. I removed the fh_update() call as that is not needed and out-of-place. A subsequent nfsd_create_setattr() call will call fh_update() when needed. - smb/server only wants the inode to call ksmbd_smb_inherit_owner() which updates ->i_uid (without calling notify_change() or similar) which can be safely skipping on cifs (I hope). If a different dentry is returned, the first one is put. If necessary the fact that it is new can be determined by comparing pointers. A new dentry will certainly have a new pointer (as the old is put after the new is obtained). Similarly if an error is returned (via ERR_PTR()) the original dentry is put. 2025-02-19VFS: add common error checks to lookup_one_qstr_excl()NeilBrown
Callers of lookup_one_qstr_excl() often check if the result is negative or positive. These changes can easily be moved into lookup_one_qstr_excl() by checking the lookup flags: LOOKUP_CREATE means it is NOT an error if the name doesn't exist. LOOKUP_EXCL means it IS an error if the name DOES exist. This patch adds these checks, then removes error checks from callers, and ensures that appropriate flags are passed. This subtly changes the meaning of LOOKUP_EXCL. Previously it could only accompany LOOKUP_CREATE. Now it can accompany LOOKUP_RENAME_TARGET as well. A couple of small changes are needed to accommodate this. The NFS change is functionally a no-op but ensures nfs_is_exclusive_create() does exactly what the name says. Prefer to report ENOMEM rather than incur the oom for allocations in ksmbd. __GFP_NORETRY could not achieve that, It would fail the allocations just too easily. __GFP_RETRY_MAYFAIL will keep retrying the allocation until there is no more progress and fail the allocation instead go OOM and let the caller to deal with it. Holding ->s_vfs_rename_mutex *almost* prevents ->d_parent changes; the case where we really don't want it is splicing the root of disconnected tree to somewhere. In other words, ->s_vfs_rename_mutex is sufficient to stabilize "X is an ancestor of Y" only if X and Y are already in the same tree. Otherwise it can go from false to true, and one can construct a deadlock on that. Make lock_two_directories() report an error in such case and update the callers of lock_rename()/lock_rename_child() to handle such errors. This carries acks from all relevant filesystems. The VFS always uses coarse-grained timestamps when updating the ctime and mtime after a change. This has the benefit of allowing filesystems to optimize away a lot of metadata updates, down to around 1 per jiffy, even when a file is under heavy writes. Unfortunately, this has always been an issue when we're exporting via NFSv3, which relies on timestamps to validate caches. A lot of changes can happen in a jiffy, so timestamps aren't sufficient to help the client decide to invalidate the cache. Even with NFSv4, a lot of exported filesystems don't properly support a change attribute and are subject to the same problems with timestamp granularity. Other applications have similar issues with timestamps (e.g., backup applications). If we were to always use fine-grained timestamps, that would improve the situation, but that becomes rather expensive, as the underlying filesystem would have to log a lot more metadata updates. This introduces fine-grained timestamps that are used when they are actively queried. This uses the 31st bit of the ctime tv_nsec field to indicate that something has queried the inode for the mtime or ctime. When this flag is set, on the next mtime or ctime update, the kernel will fetch a fine-grained timestamp instead of the usual coarse-grained one. As POSIX generally mandates that when the mtime changes, the ctime must also change the kernel always stores normalized ctime values, so only the first 30 bits of the tv_nsec field are ever used. Filesytems can opt into this behavior by setting the FS_MGTIME flag in the fstype. Filesystems that don't set this flag will continue to use coarse-grained timestamps. Various preparatory changes, fixes and cleanups are included: - Fixup all relevant places where POSIX requires updating ctime together with mtime. This is a wide-range of places and all maintainers provided necessary Acks. - Add new accessors for inode->i_ctime directly and change all callers to rely on them. Plain accesses to inode->i_ctime are now gone and it is accordingly rename to inode->__i_ctime and commented as requiring accessors. - Extend generic_fillattr() to pass in a request mask mirroring in a sense the statx() uapi. generic_fillattr just fills in the entire stat struct indiscriminately today, copying data from the inode. There is at least one attribute (STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE) that can have side effects when it is reported, and we're looking at adding more with the addition of multigrain timestamps. Add a request_mask argument to generic_fillattr and have most callers just pass in the value that is passed to getattr. Have other callers (e.g. ksmbd) just pass in STATX_BASIC_STATS. Also move the setting of STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE into generic_fillattr.
