2025-05-12fuse: fix race between concurrent setattrs from multiple nodesGuang Yuan Wu
When mounting a user-space filesystem on multiple clients, after concurrent ->setattr() calls from different node, stale inode attributes may be cached in some node. This is caused by fuse_setattr() racing with fuse_reverse_inval_inode(). When filesystem server receives setattr request, the client node with valid iattr cached will be required to update the fuse_inode's attr_version and invalidate the cache by fuse_reverse_inval_inode(), and at the next call to ->getattr() they will be fetched from user space. The race scenario is: 1. client-1 sends setattr (iattr-1) request to server 2. client-1 receives the reply from server 3. before client-1 updates iattr-1 to the cached attributes by fuse_change_attributes_common(), server receives another setattr (iattr-2) request from client-2 4. server requests client-1 to update the inode attr_version and invalidate the cached iattr, and iattr-1 becomes staled 5. client-2 receives the reply from server, and caches iattr-2 6. continue with step 2, client-1 invokes fuse_change_attributes_common(), and caches iattr-1 The issue has been observed from concurrent of chmod, chown, or truncate, which all invoke ->setattr() call. The solution is to use fuse_inode's attr_version to check whether the attributes have been modified during the setattr request's lifetime. If so, mark the attributes as invalid in the function fuse_change_attributes_common(). 2025-05-05saner calling conventions for ->d_automount()Al Viro
Currently the calling conventions for ->d_automount() instances have an odd wart - returned new mount to be attached is expected to have refcount 2. That kludge is intended to make sure that mark_mounts_for_expiry() called before we get around to attaching that new mount to the tree won't decide to take it out. finish_automount() drops the extra reference after it's done with attaching mount to the tree - or drops the reference twice in case of error. ->d_automount() instances have rather counterintuitive boilerplate in them. There's a much simpler approach: have mark_mounts_for_expiry() skip the mounts that are yet to be mounted. And to hell with grabbing/dropping those extra references. Makes for simpler correctness analysis, at that... 2025-04-15fuse: add more control over cache invalidation behaviourLuis Henriques
Currently userspace is able to notify the kernel to invalidate the cache for an inode. This means that, if all the inodes in a filesystem need to be invalidated, then userspace needs to iterate through all of them and do this kernel notification separately. This patch adds the concept of 'epoch': each fuse connection will have the current epoch initialized and every new dentry will have it's d_time set to the current epoch value. A new operation will then allow userspace to increment the epoch value. Every time a dentry is d_revalidate()'ed, it's epoch is compared with the current connection epoch and invalidated if it's value is different. 2025-03-31fuse: Increase FUSE_NAME_MAX to PATH_MAXBernd Schubert
Our file system has a translation capability for S3-to-posix. The current value of 1kiB is enough to cover S3 keys, but does not allow encoding of %xx escape characters. The limit is increased to (PATH_MAX - 1), as we need 3 x 1024 and that is close to PATH_MAX (4kB) already. -1 is used as the terminating null is not included in the length calculation. Testing large file names was hard with libfuse/example file systems, so I created a new memfs that does not have a 255 file name length limitation. https://github.com/libfuse/libfuse/pull/1077 The connection is initialized with FUSE_NAME_LOW_MAX, which is set to the previous value of FUSE_NAME_MAX of 1024. With FUSE_MIN_READ_BUFFER of 8192 that is enough for two file names + fuse headers. When FUSE_INIT reply sets max_pages to a value > 1 we know that fuse daemon supports request buffers of at least 2 pages (+ header) and can therefore hold 2 x PATH_MAX file names - operations like rename or link that need two file names are no issue then. 2025-03-17fuse: fix dax truncate/punch_hole fault pathAlistair Popple
Patch series "fs/dax: Fix ZONE_DEVICE page reference counts", v9. Device and FS DAX pages have always maintained their own page reference counts without following the normal rules for page reference counting. In particular pages are considered free when the refcount hits one rather than zero and refcounts are not added when mapping the page. Tracking this requires special PTE bits (PTE_DEVMAP) and a secondary mechanism for allowing GUP to hold references on the page (see get_dev_pagemap). However there doesn't seem to be any reason why FS DAX pages need their own reference counting scheme. By treating the refcounts on these pages the same way as normal pages we can remove a lot of special checks. In particular pXd_trans_huge() becomes the same as pXd_leaf(), although I haven't made that change here. It also frees up a valuable SW define PTE bit on architectures that have devmap PTE bits defined. It also almost certainly allows further clean-up of the devmap managed functions, but I have left that as a future improvment. It also enables support for compound ZONE_DEVICE pages which is one of my primary motivators for doing this work. This patch (of 20): FS DAX requires file systems to call into the DAX layout prior to unlinking inodes to ensure there is no ongoing DMA or other remote access to the direct mapped page. The fuse file system implements fuse_dax_break_layouts() to do this which includes a comment indicating that passing dmap_end == 0 leads to unmapping of the whole file. However this is not true - passing dmap_end == 0 will not unmap anything before dmap_start, and further more dax_layout_busy_page_range() will not scan any of the range to see if there maybe ongoing DMA access to the range. Fix this by passing -1 for dmap_end to fuse_dax_break_layouts() which will invalidate the entire file range to dax_layout_busy_page_range(). 2025-03-05fuse: return correct dentry for ->mkdirNeilBrown
fuse already uses d_splice_alias() to ensure an appropriate dentry is found for a newly created dentry. Now that ->mkdir can return that dentry we do so. This requires changing create_new_entry() to return a dentry and handling that change in all callers. Note that when create_new_entry() is asked to create anything other than a directory we can be sure it will NOT return an alternate dentry as d_splice_alias() only returns an alternate dentry for directories. So we don't need to check for that case when passing one the result. 2025-02-27Change inode_operations.mkdir to return struct dentry *NeilBrown
Some filesystems, such as NFS, cifs, ceph, and fuse, do not have complete control of sequencing on the actual filesystem (e.g. on a different server) and may find that the inode created for a mkdir request already exists in the icache and dcache by the time the mkdir request returns. For example, if the filesystem is mounted twice the directory could be visible on the other mount before it is on the original mount, and a pair of name_to_handle_at(), open_by_handle_at() calls could instantiate the directory inode with an IS_ROOT() dentry before the first mkdir returns. This means that the dentry passed to ->mkdir() may not be the one that is associated with the inode after the ->mkdir() completes. Some callers need to interact with the inode after the ->mkdir completes and they currently need to perform a lookup in the (rare) case that the dentry is no longer hashed. This lookup-after-mkdir requires that the directory remains locked to avoid races. Planned future patches to lock the dentry rather than the directory will mean that this lookup cannot be performed atomically with the mkdir. To remove this barrier, this patch changes ->mkdir to return the resulting dentry if it is different from the one passed in. Possible returns are: NULL - the directory was created and no other dentry was used ERR_PTR() - an error occurred non-NULL - this other dentry was spliced in This patch only changes file-systems to return "ERR_PTR(err)" instead of "err" or equivalent transformations. Subsequent patches will make further changes to some file-systems to return a correct dentry. Not all filesystems reliably result in a positive hashed dentry: - NFS, cifs, hostfs will sometimes need to perform a lookup of the name to get inode information. Races could result in this returning something different. Note that this lookup is non-atomic which is what we are trying to avoid. Placing the lookup in filesystem code means it only happens when the filesystem has no other option. - kernfs and tracefs leave the dentry negative and the ->revalidate operation ensures that lookup will be called to correctly populate the dentry. This could be fixed but I don't think it is important to any of the users of vfs_mkdir() which look at the dentry. The recommendation to use d_drop();d_splice_alias() is ugly but fits with current practice. A planned future patch will change this. 2025-02-20fuse: don't truncate cached, mutated symlinkMiklos Szeredi
Fuse allows the value of a symlink to change and this property is exploited by some filesystems (e.g. CVMFS). It has been observed, that sometimes after changing the symlink contents, the value is truncated to the old size. This is caused by fuse_getattr() racing with fuse_reverse_inval_inode(). fuse_reverse_inval_inode() updates the fuse_inode's attr_version, which results in fuse_change_attributes() exiting before updating the cached attributes This is okay, as the cached attributes remain invalid and the next call to fuse_change_attributes() will likely update the inode with the correct values. The reason this causes problems is that cached symlinks will be returned through page_get_link(), which truncates the symlink to inode->i_size. This is correct for filesystems that don't mutate symlinks, but in this case it causes bad behavior. The solution is to just remove this truncation. This can cause a regression in a filesystem that relies on supplying a symlink larger than the file size, but this is unlikely. If that happens we'd need to make this behavior conditional. 2025-01-27Pass parent directory inode and expected name to ->d_revalidate()Al Viro
->d_revalidate() often needs to access dentry parent and name; that has to be done carefully, since the locking environment varies from caller to caller. We are not guaranteed that dentry in question will not be moved right under us - not unless the filesystem is such that nothing on it ever gets renamed. It can be dealt with, but that results in boilerplate code that isn't even needed - the callers normally have just found the dentry via dcache lookup and want to verify that it's in the right place; they already have the values of ->d_parent and ->d_name stable. There is a couple of exceptions (overlayfs and, to less extent, ecryptfs), but for the majority of calls that song and dance is not needed at all. It's easier to make ecryptfs and overlayfs find and pass those values if there's a ->d_revalidate() instance to be called, rather than doing that in the instances. This commit only changes the calling conventions; making use of supplied values is left to followups. NOTE: some instances need more than just the parent - things like CIFS may need to build an entire path from filesystem root, so they need more precautions than the usual boilerplate. This series doesn't do anything to that need - these filesystems have to keep their locking mechanisms (rename_lock loops, use of dentry_path_raw(), private rwsem a-la v9fs). One thing to keep in mind when using name is that name->name will normally point into the pathname being resolved; the filename in question occupies name->len bytes starting at name->name, and there is NUL somewhere after it, but it the next byte might very well be '/' rather than '\0'. 2025-01-24fuse: make args->in_args[0] to be always the headerBernd Schubert
This change sets up FUSE operations to always have headers in args.in_args[0], even for opcodes without an actual header. This step prepares for a clean separation of payload from headers, initially it is used by fuse-over-io-uring. For opcodes without a header, we use a zero-sized struct as a placeholder. This approach: - Keeps things consistent across all FUSE operations - Will help with payload alignment later - Avoids future issues when header sizes change Op codes that already have an op code specific header do not need modification. Op codes that have neither payload nor op code headers are not modified either (FUSE_READLINK and FUSE_DESTROY). FUSE_BATCH_FORGET already has the header in the right place, but is not using fuse_copy_args - as -over-uring is currently not handling forgets it does not matter for now, but header separation will later need special attention for that op code. Correct the struct fuse_args->in_args array max size. Function fuse_direntplus_link() might call fuse_iget() to initialize a new fuse_inode and change its attributes. If fi->attr_version is always initialized with 0, even if the attributes returned by the FUSE_READDIR request is staled, as the new fi->attr_version is 0, fuse_change_attributes will still set the staled attributes to inode. This wrong behaviour may cause file size inconsistency even when there is no changes from server-side. To reproduce the issue, consider the following 2 programs (A and B) are running concurrently, A B ---------------------------------- -------------------------------- { /fusemnt/dir/f is a file path in a fuse mount, the size of f is 0. } readdir(/fusemnt/dir) start //Daemon set size 0 to f direntry fallocate(f, 1024) stat(f) // B see size 1024 echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches readdir(/fusemnt/dir) reply to kernel Kernel set 0 to the I_NEW inode stat(f) // B see size 0 In the above case, only program B is modifying the file size, however, B observes file size changing between the 2 'readonly' stat() calls. To fix this issue, we should make sure readdirplus still follows the rule of attr_version staleness checking even if the fi->attr_version is lost due to inode eviction. To identify this situation, the new fc->evict_ctr is used to record whether the eviction of inodes occurs during the readdirplus request processing. If it does, the result of readdirplus may be inaccurate; otherwise, the result of readdirplus can be trusted. Although this may still lead to incorrect invalidation, considering the relatively low frequency of evict occurrences, it should be acceptable. We have to: - pass an idmapping to the generic_fillattr() to properly handle UIG/GID mapping for the userspace. - pass -/- to fuse_fillattr() (analog of generic_fillattr() in fuse). Difference between these two is that generic_fillattr() takes all the stat() data from the inode directly, while fuse_fillattr() codepath takes a fresh data just from the userspace reply on the FUSE_GETATTR request. In some cases we can just pass &nop_mnt_idmap, because idmapping won't be used in these codepaths. For example, when 3rd argument of fuse_do_getattr() is NULL then idmap argument is not used. FUSE attempts to detect server support for statx by trying it once and setting no_statx=1 if it fails with ENOSYS, but consider the following scenario: - Userspace (e.g. sh) calls stat() on a file * succeeds - Userspace (e.g. lsd) calls statx(BTIME) on the same file - request_mask = STATX_BASIC_STATS | STATX_BTIME - first pass: sync=true due to differing cache_mask - statx fails and returns ENOSYS - set no_statx and retry - retry sets mask = STATX_BASIC_STATS - now mask == cache_mask; sync=false (time_before: still valid) - so we take the "else if (stat)" path - "err" is still ENOSYS from the failed statx call Fix this by zeroing "err" before retrying the failed call. 2024-03-05fuse: fix root lookup with nonzero generationMiklos Szeredi
The root inode has a fixed nodeid and generation (1, 0). Prior to the commit 15db16837a35 ("fuse: fix illegal access to inode with reused nodeid") generation number on lookup was ignored. After this commit lookup with the wrong generation number resulted in the inode being unhashed. This is correct for non-root inodes, but replacing the root inode is wrong and results in weird behavior. Fix by reverting to the old behavior if ignoring the generation for the root inode, but issuing a warning in dmesg. 2024-03-05fuse: prepare for opening file in passthrough modeAmir Goldstein
In preparation for opening file in passthrough mode, store the fuse_open_out argument in ff->args to be passed into fuse_file_io_open() with the optional backing_id member. This will be used for setting up passthrough to backing file on open reply with FOPEN_PASSTHROUGH flag and a valid backing_id. Opening a file in passthrough mode may fail for several reasons, such as missing capability, conflicting open flags or inode in caching mode. Return EIO from fuse_file_io_open() in those cases. The combination of FOPEN_PASSTHROUGH and FOPEN_DIRECT_IO is allowed - it mean that read/write operations will go directly to the server, but mmap will be done to the backing file. In preparation for inode io modes, a server open response could fail due to conflicting inode io modes. Allow returning an error from fuse_finish_open() and handle the error in the callers. fuse_finish_open() is used as the callback of finish_open(), so that FMODE_OPENED will not be set if fuse_finish_open() fails.
