2024-10-17usb: gadget: uvc: set nbuffers to minimum STREAMING_MIN_BUFFERS in ↵Michael Grzeschik
uvc_queue_setup We set the minimum amount of v4l2 buffers that is possibly be pending to UVCG_STREAMING_MIN_BUFFERS which is two. This way the driver will always have at least one frame pending to be encoded while the other is being enqueued in the hardware. 2024-10-17usb: gadget: uvc: set req_length based on payload by nreqs instead of req_sizeMichael Grzeschik
Compressed formats generate content depending amount of data that is set in the vb2 buffer by the payload_size. When streaming those formats it is better to scatter that smaller data over all requests. This patch is doing that by introducing the calculated req_payload_size which is updated by each frame. It the uses this amount of data to fill the isoc requests instead of the video->req_size. For uncompressed formats it will not make a difference since the payload size will be equal to the imagesize. Therefore the code will have no effecta as req_payload_size will be equal to req_size. 2024-10-17usb: gadget: uvc: add g_parm and s_parm for frame intervalMichael Grzeschik

2024-10-17usb: gadget: uvc: rework to enqueue in pump worker from encoded queueMichael Grzeschik
We install an kthread with pfifo priority that is iterating over all prepared requests and keeps the isoc queue busy. This way it will be scheduled with the same priority as the interrupt handler. As the kthread is triggered with video_enable it will immediately queue some zero length requests into the hw if there is no buffer data available. It also watches the level of needed zero length requests in the hardware not to fall under the UVCG_REQ_MAX_ZERO_COUNT threshold. This way we can drop the function uvc_video_ep_queue_initial_requests entirely. By using the kthread to do the actual request handling the interrupt handler will not be running into the time consuming and eventually locking work of actually enqueueing the requests back into its own pipeline. This work can now even be scheduled on another cpu. 2024-10-17usb: gadget: uvc: only enqueue zero length requests in potential underrunMichael Grzeschik
The complete handler will at least be called after 16 requests have completed, but will still handle all finisher requests. Since we have to maintain a costant filling in the isoc queue we ensure this by adding zero length requests. By counting the amount enqueued requests we can ensure that the queue is never underrun and only need to get active if the queue is running critical. This patch is setting 32 as the critical level, which is twice the request amount that is needed to create interrupts. To properly solve the amount of zero length requests that needs to be held in the hardware after one interrupt needs to be measured and depends on the runtime of the first enqueue run after the interrupt triggered. For now we just use twice the amount of requests between an interrupt. 2023-11-23usb:gadget:uvc Do not use worker thread to pump isoc usb requestsJayant Chowdhary
When we use an async work queue to perform the function of pumping usb requests to the usb controller, it is possible that amongst other factors, thread scheduling affects at what cadence we're able to pump requests. This could mean isoc usb requests miss their uframes - resulting in video stream flickers on the host device. To avoid this, we make the async_wq thread only produce isoc usb_requests with uvc buffers encoded into them. The process of queueing to the endpoint is done by the uvc_video_complete() handler. In case no usb_requests are ready with encoded information, we just queue a zero length request to the endpoint from the complete handler. For bulk endpoints the async_wq thread still queues usb requests to the endpoint. 2023-11-23usb: gadget: uvc: Fix use-after-free for inflight usb_requestsAvichal Rakesh
Currently, the uvc gadget driver allocates all uvc_requests as one array and deallocates them all when the video stream stops. This includes de-allocating all the usb_requests associated with those uvc_requests. This can lead to use-after-free issues if any of those de-allocated usb_requests were still owned by the usb controller. This is patch 2 of 2 in fixing the use-after-free issue. It adds a new flag to uvc_video to track when frames and requests should be flowing. When disabling the video stream, the flag is tripped and, instead of de-allocating all uvc_requests and usb_requests, the gadget driver only de-allocates those usb_requests that are currently owned by it (as present in req_free). Other usb_requests are left untouched until their completion handler is called which takes care of freeing the usb_request and its corresponding uvc_request. Now that uvc_video does not depends on uvc->state, this patch removes unnecessary upates to uvc->state that were made to accommodate uvc_video logic. This should ensure that uvc gadget driver never accidentally de-allocates a usb_request that it doesn't own. 2023-11-23usb: gadget: uvc: Allocate uvc_requests one at a timeAvichal Rakesh
This patch is 1 of 2 patches addressing the use-after-free issue. Instead of bulk allocating all uvc_requests as an array, this patch allocates uvc_requests one at a time, which should allows for similar granularity when deallocating the uvc_requests. This patch has no functional changes other than allocating each uvc_request separately, and similarly freeing each of them separately. 2023-11-23usb: gadget: uvc: prevent use of disabled endpointAvichal Rakesh
Currently the set_alt callback immediately disables the endpoint and queues the v4l2 streamoff event. However, as the streamoff event is processed asynchronously, it is possible that the video_pump thread attempts to queue requests to an already disabled endpoint. This change moves disabling usb endpoint to the end of streamoff event callback. As the endpoint's state can no longer be used, video_pump is now guarded by uvc->state as well. To be consistent with the actual streaming state, uvc->state is now toggled between CONNECTED and STREAMING from the v4l2 event callback only. 2023-02-02usb: gadget: uvc: Disable interrupt endpoint by defaultDaniel Scally
The f_uvc code includes an interrupt endpoint against the VideoControl interface. According to section 2.4.2 of the UVC specification however this endpoint is optional in at least some cases: "This endpoint is optional, but may be mandatory under certain conditions" The conditions enumerated are whether... 1. The device supports hardware triggers 2. The device implements any AutoUpdate controls 3. The device implements any Asynchronous controls As all of those things are implementation dependent, this endpoint might be unnecessary for some users. Further to that it is unusable in the current implementation as there is no mechanism within the UVC gadget driver that allows data to be sent over that endpoint. Disable the interrupt endpoint by default, but check whether the user has asked for it to be enabled in configfs and continue to generate it if so. 2023-02-02usb: gadget: uvc: Rename uvc_control_epDaniel Scally
The f_uvc code defines an endpoint named "uvc_control_ep" but it is configured with a non-zero endpoint address and has its bmAttributes flagged as USB_ENDPOINT_XFER_INT - this cannot be the VideoControl interface's control endpoint, as the default endpoint 0 is used for that purpose. This is instead the optional interrupt endpoint that can be contained by a VideoControl interface. There is also a Class-specific VC Interrupt Endpoint Descriptor and a SuperSpeed companion descriptor that are also for the VC interface's interrupt endpoint but are named as though they are for the control endpoint. Several types of kernel panics can occur due to timing during the uvc gadget removal. This appears to be a problem with gadget resources being managed by both the client application's v4l2 open/close and the UDC gadget bind/unbind. Since the concept of USB_GADGET_DELAYED_STATUS doesn't exist for unbind, add a wait to allow for the application to close out. Move activation of UVC function to subscription on UVC_EVENT_SETUP because there we can guarantee for a userspace application utilizing UVC. This way the completion handler of each usb request and every direct caller of the pump has only to schedule the worker instead of doing the request handling by itself. Moving the request handling to one thread solves the locking problems between the three queueing cases in the completion handler, v4l2_qbuf and video_enable. Many drivers handle the completion handlers directly in their interrupt handlers. This patch also reduces the workload on each interrupt. This patch corrects the SPDX License Identifier style in header files related to USB peripheral controller drivers. For C header files Documentation/process/license-rules.rst mandates C-like comments (opposed to C source files where C++ style should be used). 2018-07-26usb: gadget: uvc: Move userspace API definition to public headerLaurent Pinchart
The UVC gadget userspace API (V4L2 events and custom ioctls) is defined in a header internal to the kernel. Move it to a new public header to make it accessible to userspace. The UVC_INTF_CONTROL and UVC_INTF_STREAMING macros are not used, so remove them in the process. 2017-11-07USB: gadget: function: Remove redundant license textGreg Kroah-Hartman
Now that the SPDX tag is in all USB files, that identifies the license in a specific and legally-defined manner. So the extra GPL text wording can be removed as it is no longer needed at all. This is done on a quest to remove the 700+ different ways that files in the kernel describe the GPL license text. And there's unneeded stuff like the address (sometimes incorrect) for the FSF which is never needed. No copyright headers or other non-license-description text was removed. 2017-11-04USB: add SPDX identifiers to all remaining files in drivers/usb/Greg Kroah-Hartman
It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to audit the kernel tree for correct licenses. Update the drivers/usb/ and include/linux/usb* files with the correct SPDX license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. 2015-03-02[media] uvc gadget: switch to v4l2 core lockingHans Verkuil
Switch this driver over to the V4L2 core locking mechanism in preparation for switching to unlocked_ioctl. Suggested by Laurent Pinchart. This patch introduces a new mutex at the struct uvc_video level and drops the old mutex at the queue level. The new lock is now used for all ioctl locking and in the release file operation (the driver always has to take care of locking in file operations, the core only serializes ioctls). Note that the mmap and get_unmapped_area file operations no longer take a lock. Commit f035eb4e976ef5a059e30bc91cfd310ff030a7d3 fixed a AB-BA deadlock by moving all the locking down into vb2, so the mmap and get_unmapped_area file operations should no longer do any locking before calling into vb2.
