2025-07-07USB: gadget: f_hid: Fix memory leak in hidg_bind error pathYuhao Jiang
In hidg_bind(), if alloc_workqueue() fails after usb_assign_descriptors() has successfully allocated the USB descriptors, the current error handling does not call usb_free_all_descriptors() to free the allocated descriptors, resulting in a memory leak. Restructure the error handling by adding proper cleanup labels: - fail_free_all: cleans up workqueue and descriptors - fail_free_descs: cleans up descriptors only - fail: original cleanup for earlier failures This ensures that allocated resources are properly freed in reverse order of their allocation, preventing the memory leak when alloc_workqueue() fails. I think this takes the record for the most number of patch series (30+) over the longest period of time (2+ years) to get merged properly. Many props go to Wesley Cheng for seeing this effort through, they took a major out-of-tree hacked-up-monstrosity that was created by multiple vendors for their specific devices, got it all merged into a semi-coherent set of changes, and got all of the different major subsystems to agree on how this should be implemented both with changes to their code as well as userspace apis, AND wrangled the hardware companies into agreeing to go forward with this, despite making them all redo work they had already done in their private device trees. This feature offers major power savings on embedded devices where a USB audio stream can continue to flow while the rest of the system is sleeping, something that devices running on battery power really care about. 2025-05-01usb: gadget: hid: allow dynamic interval configuration via configfsBen Hoff
This patch enhances the HID gadget driver to support dynamic configuration of the interrupt polling interval (bInterval) via configfs. A new ‘interval’ attribute is exposed under each HID function’s configfs directory, and any write to it will adjust the poll rate for all endpoints without requiring a rebuild. When the attribute has never been written, legacy defaults are preserved: • Full-Speed (FS) endpoints (IN & OUT) poll every 10 ms • High-Speed (HS) endpoints (IN & OUT) poll every 4 micro-frames (~1 ms) To implement this cleanly: • Add two new fields to f_hid_opts and f_hidg: – unsigned char interval – bool interval_user_set • Introduce dedicated f_hid_opts_interval_show/store functions. Update struct hid_descriptor to better reflect the mandatory and optional parts of the HID Descriptor as per USB HID 1.11 specification. Note: the kernel currently does not parse any optional HID class descriptors, only the mandatory report descriptor. Update all references to member element desc[0] to rpt_desc. Add test to verify bLength and bNumDescriptors values are valid. Replace the for loop with direct access to the mandatory HID class descriptor member for the report descriptor. This eliminates the possibility of getting an out-of-bounds fault. Add a warning message if the HID descriptor contains any unsupported optional HID class descriptors. 2024-08-22USB: gadget: f_hid: Add GET_REPORT via userspace IOCTLChris Wulff
While supporting GET_REPORT is a mandatory request per the HID specification the current implementation of the GET_REPORT request responds to the USB Host with an empty reply of the request length. However, some USB Hosts will request the contents of feature reports via the GET_REPORT request. In addition, some proprietary HID 'protocols' will expect different data, for the same report ID, to be to become available in the feature report by sending a preceding SET_REPORT to the USB Device that defines what data is to be presented when that feature report is subsequently retrieved via GET_REPORT (with a very fast < 5ms turn around between the SET_REPORT and the GET_REPORT). There are two other patch sets already submitted for adding GET_REPORT support. The first [1] allows for pre-priming a list of reports via IOCTLs which then allows the USB Host to perform the request, with no further userspace interaction possible during the GET_REPORT request. And another [2] which allows for a single report to be setup by userspace via IOCTL, which will be fetched and returned by the kernel for subsequent GET_REPORT requests by the USB Host, also with no further userspace interaction possible. This patch, while loosely based on both the patch sets, differs by allowing the option for userspace to respond to each GET_REPORT request by setting up a poll to notify userspace that a new GET_REPORT request has arrived. To support this, two extra IOCTLs are supplied. The first of which is used to retrieve the report ID of the GET_REPORT request (in the case of having non-zero report IDs in the HID descriptor). The second IOCTL allows for storing report responses in a list for responding to requests. The report responses are stored in a list (it will be either added if it does not exist or updated if it exists already). A flag (userspace_req) can be set to whether subsequent requests notify userspace or not. Basic operation when a GET_REPORT request arrives from USB Host: - If the report ID exists in the list and it is set for immediate return (i.e. userspace_req == false) then response is sent immediately, userspace is not notified - The report ID does not exist, or exists but is set to notify userspace (i.e. userspace_req == true) then notify userspace via poll: - If userspace responds, and either adds or update the response in the list and respond to the host with the contents - If userspace does not respond within the fixed timeout (2500ms) but the report has been set prevously, then send 'old' report contents - If userspace does not respond within the fixed timeout (2500ms) and the report does not exist in the list then send an empty report Note that userspace could 'prime' the report list at any other time. While this patch allows for flexibility in how the system responds to requests, and therefore the HID 'protocols' that could be supported, a drawback is the time it takes to service the requests and therefore the maximum throughput that would be achievable. The USB HID Specification v1.11 itself states that GET_REPORT is not intended for periodic data polling, so this limitation is not severe. Testing on an iMX8M Nano Ultra Lite with a heavy multi-core CPU loading showed that userspace can typically respond to the GET_REPORT request within 1200ms - which is well within the 5000ms most operating systems seem to allow, and within the 2500ms set by this patch. The commit 89ff3dfac604 ("usb: gadget: f_hid: fix f_hidg lifetime vs cdev") has introduced a bug that leads to hid device corruption after the replug operation. Reverse device managed memory allocation for the report descriptor to fix the issue. Tested: This change was tested on the AMD EthanolX CRB server with the BMC based on the OpenBMC distribution. The BMC provides KVM functionality via the USB gadget device: - before: KVM page refresh results in a broken USB device, - after: KVM page refresh works without any issues. The embedded struct cdev does not have its lifetime correctly tied to the enclosing struct f_hidg, so there is a use-after-free if /dev/hidgN is held open while the gadget is deleted. This can readily be replicated with libusbgx's example programs (for conciseness - operating directly via configfs is equivalent): gadget-hid exec 3<> /dev/hidg0 gadget-vid-pid-remove exec 3<&- Pull the existing device up in to struct f_hidg and make use of the cdev_device_{add,del}() helpers. This changes the lifetime of the device object to match struct f_hidg, but note that it is still added and deleted at the same time. 2021-08-24usb: gadget: f_hid: optional SETUP/SET_REPORT modeMaxim Devaev
f_hid provides the OUT Endpoint as only way for receiving reports from the host. SETUP/SET_REPORT method is not supported, and this causes a number of compatibility problems with various host drivers, especially in the case of keyboard emulation using f_hid. - Some hosts do not support the OUT Endpoint and ignore it, so it becomes impossible for the gadget to receive a report from the host. In the case of a keyboard, the gadget loses the ability to receive the status of the LEDs. - Some BIOSes/UEFIs can't work with HID devices with the OUT Endpoint at all. This may be due to their bugs or incomplete implementation of the HID standard. For example, absolutely all Apple UEFIs can't handle the OUT Endpoint if it goes after IN Endpoint in the descriptor and require the reverse order (OUT, IN) which is a violation of the standard. Other hosts either do not initialize gadgets with a descriptor containing the OUT Endpoint completely (like some HP and DELL BIOSes and embedded firmwares like on KVM switches), or initialize them, but will not poll the IN Endpoint. This patch adds configfs option no_out_endpoint=1 to disable the OUT Endpoint and allows f_hid to receive reports from the host via SETUP/SET_REPORT. Previously, there was such a feature in f_hid, but it was replaced by the OUT Endpoint [1] in the commit 99c515005857 ("usb: gadget: hidg: register OUT INT endpoint for SET_REPORT"). So this patch actually returns the removed functionality while making it optional. For backward compatibility reasons, the OUT Endpoint mode remains the default behaviour. - The OUT Endpoint mode provides the report queue and reduces USB overhead (eliminating SETUP routine) on transmitting a report from the host. - If the SETUP/SET_REPORT mode is used, there is no report queue, so the userspace will only read last report. For classic HID devices like keyboards this is not a problem, since it's intended to transmit the status of the LEDs and only the last report is important. This mode provides better compatibility with strange and buggy host drivers. Both modes passed USBCV tests. Checking with the USB protocol analyzer also confirmed that everything is working as it should and the new mode ensures operability in all of the described cases. The USB HID standard declares mandatory support for GET_IDLE and SET_IDLE requests for Boot Keyboard. Most hosts can handle their absence, but others like some old/strange UEFIs and BIOSes consider this a critical error and refuse to work with f_hid. This primitive implementation of saving and returning idle is sufficient to meet the requirements of the standard and these devices. 2021-07-27usb: gadget: f_hid: fixed NULL pointer dereferencePhil Elwell
Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable can lead to crashes and a variety of kernel log spam. The problem was found and reproduced on the Raspberry Pi [1] and the original fix was created in Raspberry's own fork [2]. 2019-01-03Remove 'type' argument from access_ok() functionLinus Torvalds
Nobody has actually used the type (VERIFY_READ vs VERIFY_WRITE) argument of the user address range verification function since we got rid of the old racy i386-only code to walk page tables by hand. It existed because the original 80386 would not honor the write protect bit when in kernel mode, so you had to do COW by hand before doing any user access. But we haven't supported that in a long time, and these days the 'type' argument is a purely historical artifact. A discussion about extending 'user_access_begin()' to do the range checking resulted this patch, because there is no way we're going to move the old VERIFY_xyz interface to that model. And it's best done at the end of the merge window when I've done most of my merges, so let's just get this done once and for all. This patch was mostly done with a sed-script, with manual fix-ups for the cases that weren't of the trivial 'access_ok(VERIFY_xyz' form. There were a couple of notable cases: - csky still had the old "verify_area()" name as an alias. - the iter_iov code had magical hardcoded knowledge of the actual values of VERIFY_{READ,WRITE} (not that they mattered, since nothing really used it) - microblaze used the type argument for a debug printout but other than those oddities this should be a total no-op patch. I tried to fix up all architectures, did fairly extensive grepping for access_ok() uses, and the changes are trivial, but I may have missed something. Now that the SPDX tag is in all USB files, that identifies the license in a specific and legally-defined manner. So the extra GPL text wording can be removed as it is no longer needed at all. Since ep->driver_data is not used for endpoint claiming, neither for enabled/disabled state storing, we can reduce number of places where we read or modify it's value, as now it has no particular meaning for function or framework logic. In case of f_hid we only need to store in ep->driver_data pointer to struct f_hidg, as it's used in f_hidg_req_complete() callback.
