dasd_add_busid() can return an error via ERR_PTR() if an allocation fails. However, two callsites in dasd_copy_pair_store() do not check the result, potentially resulting in a NULL pointer dereference. 2024-02-08s390/dasd: Remove PRINTK_HEADER and KMSG_COMPONENT definitionsJan Höppner
PRINTK_HEADER was mainly used to prefix log messages with the module name. Most components don't use this definition anymore. Either because there are no log messages being generated anymore, or pr_*() were replaced by dev_*(), which contains device and component information already. PRINTK_HEADER is also dropped in the function dasd_3990_erp_handle_match_erp() in dasd_3990_erp.c from a panic() call as panic() already provides all relevant information. KMSG_COMPONENT was mainly used to identify a component in a long gone kernel message catalog feature. Remove both definition since they're either not used or alternatives make the code slightly shorter and more readable. There are two variants of the device uid string. One containing the virtual device unit information table (vduit) identifying the device as a virtual device located on a real device in a z/VM environment. The other variant does not contain those additional information. Simplify the string generation with a shorter check of an existing vduit embedded in the snprintf() calls. 2023-04-11s390/dasd: add aq_timeouts autoquiesce triggerStefan Haberland
Add a sysfs attribute aq_timeouts that controls after how many timeouts a autoquiesce event might be triggered. The default value is 32768 which is the maximum number of retries for the DASD device driver DASD_RETRIES_MAX. This means that the timeout trigger will never happen. The default value for DASD retries is 255. Setting the value to below 255 will trigger the timeout autoquiesce event before an IO error is generated. Also add the check for the configured amount of timeouts and trigger an autoquiesce event if exceeded. Add sysfs attribute that controls the DASD autoquiesce feature. The autoquiesce is disabled when 0 is echoed to the attribute. A value greater than 0 will enable the feature. The aq_mask attribute will accept an unsigned integer and the value will be interpreted as bitmask defining the trigger events that will lead to an automatic quiesce. The following autoquiesce triggers will currently be available: DASD_EER_FATALERROR 1 - any final I/O error DASD_EER_NOPATH 2 - no remaining paths for the device DASD_EER_STATECHANGE 3 - a state change interrupt occurred DASD_EER_PPRCSUSPEND 4 - the device is PPRC suspended DASD_EER_NOSPC 5 - there is no space remaining on an ESE device DASD_EER_TIMEOUT 6 - a certain amount of timeouts occurred DASD_EER_STARTIO 7 - the IO start function encountered an error The currently supported maximum value is 255. Bit 31 is reserved for internal usage. Bit 0 is not used. Add a function to check if a device is accessible. This makes mostly sense for copy pair secondary devices but it will work for all devices. The sysfs attribute ping is a write only attribute and will issue a NOP CCW to the device. In case of success it will return zero. If the device is not accessible it will return an error code. 2022-09-21s390/dasd: add copy pair swap capabilityStefan Haberland
In case of errors or misbehaviour of the primary device a controlled failover to one of the configured secondary devices needs to be performed. The swap processing stops I/O on the primary device, all requests are re-queued to the blocklayer queue, the entries in the copy relation are swapped and finally the link to the blockdevice is moved from primary to secondary dasd device. After this, the secondary becomes the new primary device and I/O is restarted on that device. 2022-09-21s390/dasd: add copy pair setupStefan Haberland
A copy relation that is configured on the storage server side needs to be enabled separately in the device driver. A sysfs interface is created that allows userspace tooling to control such setup. The following sysfs entries are added to store and read copy relation information: copy_pair - Add/Delete a copy pair relation to the DASD device driver - Query all previously added copy pair relations copy_role - Query the copy pair role of the device To add a copy pair to the DASD device driver it has to be specified through the sysfs attribute copy_pair. Only one secondary device can be specified at a time together with the primary device. Both, secondary and primary can be used equally to define the copy pair. The secondary devices have to be offline when adding the copy relation. The primary device needs to be specified first followed by the comma separated secondary device. Read from the copy_pair attribute to get the current setup and write "clear" to the attribute to delete any existing setup. Example: $ echo 0.0.9700,0.0.9740 > /sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.9700/copy_pair $ cat /sys/bus/ccw/devices/0.0.9700/copy_pair 0.0.9700,0.0.9740 During device online processing the required data will be read from the storage server and the information will be compared to the setup requested through the copy_pair attribute. The registration of the primary and secondary device will be handled accordingly. A blockdevice is only allocated for copy relation primary devices. To query the copy role of a device read from the copy_role sysfs attribute. Possible values are primary, secondary, and none. 2021-01-25s390/dasd: Fix inconsistent kobject removalJan Höppner
Our intention was to only remove path kobjects whenever a device is being set offline. However, one corner case was missing. If a device is disabled and enabled (using the IOCTLs BIODASDDISABLE and BIODASDENABLE respectively), the enabling process will call dasd_eckd_reload_device() which itself calls dasd_eckd_read_conf() in order to update path information. During that update, dasd_eckd_clear_conf_data() clears all old data and also removes all kobjects. This will leave us with an inconsistent state of path kobjects and a subsequent path verification leads to a failing kobject creation. Fix this by removing kobjects only in the context of offlining a device as initially intended. Add a new sysfs attribute (fc_security) per device and per operational channel path. The information of the current FC Endpoint Security state is received through the CIO layer. The state of the FC Endpoint Security can be either "Unsupported", "Authentication", or "Encryption". In order to work with Extent Space Efficient (ESE) volumes, certain viable information about those volumes and the corresponding extent pool (such as extent size, configured space, allocated space, etc.) can be provided. Use the CCW commands Volume Storage Query and Logical Configuration Query to receive detailed information about ESE volumes and the extent pool respectively. These information are made accessible via internal functions for subsequent users, and via sysfs attributes for userpsace usage. It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to audit the kernel tree for correct licenses. Update the drivers/s390/block/ files with the correct SPDX license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. 2017-08-29s390/dasd: Add discard support for FBA devicesJan Höppner
The z/VM hypervisor provides virtual disks (VDISK) which are backed by main memory of the hypervisor. Those devices are seen as DASD FBA disks within the Linux guest. Whenever data is written to such a device, memory is allocated on-the-fly by z/VM accordingly. This memory, however, is not being freed if data on the device is deleted by the guest OS. In order to make memory usable after deletion again, add discard support to the FBA discipline. While at it, update comments regarding the DASD_FEATURE_* flags. 2017-06-28s390/dasd: Fix faulty ENODEV for RO sysfs attributeJan Höppner
If a device is offline it can still be set to read-only via the bus id through sysfs. Only the read-only feature flag for the ccw_device is then set. If the device is online the corresponding block device needs to be set to read-only as well (via set_disk_ro()). The check whether there is a device to do so, however, happens after the feature flag was set. This leads to an unnecessary "no such device" error in the offline case. This bug was introduced by commit 7571cb1c8e3cc ("s390/dasd: Make use of dasd_set_feature() more often"). Fix this by simply returning count if no device is available. 2017-06-12s390/dasd: fix unusable device after safe offline processingStefan Haberland
The safe offline processing needs, as well as the normal offline processing, to be locked against multiple parallel executions. But it should be able to be overtaken by a normal offline processing to make sure that the device does not wait forever for outstanding I/O if the user wants to. Unfortunately the parallel processing of safe offline and normal offline might lead to a race situation where both threads report successful execution to the CIO layer which in turn tries to deregister the kobject of the device twice. This leads to a refcount_t: underflow; use-after-free. error and the device is not able to be set online again afterwards without a reboot. Correct the locking of the safe offline processing by doing the following: - Use the cdev lock to secure all set and test operations to the device flags. - Two safe offline processes are locked against each other using the DASD_FLAG_SAFE_OFFLINE and DASD_FLAG_SAFE_OFFLINE_RUNNING device flags. The differentiation between offline triggered and offline running is needed since the normal offline attribute is owned by CIO and we have to pass over control in between. - The dasd_generic_set_offline process handles the offline processing. It is locked against parallel execution using the DASD_FLAG_OFFLINE. - Only a running safe offline should be able to be overtaken by a single normal offline. This is ensured by clearing the DASD_FLAG_SAFE_OFFLINE_RUNNING flag when a normal offline overtakes. So this can only happen ones. - The safe offline just aborts in this case doing nothing and the normal offline processing finishes as usual. We have two flags, DASD_FLAG_DEVICE_RO and DASD_FEATURE_READONLY, that tell us whether a device is read-only. DASD_FLAG_DEVICE_RO is set when a device is attached as read-only to z/VM and DASD_FEATURE_READONLY is set when either the corresponding kernel parameter is configured, or the read-only state is changed via sysfs. This is valuable information in any case. However, only the feature flag is being checked at the moment when we display the current state. Fix this by checking both flags. The function dasd_busid() still uses simple_strtoul() to convert a string to an integer value. This function is obsolete for quite some time already and should be replaced. The whole parameter parsing semantic still relies somewhat on the fact, that simple_strtoul() parses a string containing literals without complains and just returns the parsed integer value plus the residual string. kstrtoint(), however, would return -EINVAL in such a case. Since we want to get rid of simple_strtoul() and now have a nice dasd[] containing only single elements, we can clean up and simplify a few things. With this feature, the DASD device driver more robustly handles DASDs that are attached via multiple channel paths and are subject to constant Interface-Control-Checks (IFCCs) and Channel-Control-Checks (CCCs) or loss of High-Performance-FICON (HPF) functionality on one or more of these paths. If a channel path does not work correctly, it is removed from normal operation as long as other channel paths are available. All extended error recovery states can be queried and reset via user space interfaces. The function dasd_ro_store() calls set_disk_ro() to set the device in question read-only. Since set_disk_ro() might sleep, we can't call it while holding a lock. However, we also can't simply check if the device, block, and gdp references are valid before we call set_disk_ro() because an offline processing might have been started in the meanwhile which will destroy those references. In order to reliably call set_disk_ro() we have to ensure several things: - Still check validity of the mentioned references but additionally check if offline processing is running and bail out accordingly. Also, do this while holding the device lock. - To ensure that the block device is still safe after the lock, increase the open_count while still holding the device lock. The reference to a device in question may get lost when the extended error reporting (EER) attribute is being enabled/disabled while the device is set offline at the same time. This is due to missing refcounting and incorrect locking. Fix this by the following: - In dasd_eer_store() get the device directly and handle the refcount accordingly. - Move the lock in dasd_eer_enable() up so we can ensure safe processing. - Check if the device is being set offline and return with -EBUSY if so. - While at it, change the return code from -EPERM to -EMEDIUMTYPE as suggested by a FIXME, since that is what we're actually checking. When setting certain attributes, we actually set the according feature flag. Do this by using dasd_set_feature() at a few occurrences and remove duplicate code. In dasd_set_feature() dasd_find_busid() is used to retrieve the devmap for the device in question. Combined with the change above, this would require the device to be set online at least once so that a devmap is being created. Change that by using dasd_devmap_from_cdev() instead, which uses dasd_find_busid() first and will create a devmap accordingly if there is none yet. A DASD device consists of the device itself and a discipline with a corresponding private structure. These fields are set up during online processing right after the device is created and before it is processed by the state machine and made available for I/O. During offline processing the discipline pointer and the private data gets freed within the state machine and without protection of the existing reference count. This might lead to a kernel panic because a function might have taken a device reference and accesses the discipline pointer and/or private data of the device while this is already freed. Fix by freeing the discipline pointer and the private data after ensuring that there is no reference to the device left.
