git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski: "Core & protocols: - Wrap datapath globals into net_aligned_data, to avoid false sharing - Preserve MSG_ZEROCOPY in forwarding (e.g. out of a container) - Add SO_INQ and SCM_INQ support to AF_UNIX - Add SIOCINQ support to AF_VSOCK - Add TCP_MAXSEG sockopt to MPTCP - Add IPv6 force_forwarding sysctl to enable forwarding per interface - Make TCP validation of whether packet fully fits in the receive window and the rcv_buf more strict. With increased use of HW aggregation a single "packet" can be multiple 100s of kB - Add MSG_MORE flag to optimize large TCP transmissions via sockmap, improves latency up to 33% for sockmap users - Convert TCP send queue handling from tasklet to BH workque - Improve BPF iteration over TCP sockets to see each socket exactly once - Remove obsolete and unused TCP RFC3517/RFC6675 loss recovery code - Support enabling kernel threads for NAPI processing on per-NAPI instance basis rather than a whole device. Fully stop the kernel NAPI thread when threaded NAPI gets disabled. Previously thread would stick around until ifdown due to tricky synchronization - Allow multicast routing to take effect on locally-generated packets - Add output interface argument for End.X in segment routing - MCTP: add support for gateway routing, improve bind() handling - Don't require rtnl_lock when fetching an IPv6 neighbor over Netlink - Add a new neighbor flag ("extern_valid"), which cedes refresh responsibilities to userspace. 2025-07-01time/timecounter: Fix the lie that struct cyclecounter is constGreg Kroah-Hartman
In both the read callback for struct cyclecounter, and in struct timecounter, struct cyclecounter is declared as a const pointer. Unfortunatly, a number of users of this pointer treat it as a non-const pointer as it is burried in a larger structure that is heavily modified by the callback function when accessed. This lie had been hidden by the fact that container_of() "casts away" a const attribute of a pointer without any compiler warning happening at all. Fix this all up by removing the const attribute in the needed places so that everyone can see that the structure really isn't const, but can, and is, modified by the users of it. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Jakub Kicinski: "Core & protocols: - Continue Netlink conversions to per-namespace RTNL lock (IPv4 routing, routing rules, routing next hops, ARP ioctls) - Continue extending the use of netdev instance locks. As a driver opt-in protect queue operations and (in due course) ethtool operations with the instance lock and not RTNL lock. - Support collecting TCP timestamps (data submitted, sent, acked) in BPF, allowing for transparent (to the application) and lower overhead tracking of TCP RPC performance. - Tweak existing networking Rx zero-copy infra to support zero-copy Rx via io_uring. - Optimize MPTCP performance in single subflow mode by 29%. - Enable GRO on packets which went thru XDP CPU redirect (were queued for processing on a different CPU). Improving TCP stream performance up to 2x. - Improve performance of contended connect() by 200% by searching for an available 4-tuple under RCU rather than a spin lock. Bring an additional 229% improvement by tweaking hash distribution. - Avoid unconditionally touching sk_tsflags on RX, improving performance under UDP flood by as much as 10%. - Avoid skb_clone() dance in ping_rcv() to improve performance under ping flood. - Avoid FIB lookup in netfilter if socket is available, 20% perf win. - Rework network device creation (in-kernel) API to more clearly identify network namespaces and their roles. There are up to 4 namespace roles but we used to have just 2 netns pointer arguments, interpreted differently based on context. - Use sysfs_break_active_protection() instead of trylock to avoid deadlocks between unregistering objects and sysfs access. - Add a new sysctl and sockopt for capping max retransmit timeout in TCP. - Support masking port and DSCP in routing rule matches. - Support dumping IPv4 multicast addresses with RTM_GETMULTICAST. - Support specifying at what time packet should be sent on AF_XDP sockets. - Expose TCP ULP diagnostic info (for TLS and MPTCP) to non-admin users. - Add Netlink YAML spec for WiFi (nl80211) and conntrack. - Introduce EXPORT_IPV6_MOD() and EXPORT_IPV6_MOD_GPL() for symbols which only need to be exported when IPv6 support is built as a module. - Age FDB entries based on Rx not Tx traffic in VxLAN, similar to normal bridging. - Allow users to specify source port range for GENEVE tunnels. - netconsole: allow attaching kernel release, CPU ID and task name to messages as metadata Driver API: - Continue rework / fixing of Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) across the SW layers. 2024-05-23net: fec: avoid lock evasion when reading pps_enableWei Fang
The assignment of pps_enable is protected by tmreg_lock, but the read operation of pps_enable is not. So the Coverity tool reports a lock evasion warning which may cause data race to occur when running in a multithread environment. Although this issue is almost impossible to occur, we'd better fix it, at least it seems more logically reasonable, and it also prevents Coverity from continuing to issue warnings. 2023-08-02net: fec: delete fec_ptp_disable_hwts()Vladimir Oltean
Commit 340746398b67 ("net: fec: fix hardware time stamping by external devices") was overly cautious with calling fec_ptp_disable_hwts() when cmd == SIOCSHWTSTAMP and use_fec_hwts == false, because use_fec_hwts is based on a runtime invariant (phy_has_hwtstamp()). Thus, if use_fec_hwts is false, then fep->hwts_tx_en and fep->hwts_rx_en cannot be changed at runtime; their values depend on the initial memory allocation, which already sets them to zeroes. If the core will ever gain support for switching timestamping layers, it will arrange for a more organized calling convention and disable timestamping in the previous layer as a first step. This means that the code in the FEC driver is not necessary in any case. The purpose of this change is to arrange the phy_has_hwtstamp() code in a way in which it can be refactored away into generic logic. 2023-07-27net: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. They are all converted to use scaled_ppm_to_ppb to get the parts per billion value that their logic depends on. 2022-10-24net: fec: Add support for periodic output signal of PPSWei Fang
This patch adds the support for configuring periodic output signal of PPS. So the PPS can be output at a specified time and period. For developers or testers, they can use the command "echo <channel> <start.sec> <start.nsec> <period.sec> <period. nsec> > /sys/class/ptp/ptp0/period" to specify time and period to output PPS signal. Notice that, the channel can only be set to 0. In addtion, the start time must larger than the current PTP clock time. So users can use the command "phc_ctl /dev/ptp0 -- get" to get the current PTP clock time before. 2021-12-14net_tstamp: add new flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEXHangbin Liu
Since commit 94dd016ae538 ("bond: pass get_ts_info and SIOC[SG]HWTSTAMP ioctl to active device") the user could get bond active interface's PHC index directly. But when there is a failover, the bond active interface will change, thus the PHC index is also changed. This may break the user's program if they did not update the PHC timely. This patch adds a new hwtstamp_config flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEX. When the user wants to get the bond active interface's PHC, they need to add this flag and be aware the PHC index may be changed. With the new flag. All flag checks in current drivers are removed. When accessing the timecounter register on an i.MX8MQ the kernel hangs. This is only the case when the interface is down. This can be reproduced by reading with 'phc_ctrl eth0 get'. Like described in the change in 91c0d987a9788dcc5fe26baafd73bf9242b68900 the igp clock is disabled when the interface is down and leads to a system hang. 2020-09-25drivers/net/ethernet: clean up mis-targeted commentsJesse Brandeburg
As part of the W=1 cleanups for ethernet, a million [*] driver comments had to be cleaned up to get the W=1 compilation to succeed. This change finally makes the drivers/net/ethernet tree compile with W=1 set on the command line. NOTE: The kernel uses kdoc style (see Documentation/process/kernel-doc.rst) when documenting code, not doxygen or other styles. After this patch the x86_64 build has no warnings from W=1, however scripts/kernel-doc says there are 1545 more warnings in source files, that I need to develop a script to fix in a followup patch. The errors fixed here are all kdoc of a few classes, with a few outliers: In file included from drivers/net/ethernet/qlogic/netxen/netxen_nic_hw.c:10: drivers/net/ethernet/qlogic/netxen/netxen_nic.h:1193:18: warning: ‘FW_DUMP_LEVELS’ defined but not used [-Wunused-const-variable=] 1193 | static const u32 FW_DUMP_LEVELS[] = { 0x3, 0x7, 0xf, 0x1f, 0x3f, 0x7f, 0xff }; | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ... repeats 4 times... drivers/net/ethernet/sun/cassini.c:2084:24: warning: suggest braces around empty body in an ‘else’ statement [-Wempty-body] 2084 | RX_USED_ADD(page, i); drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c: In function ‘phy_intr’: drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c:603:6: warning: variable ‘tbisr’ set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-variable] 603 | u32 tbisr, tanar, tanlpar; | ^~~~~ drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c: In function ‘ns83820_get_link_ksettings’: drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c:1207:11: warning: variable ‘tanar’ set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-variable] 1207 | u32 cfg, tanar, tbicr; | ^~~~~ drivers/net/ethernet/packetengines/yellowfin.c:1063:18: warning: variable ‘yf_size’ set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-variable] 1063 | int data_size, yf_size; | ^~~~~~~ Normal kdoc fixes: warning: Function parameter or member 'x' not described in 'y' warning: Excess function parameter 'x' description in 'y' warning: Cannot understand <string> on line <NNN> - I thought it was a doc line [*] - ok it wasn't quite a million, but it felt like it. The UDP reuseport conflict was a little bit tricky. The net-next code, via bpf-next, extracted the reuseport handling into a helper so that the BPF sk lookup code could invoke it. At the same time, the logic for reuseport handling of unconnected sockets changed via commit efc6b6f6c3113e8b203b9debfb72d81e0f3dcace which changed the logic to carry on the reuseport result into the rest of the lookup loop if we do not return immediately. This requires moving the reuseport_has_conns() logic into the callers. While we are here, get rid of inline directives as they do not belong in foo.c files. The other changes were cases of more straightforward overlapping modifications. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
