2025-06-17net: enetc: replace PCVLANR1/2 with SICVLANR1/2 and remove dead branchWei Fang
Both PF and VF have rx-vlan-offload enabled, however, the PCVLANR1/2 registers are resources controlled by PF, so VF cannot access these two registers. Fortunately, the hardware provides SICVLANR1/2 registers for each SI to reflect the value of PCVLANR1/2 registers. Therefore, use SICVLANR1/2 instead of PCVLANR1/2. Note that this is not an issue in actual use, because the current driver does not support custom TPID, the driver will not access these two registers in actual use, so this modification is just an optimization. In addition, since ENETC_RXBD_FLAG_TPID is defined as GENMASK(1, 0), the possible values are only 0, 1, 2, 3, so the default branch will never be true, so remove the default branch. 2025-05-13net: enetc: convert to ndo_hwtstamp_get() and ndo_hwtstamp_set()Vladimir Oltean
New timestamping API was introduced in commit 66f7223039c0 ("net: add NDOs for configuring hardware timestamping") from kernel v6.6. It is time to convert the ENETC driver to the new API, so that the ndo_eth_ioctl() path can be removed completely. Move the enetc_hwtstamp_get() and enetc_hwtstamp_set() calls away from enetc_ioctl() to dedicated net_device_ops for the LS1028A PF and VF (NETC v4 does not yet implement enetc_ioctl()), adapt the prototypes and export these symbols (enetc_ioctl() is also exported). Receive side scaling (RSS) is a network driver technology that enables the efficient distribution of network receive processing across multiple CPUs in multiprocessor systems. Therefore, it is better to enable RSS by default so that the CPU load can be balanced and network performance can be improved when then network is enabled. 2025-05-08net: enetc: add RSS support for i.MX95 ENETC PFWei Fang
Compared with LS1028A, there are two main differences: first, i.MX95 ENETC uses NTMP 2.0 to manage the RSS table, and second, the offset of the RSS Key registers is different. Some modifications have been made in the previous patches based on these differences to ensure that the relevant interfaces are compatible with i.MX95. So it's time to add RSS support to i.MX95 ENETC PF. 2025-05-08net: enetc: move generic MAC filtering interfaces to enetc-coreWei Fang
Although only ENETC PF can access the MAC address filter table, the table entries can specify MAC address filtering for one or more SIs based on SI_BITMAP, which means that the table also supports MAC address filtering for VFs. Currently, only the ENETC v1 PF driver supports MAC address filtering. In order to add the MAC address filtering support for the ENETC v4 PF driver and VF driver in the future, the relevant generic interfaces are moved to the enetc-core driver. This lays the basis for i.MX95 ENETC PF and VFs to support MAC address filtering. 2025-04-21net: enetc: fix frame corruption on bpf_xdp_adjust_head/tail() and XDP_PASSVladimir Oltean
Vlatko Markovikj reported that XDP programs attached to ENETC do not work well if they use bpf_xdp_adjust_head() or bpf_xdp_adjust_tail(), combined with the XDP_PASS verdict. A typical use case is to add or remove a VLAN tag. The resulting sk_buff passed to the stack is corrupted, because the algorithm used by the driver for XDP_PASS is to unwind the current buffer pointer in the RX ring and to re-process the current frame with enetc_build_skb() as if XDP hadn't run. That is incorrect because XDP may have modified the geometry of the buffer, which we then are completely unaware of. We are looking at a modified buffer with the original geometry. The initial reaction, both from me and from Vlatko, was to shop around the kernel for code to steal that would calculate a delta between the old and the new XDP buffer geometry, and apply that to the sk_buff too. We noticed that veth and generic xdp have such code. The headroom adjustment is pretty uncontroversial, but what turned out severely problematic is the tailroom. veth has this snippet: __skb_put(skb, off); /* positive on grow, negative on shrink */ which on first sight looks decent enough, except __skb_put() takes an "unsigned int" for the second argument, and the arithmetic seems to only work correctly by coincidence. Second issue, __skb_put() contains a SKB_LINEAR_ASSERT(). It's not a great pattern to make more widespread. The skb may still be nonlinear at that point - it only becomes linear later when resetting skb->data_len to zero. To avoid the above, bpf_prog_run_generic_xdp() does this instead: skb_set_tail_pointer(skb, xdp->data_end - xdp->data); skb->len += off; /* positive on grow, negative on shrink */ which is more open-coded, uses lower-level functions and is in general a bit too much to spread around in driver code. Then there is the snippet: if (xdp_buff_has_frags(xdp)) skb->data_len = skb_shinfo(skb)->xdp_frags_size; else skb->data_len = 0; One would have expected __pskb_trim() to be the function of choice for this task. But it's not used in veth/xdpgeneric because the extraneous fragments were _already_ freed by bpf_xdp_adjust_tail() -> bpf_xdp_frags_shrink_tail() -> ... -> __xdp_return() - the backing memory for the skb frags and the xdp frags is the same, but they don't keep individual references. In fact, that is the biggest reason why this snippet cannot be reused as-is, because ENETC temporarily constructs an skb with the original len and the original number of frags. Because the extraneous frags are already freed by bpf_xdp_adjust_tail() and returned to the page allocator, it means the entire approach of using enetc_build_skb() is questionable for XDP_PASS. To avoid that, one would need to elevate the page refcount of all frags before calling bpf_prog_run_xdp() and drop it after XDP_PASS. There are other things that are missing in ENETC's handling of XDP_PASS, like for example updating skb_shinfo(skb)->meta_len. These are all handled correctly and cleanly in commit 539c1fba1ac7 ("xdp: add generic xdp_build_skb_from_buff()"), added to net-next in Dec 2024, and in addition might even be quicker that way. I have a very strong preference towards backporting that commit for "stable", and that is what is used to fix the handling bugs. It is way too messy to go this deep into the guts of an sk_buff from the code of a device driver. 2025-04-21net: enetc: refactor bulk flipping of RX buffers to separate functionVladimir Oltean
This small snippet of code ensures that we do something with the array of RX software buffer descriptor elements after passing the skb to the stack. In this case, we see if the other half of the page is reusable, and if so, we "turn around" the buffers, making them directly usable by enetc_refill_rx_ring() without going to enetc_new_page(). We will need to perform this kind of buffer flipping from a new code path, i.e. from XDP_PASS. Currently, enetc_build_skb() does it there buffer by buffer, but in a subsequent change we will stop using enetc_build_skb() for XDP_PASS. 2025-04-21net: enetc: register XDP RX queues with frag_sizeVladimir Oltean
At the time when bpf_xdp_adjust_tail() gained support for non-linear buffers, ENETC was already generating this kind of geometry on RX, due to its use of 2K half page buffers. Frames larger than 1472 bytes (without FCS) are stored as multi-buffer, presenting a need for multi buffer support to work properly even in standard MTU circumstances. Allow bpf_xdp_frags_increase_tail() to know the allocation size of paged data, so it can safely permit growing the tailroom of the buffer from XDP programs. There is an issue with one-step timestamp based on UDP/IP. The peer will discard the sync packet because of the wrong UDP checksum. For ENETC v1, the software needs to update the UDP checksum when updating the originTimestamp field, so that the hardware can correctly update the UDP checksum when updating the correction field. Otherwise, the UDP checksum in the sync packet will be wrong. 2024-12-23net: enetc: add LSO support for i.MX95 ENETC PFWei Fang
ENETC rev 4.1 supports large send offload (LSO), segmenting large TCP and UDP transmit units into multiple Ethernet frames. To support LSO, software needs to fill some auxiliary information in Tx BD, such as LSO header length, frame length, LSO maximum segment size, etc. At 1Gbps link rate, TCP segmentation was tested using iperf3, and the CPU performance before and after applying the patch was compared through the top command. It can be seen that LSO saves a significant amount of CPU cycles compared to software TSO. 2024-12-23net: enetc: update max chained Tx BD number for i.MX95 ENETCWei Fang
The max chained Tx BDs of latest ENETC (i.MX95 ENETC, rev 4.1) has been increased to 63, but since the range of MAX_SKB_FRAGS is 17~45, so for i.MX95 ENETC and later revision, it is better to set ENETC4_MAX_SKB_FRAGS to MAX_SKB_FRAGS. In addition, add max_frags in struct enetc_drvdata to indicate the max chained BDs supported by device. Because the max number of chained BDs supported by LS1028A and i.MX95 ENETC is different. 2024-12-23net: enetc: add Tx checksum offload for i.MX95 ENETCWei Fang
In addition to supporting Rx checksum offload, i.MX95 ENETC also supports Tx checksum offload. The transmit checksum offload is implemented through the Tx BD. To support Tx checksum offload, software needs to fill some auxiliary information in Tx BD, such as IP version, IP header offset and size, whether L4 is UDP or TCP, etc. Same as Rx checksum offload, Tx checksum offload capability isn't defined in register, so tx_csum bit is added to struct enetc_drvdata to indicate whether the device supports Tx checksum offload. 2024-11-29net: enetc: Do not configure preemptible TCs if SIs do not supportWei Fang
Both ENETC PF and VF drivers share enetc_setup_tc_mqprio() to configure MQPRIO. And enetc_setup_tc_mqprio() calls enetc_change_preemptible_tcs() to configure preemptible TCs. However, only PF is able to configure preemptible TCs. Because only PF has related registers, while VF does not have these registers. So for VF, its hw->port pointer is NULL. Therefore, VF will access an invalid pointer when accessing a non-existent register, which will cause a crash issue. Configuring TSN (Qbv, Qbu, PSFP) capabilities requires access to port registers, which are available to the PSI but not the VSI. Yet, the SI port capability register 0 (PSICAPR0), exposed to both PSIs and VSIs, presents the same capabilities to the VF as to the PF, thus leading the VF driver into thinking it can configure these features. These capability bits are in the process of being defeatured from the SI registers. We should read them from the port capability register, where they are also present, and which is naturally only exposed to the PF. The change to blame (relevant for stable backports) is the one where this started being a problem, aka when the kernel started to crash due to the wrong capability seen by the VF driver. Therefore, the fsl-enetc driver is incompatible with i.MX95 ENETC PF. So add new nxp-enetc4 driver to support i.MX95 ENETC PF, and this driver will be used to support the ENETC PF with major revision 4 for other SoCs in the future. Currently, the nxp-enetc4 driver only supports basic transmission feature for i.MX95 ENETC PF, the more basic and advanced features will be added in the subsequent patches. In addition, PCS support has not been added yet, so 10G ENETC (ENETC instance 2) is not supported now. 2024-11-04net: enetc: optimize the allocation of tx_bdrClark Wang
There is a situation where num_tx_rings cannot be divided by bdr_int_num. For example, num_tx_rings is 8 and bdr_int_num is 3. According to the previous logic, this results in two tx_bdr corresponding memories not being allocated, so when sending packets to tx ring 6 or 7, wild pointers will be accessed. Of course, this issue doesn't exist on LS1028A, because its num_tx_rings is 8, and bdr_int_num is either 1 or 2. However, there is a risk for the upcoming i.MX95. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that each tx_bdr can be allocated to the corresponding memory. 2024-11-03dim: pass dim_sample to net_dim() by referenceCaleb Sander Mateos
net_dim() is currently passed a struct dim_sample argument by value. struct dim_sample is 24 bytes. Since this is greater 16 bytes, x86-64 passes it on the stack. All callers have already initialized dim_sample on the stack, so passing it by value requires pushing a duplicated copy to the stack. Either witing to the stack and immediately reading it, or perhaps dereferencing addresses relative to the stack pointer in a chain of push instructions, seems to perform quite poorly. 2024-10-11net: enetc: disable NAPI after all rings are disabledWei Fang
When running "xdp-bench tx eno0" to test the XDP_TX feature of ENETC on LS1028A, it was found that if the command was re-run multiple times, Rx could not receive the frames, and the result of xdp-bench showed that the rx rate was 0. root@ls1028ardb:~# ./xdp-bench tx eno0 Hairpinning (XDP_TX) packets on eno0 (ifindex 3; driver fsl_enetc) Summary 2046 rx/s 0 err,drop/s Summary 0 rx/s 0 err,drop/s Summary 0 rx/s 0 err,drop/s Summary 0 rx/s 0 err,drop/s By observing the Rx PIR and CIR registers, CIR is always 0x7FF and PIR is always 0x7FE, which means that the Rx ring is full and can no longer accommodate other Rx frames. Therefore, the problem is caused by the Rx BD ring not being cleaned up. Further analysis of the code revealed that the Rx BD ring will only be cleaned if the "cleaned_cnt > xdp_tx_in_flight" condition is met. Therefore, some debug logs were added to the driver and the current values of cleaned_cnt and xdp_tx_in_flight were printed when the Rx BD ring was full. The logs are as follows. However, the size of the Rx BD ring is only 2048. So xdp_tx_in_flight did not drop to 0 after enetc_stop() is called and the driver does not clear it. The root cause is that NAPI is disabled too aggressively, without having waited for the pending XDP_TX frames to be transmitted, and their buffers recycled, so that xdp_tx_in_flight cannot naturally drop to 0. Later, enetc_free_tx_ring() does free those stale, unsent XDP_TX packets, but it is not coded up to also reset xdp_tx_in_flight, hence the manifestation of the bug. One option would be to cover this extra condition in enetc_free_tx_ring(), but now that the ENETC_TX_DOWN exists, we have created a window at the beginning of enetc_stop() where NAPI can still be scheduled, but any concurrent enqueue will be blocked. Therefore, enetc_wait_bdrs() and enetc_disable_tx_bdrs() can be called with NAPI still scheduled, and it is guaranteed that this will not wait indefinitely, but instead give us an indication that the pending TX frames have orderly dropped to zero. Only then should we call napi_disable(). This way, enetc_free_tx_ring() becomes entirely redundant and can be dropped as part of subsequent cleanup. The change also refactors enetc_start() so that it looks like the mirror opposite procedure of enetc_stop(). 2024-10-11net: enetc: disable Tx BD rings after they are emptyWei Fang
The Tx BD rings are disabled first in enetc_stop() and the driver waits for them to become empty. This operation is not safe while the ring is actively transmitting frames, and will cause the ring to not be empty and hardware exception. As described in the NETC block guide, software should only disable an active Tx ring after all pending ring entries have been consumed (i.e. when PI = CI). Disabling a transmit ring that is actively processing BDs risks a HW-SW race hazard whereby a hardware resource becomes assigned to work on one or more ring entries only to have those entries be removed due to the ring becoming disabled. When testing XDP_REDIRECT feautre, although all frames were blocked from being put into Tx rings during ring reconfiguration, the similar warning log was still encountered: fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #6 clear fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #7 clear The reason is that when there are still unsent frames in the Tx ring, disabling the Tx ring causes the remaining frames to be unable to be sent out. And the Tx ring cannot be restored, which means that even if the xdp program is uninstalled, the Tx frames cannot be sent out anymore. Therefore, correct the operation order in enect_start() and enect_stop(). Because XDP ignores the state set by the netif_tx_wake_queue() API, so introduce the ENETC_TX_DOWN flag to suppress transmission of XDP frames. The rx_bytes of struct net_device_stats should count the length of ethernet frames excluding the FCS. However, there are two problems with the rx_bytes statistics of the current enetc driver. one is that the length of VLAN header is not counted if the VLAN extraction feature is enabled. The other is that the length of L2 header is not counted, because eth_type_trans() is invoked before updating rx_bytes which will subtract the length of L2 header from skb->len. BTW, the rx_bytes statistics of XDP path also have similar problem, I will fix it in another patch. This was left as TODO in commit 01e23b2b3bad ("net: enetc: add support for preemptible traffic classes") since it's relatively complicated. Where this makes a difference is with a configuration as follows: ethtool --set-mm eno0 pmac-enabled on tx-enabled on verify-enabled on Preemptible packets should only be sent when the MAC Merge TX direction becomes active (i.o.w. when the verification process succeeds, aka when the link partner confirms it can process preemptible traffic). But the tc qdisc with the preemptible traffic classes is offloaded completely asynchronously w.r.t. the MM becoming active. The ENETC manual does suggest that this should be handled in the driver: "On startup, software should wait for the verification process to complete (MMCSR[VSTS]=011) before initiating traffic". Adding the necessary logic allows future selftests to uphold the claim that an inactive or disabled MAC Merge layer should never send data packets through the pMAC. This change moves enetc_set_ptcfpr() from enetc.c to enetc_ethtool.c, where its only caller is now - enetc_mm_commit_preemptible_tcs(). 2023-04-13net: enetc: add support for preemptible traffic classesVladimir Oltean
PFs which support the MAC Merge layer also have a set of 8 registers called "Port traffic class N frame preemption register (PTC0FPR - PTC7FPR)". Through these, a traffic class (group of TX rings of same dequeue priority) can be mapped to the eMAC or to the pMAC. There's nothing particularly spectacular here. We should probably only commit the preemptible TCs to hardware once the MAC Merge layer became active, but unlike Felix, we don't have an IRQ that notifies us of that. We'd have to sleep for up to verifyTime (127 ms) to wait for a resolution coming from the verification state machine; not only from the ndo_setup_tc() code path, but also from enetc_mm_link_state_update(). Since it's relatively complicated and has a relatively small benefit, I'm not doing it. Regardless of the requested queue count per traffic class, the enetc driver allocates a number of TX rings equal to the number of TCs, and hardcodes a queue configuration of "1@0 1@1 ... 1@max-tc". Other configurations are silently ignored and treated the same. Improve that by allowing what the user requests to be actually fulfilled. This allows more than one TX ring per traffic class. The enetc driver does not validate the mqprio queue configuration, so it currently allows things like this: $ tc qdisc add dev swp0 root handle 1: mqprio num_tc 8 \ map 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 queues 3@0 1@1 1@2 1@3 1@4 1@5 1@6 1@7 hw 1 But also things like this, completely omitting the queue configuration: $ tc qdisc add dev eno0 root handle 1: mqprio num_tc 8 \ map 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 hw 1 By requesting validation via the mqprio capability structure, this is no longer allowed, and we bring what is accepted by hardware in line with what is accepted by software. The check that num_tc <= real_num_tx_queues also becomes superfluous and can be dropped, because mqprio_validate_queue_counts() validates that no TXQ range exceeds real_num_tx_queues. That is a stronger check, because there is at least 1 TXQ per TC, so there are at least as many TXQs as TCs. 2023-02-03net: enetc: ensure we always have a minimum number of TXQs for stackVladimir Oltean
Currently it can happen that an mqprio qdisc is installed with num_tc 8, and this will reserve 8 (out of 8) TXQs for the network stack. Then we can attach an XDP program, and this will crop 2 TXQs, leaving just 6 for mqprio. That's not what the user requested, and we should fail it. On the other hand, if mqprio isn't requested, we still give the 8 TXQs to the network stack (with hashing among a single traffic class), but then, cropping 2 TXQs for XDP is fine, because the user didn't explicitly ask for any number of TXQs, so no expectations are violated. Simply put, the logic that mqprio should impose a minimum number of TXQs for the network never existed. Let's say (more or less arbitrarily) that without mqprio, the driver expects a minimum number of TXQs equal to the number of CPUs (on NXP LS1028A, that is either 1, or 2). And with mqprio, mqprio gives the minimum required number of TXQs. 2023-02-03net: enetc: recalculate num_real_tx_queues when XDP program attachesVladimir Oltean
Since the blamed net-next commit, enetc_setup_xdp_prog() no longer goes through enetc_open(), and therefore, the function which was supposed to detect whether a BPF program exists (in order to crop some TX queues from network stack usage), enetc_num_stack_tx_queues(), no longer gets called. We can move the netif_set_real_num_rx_queues() call to enetc_alloc_msix() (probe time), since it is a runtime invariant. We can do the same thing with netif_set_real_num_tx_queues(), and let enetc_reconfigure_xdp_cb() explicitly recalculate and change the number of stack TX queues.
