2025-07-01time/timecounter: Fix the lie that struct cyclecounter is constGreg Kroah-Hartman
In both the read callback for struct cyclecounter, and in struct timecounter, struct cyclecounter is declared as a const pointer. Unfortunatly, a number of users of this pointer treat it as a non-const pointer as it is burried in a larger structure that is heavily modified by the callback function when accessed. This lie had been hidden by the fact that container_of() "casts away" a const attribute of a pointer without any compiler warning happening at all. Fix this all up by removing the const attribute in the needed places so that everyone can see that the structure really isn't const, but can, and is, modified by the users of it. 2025-04-25bnxt_en: improve TX timestamping FIFO configurationVadim Fedorenko
Reconfiguration of netdev may trigger close/open procedure which can break FIFO status by adjusting the amount of empty slots for TX timestamps. But it is not really needed because timestamps for the packets sent over the wire still can be retrieved. On the other side, during netdev close procedure any skbs waiting for TX timestamps can be leaked because there is no cleaning procedure called. Free skbs waiting for TX timestamps when closing netdev. Instead of passing the 2nd parameter phc_cfg to bnxt_ptp_init(). Store it in bp->ptp_cfg so that the caller doesn't need to know what the value should be. 2024-11-15bnxt_en: optimize gettimex64Vadim Fedorenko
Current implementation of gettimex64() makes at least 3 PCIe reads to get current PHC time. It takes at least 2.2us to get this value back to userspace. At the same time there is cached value of upper bits of PHC available for packet timestamps already. This patch reuses cached value to speed up reading of PHC time. 2024-11-11bnxt_en: add unlocked version of bnxt_refclk_readVadim Fedorenko
Serialization of PHC read with FW reset mechanism uses ptp_lock which also protects timecounter updates. This means we cannot grab it when called from bnxt_cc_read(). 2024-11-05bnxt_en: replace PTP spinlock with seqlockVadim Fedorenko
We can see high contention on ptp_lock while doing RX timestamping on high packet rates over several queues. Spinlock is not effecient to protect timecounter for RX timestamps when reads are the most usual operations and writes are only occasional. It's better to use seqlock in such cases. 2024-11-05bnxt_en: cache only 24 bits of hw counterVadim Fedorenko
This hardware can provide only 48 bits of cycle counter. We can leave only 24 bits in the cache to extend RX timestamps from 32 bits to 48 bits. Lower 8 bits of the cached value will be used to check for roll-over while extending to full 48 bits. This change makes cache writes atomic even on 32 bit platforms and we can simply use READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() pair and remove spinlock. The configuration structure will be also reduced by 4 bytes. If the timeout value passed to bnxt_hwrm_port_ts_query() is less than the FW max value, we will use that value to precisely control the specified timeout. 2023-03-13bnxt_en: reset PHC frequency in free-running modeVadim Fedorenko
When using a PHC in shared between multiple hosts, the previous frequency value may not be reset and could lead to host being unable to compensate the offset with timecounter adjustments. To avoid such state reset the hardware frequency of PHC to zero on init. Some refactoring is needed to make code readable. 2022-11-11ptp: bnxt: convert .adjfreq to .adjfineJacob Keller
When the BNXT_FW_CAP_PTP_RTC flag is not set, the bnxt driver implements .adjfreq on a cyclecounter in terms of the straightforward "base * ppb / 1 billion" calculation. When BNXT_FW_CAP_PTP_RTC is set, the driver forwards the ppb value to firmware for configuration. Convert the driver to the newer .adjfine interface, updating the cyclecounter calculation to use adjust_by_scaled_ppm to perform the calculation. Use scaled_ppm_to_ppb when forwarding the correction to firmware. 2022-11-08bnxt_en: Add a non-real time mode to access NIC clockPavan Chebbi
When using a PHC that is shared between multiple hosts, in order to achieve consistent timestamps across all hosts, we need to isolate the PHC from any host making frequency adjustments. This patch adds a non-real time mode for this purpose. The implementation is based on a free running NIC hardware timer which is used as the timestamper time-base. Each host implements individual adjustments to a local timecounter based on the NIC free running timer. 2022-09-22bnxt_en: replace reset with config timestampsVadim Fedorenko
Any change to the hardware timestamps configuration triggers nic restart, which breaks transmition and reception of network packets for a while. But there is no need to fully restart the device because while configuring hardware timestamps. The code for changing configuration runs after all of the initialisation, when the NIC is actually up and running. This patch changes the code that ioctl will only update configuration registers and will not trigger carrier status change, but in case of timestamps for all rx packetes it fallbacks to close()/open() sequnce because of synchronization issues in the hardware. 2021-12-14net_tstamp: add new flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEXHangbin Liu
Since commit 94dd016ae538 ("bond: pass get_ts_info and SIOC[SG]HWTSTAMP ioctl to active device") the user could get bond active interface's PHC index directly. But when there is a failover, the bond active interface will change, thus the PHC index is also changed. This may break the user's program if they did not update the PHC timely. This patch adds a new hwtstamp_config flag HWTSTAMP_FLAG_BONDED_PHC_INDEX. When the user wants to get the bond active interface's PHC, they need to add this flag and be aware the PHC index may be changed. With the new flag. All flag checks in current drivers are removed. 2021-08-30bnxt_en: update all firmware calls to use the new APIsEdwin Peer
The conversion follows this general pattern for most of the calls: 1. The input message is changed from a stack variable initialized using bnxt_hwrm_cmd_hdr_init() to a pointer allocated and intialized using hwrm_req_init(). 2. If we don't need to read the firmware response, the hwrm_send_message() call is replaced with hwrm_req_send(). 3. If we need to read the firmware response, the mutex lock is replaced by hwrm_req_hold() to hold the response. When the response is read, the mutex unlock is replaced by hwrm_req_drop(). If additional DMA buffers are needed for firmware response data, the hwrm_req_dma_slice() is used instead of calling dma_alloc_coherent().
