2025-07-11media: uvcvideo: Do not mark valid metadata as invalidRicardo Ribalda
Currently, the driver performs a length check of the metadata buffer before the actual metadata size is known and before the metadata is decided to be copied. This results in valid metadata buffers being incorrectly marked as invalid. Move the length check to occur after the metadata size is determined and is decided to be copied. 2025-01-02media: uvcvideo: Implement dual stream quirk to fix loss of usb packetsIsaac Scott
Some cameras, such as the Sonix Technology Co. 292A, exhibit issues when running two parallel streams, causing USB packets to be dropped when an H.264 stream posts a keyframe while an MJPEG stream is running simultaneously. This occasionally causes the driver to erroneously output two consecutive JPEG images as a single frame. To fix this, we inspect the buffer, and trigger a new frame when we find an SOI. 2024-06-17media: uvcvideo: Fix hw timestamp handling for slow FPSRicardo Ribalda
In UVC 1.5 we get a single clock value per frame. With the current buffer size of 32, FPS slowers than 32 might roll-over twice. The current code cannot handle two roll-over and provide invalid timestamps. Revome all the samples from the circular buffer that are more than two rollovers old, so the algorithm always provides good timestamps. Note that we are removing values that are more than one second old, which means that there is enough distance between the two points that we use for the interpolation to provide good values. With UVC 1.5 we get as little as one clock sample per frame. Which means that it takes 32 frames to move from the software timestamp to the hardware timestamp method. This results in abrupt changes in the timestamping after 32 frames (~1 second), resulting in noticeable artifacts when used for encoding. We can think of the UVC hardware clock as a system with a coarse clock (the SOF) and a fine clock (the PTS). The coarse clock can be replaced with a clock on the same frequency, if the jitter of such clock is smaller than its sampling rate. That way we can save some of the precision of the fine clock. Some SunplusIT devices send, e.g., buffer: 0xa7755c00 len 000012 header:0x8c stc 00000000 sof 0000 pts 00000000 buffer: 0xa7755c00 len 000012 header:0x8c stc 00000000 sof 0000 pts 00000000 buffer: 0xa7755c00 len 000668 header:0x8c stc 73779dba sof 070c pts 7376d37a While the UVC specification meant that the first two packets shouldn't have had the SCR bit set in the header. This borderline/buggy interpretation has been implemented in a variety of devices, from directly SunplusIT and from other OEMs that rebrand SunplusIT products. So quirking based on VID:PID will be problematic. All the affected modules have the following extension unit: VideoControl Interface Descriptor: guidExtensionCode {82066163-7050-ab49-b8cc-b3855e8d221d} But the vendor plans to use that GUID in the future and fix the bug, this means that we should use heuristic to figure out the broken packets. This patch takes care of this. lsusb of one of the affected cameras: Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1bcf:2a01 Sunplus Innovation Technology Inc. 2024-06-17media: uvcvideo: Support timestamp lists of any sizeRicardo Ribalda
The tail of the list lives at the position before the head. This is mathematically noted as: ``` (head-1) mod size. ``` Unfortunately C, does not have a modulus operator, but a remainder operator (%). The reminder operation has a different result than the modulus if (head -1) is a negative number and size is not a power of two. Adding size to (head-1) allows the code to run with any value of size. This does not change the current behaviour of the driver, as the size is always a power of two, but avoid tedious debugging if we ever change its size. 2023-12-09media: uvcvideo: Pick first best alternate setting insteed of lastLaurent Pinchart
When selecting an alternate setting, the driver loops over all available alternate settings to find the one with the lowest bandwidth high enough for the selected format and resolution. While all alternate settings should have different packet sizes, some buggy devices report multiple alternate settings with the same size. The driver happens to pick the last one in this case. In theory this should work fine, but in real life we have device bugs. The Ali Corp. Newmine Camera (0402:8841) exposes four alternate settings with the same packet size. The first three seem to work fine, while selecting the last one results in lots of transmission errors. Switch to using the first best alternate setting when multiple are present. This should be safe (last famous words), as sniffing USB traffic with the faulty device shows that Windows 10 picks the first alternate setting, and devices are typically tested on Windows. Rename uvc_trace_param to uvc_dbg_param Rename UVC_TRACE_<FOO> defines to UVC_DBG_<FOO> Use ## concatenation in uvc_dbg macros to avoid overly long and repetitive UVC_DBG uses Signed-off-by: Joe Perches <joe@perches.com> Signed-off-by: Laurent Pinchart <laurent.pinchart@ideasonboard.com> Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab+huawei@kernel.org>
2021-01-27media: uvcvideo: use dev_printk() for uvc_trace()Ricardo Ribalda
Instead of calling prink() inside uvc_trace, use dev_printk(), which adds context to the output. Now that we are at it, regroup the strings so the messages can be easily "grepable". 2021-01-27media: uvcvideo: Use dev_ printk aliasesRicardo Ribalda
Replace all the uses of printk() and uvc_printk() with its equivalent dev_ alias macros. Modify uvc_warn_once() macro to use dev_info instead printk(). They are more standard across the kernel tree and provide more context about the error. 2020-07-16treewide: Remove uninitialized_var() usageKees Cook
Using uninitialized_var() is dangerous as it papers over real bugs[1] (or can in the future), and suppresses unrelated compiler warnings (e.g. "unused variable"). If the compiler thinks it is uninitialized, either simply initialize the variable or make compiler changes. In preparation for removing[2] the[3] macro[4], remove all remaining needless uses with the following script: git grep '\buninitialized_var\b' | cut -d: -f1 | sort -u | \ xargs perl -pi -e \ 's/\buninitialized_var\(([^\)]+)\)/\1/g; s:\s*/\* (GCC be quiet|to make compiler happy) \*/$::g;' drivers/video/fbdev/riva/riva_hw.c was manually tweaked to avoid pathological white-space. No outstanding warnings were found building allmodconfig with GCC 9.3.0 for x86_64, i386, arm64, arm, powerpc, powerpc64le, s390x, mips, sparc64, alpha, and m68k. 2019-02-07media: uvcvideo: Avoid NULL pointer dereference at the end of streamingSakari Ailus
The UVC video driver converts the timestamp from hardware specific unit to one known by the kernel at the time when the buffer is dequeued. This is fine in general, but the streamoff operation consists of the following steps (among other things): 1. uvc_video_clock_cleanup --- the hardware clock sample array is released and the pointer to the array is set to NULL, 2. buffers in active state are returned to the user and 3. buf_finish callback is called on buffers that are prepared. buf_finish includes calling uvc_video_clock_update that accesses the hardware clock sample array. The above is serialised by a queue specific mutex. Address the problem by skipping the clock conversion if the hardware clock sample array is already released. 2018-12-05media: uvcvideo: Rename uvc_{un,}init_video()Kieran Bingham
We have both uvc_init_video() and uvc_video_init() calls which can be quite confusing to determine the process for each. Now that video uvc_video_enable() has been renamed to uvc_video_start_streaming(), adapt these calls to suit the new flow. Rename uvc_init_video() to uvc_video_start_transfer() and uvc_uninit_video() to uvc_video_stop_transfer(). 2018-12-05media: uvcvideo: Split uvc_video_enable into twoKieran Bingham
uvc_video_enable() is used both to start and stop the video stream object, however the single function entry point shares no code between the two operations. Split the function into two distinct calls, and rename to uvc_video_start_streaming() and uvc_video_stop_streaming() as appropriate. 2018-12-05media: uvcvideo: Move decode processing to process contextKieran Bingham
Newer high definition cameras, and cameras with multiple lenses such as the range of stereo-vision cameras now available have ever increasing data rates. The inclusion of a variable length packet header in URB packets mean that we must memcpy the frame data out to our destination 'manually'. This can result in data rates of up to 2 gigabits per second being processed. To improve efficiency, and maximise throughput, handle the URB decode processing through a work queue to move it from interrupt context, and allow multiple processors to work on URBs in parallel.
