2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. 2023-06-08drm/mxsfb: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert the mxsfb driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. 2023-01-10drm/mxsfb: improve clk handling for axi clkUwe Kleine-König
Ignoring errors from devm_clk_get() is wrong. To handle not all platforms having an axi clk use devm_clk_get_optional() instead and do proper error handling. Also the clk API handles NULL as a dummy clk (which is also returned by devm_clk_get_optional() if there is no clk) so there is no need to check for NULL before calling clk_prepare_enable() or its counter part. Rename "GEM CMA" helpers to "GEM DMA" helpers - considering the hierarchy of APIs (mm/cma -> dma -> gem dma) calling them "GEM DMA" seems to be more applicable. Besides that, commit e57924d4ae80 ("drm/doc: Task to rename CMA helpers") requests to rename the CMA helpers and implies that people seem to be confused about the naming. Also drivers/gpu/drm/Makefile was fixed up manually after renaming drm_gem_cma_helper.c to drm_gem_dma_helper.c. This patch is compile-time tested building a x86_64 kernel with `make allyesconfig && make drivers/gpu/drm`. 2022-05-05drm: mxsfb: Implement LCDIF scanout CRC32 supportMarek Vasut
The LCDIF controller as present in i.MX28/i.MX6SX/i.MX8M Mini/Nano has CRC_STAT register, which contains CRC32 of the frame as it was clocked out of the DPI interface of the LCDIF. This is most likely meant as a functional safety feature. Unfortunately, there is zero documentation on how the CRC32 is calculated, there is no documentation of the polynomial, the init value, nor on which data is the checksum applied. By applying brute-force on 8 pixel / 2 line frame, which is the minimum size LCDIF would work with, it turns out the polynomial is CRC32_POLY_LE 0xedb88320 , init value is 0xffffffff , the input data are bitrev32() of the entire frame and the resulting CRC has to be also bitrev32()ed. Doing this calculation in kernel for each frame is unrealistic due to the CPU demand, so attach the CRC collected from hardware to a frame instead. The DRM subsystem already has an interface for this purpose and the CRC can be accessed e.g. via debugfs: " $ echo auto > /sys/kernel/debug/dri/1/crtc-0/crc/control $ cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/1/crtc-0/crc/data 0x0000408c 0xa4e5cdd8 0x0000408d 0x72f537b4 " The per-frame CRC can be used by userspace e.g. during automated testing, to verify that whatever buffer was sent to be scanned out was actually scanned out of the LCDIF correctly. 2021-10-21drm: mxsfb: Fix NULL pointer dereference crash on unloadMarek Vasut
The mxsfb->crtc.funcs may already be NULL when unloading the driver, in which case calling mxsfb_irq_disable() via drm_irq_uninstall() from mxsfb_unload() leads to NULL pointer dereference. Since all we care about is masking the IRQ and mxsfb->base is still valid, just use that to clear and mask the IRQ. Drop the DRM IRQ midlayer in favor of Linux IRQ interfaces. DRM's IRQ helpers are mostly useful for UMS drivers. Modern KMS drivers don't benefit from using it. DRM IRQ callbacks are now being called directly or inlined. Calls to platform_get_irq() can fail with a negative errno code. Abort initialization in this case. The DRM IRQ midlayer does not handle this case correctly. 2021-07-27drm: mxsfb: Increase number of outstanding requests on V4 and newer HWMarek Vasut
In case the DRAM is under high load, the MXSFB FIFO might underflow and that causes visible artifacts. This could be triggered on i.MX8MM using e.g. "$ memtester 128M" on a device with 1920x1080 panel. The first "Stuck Address" test of the memtester will completely corrupt the image on the panel and leave the MXSFB FIFO in odd state. To avoid this underflow, increase number of outstanding requests to DRAM from 2 to 16, which is the maximum. This mitigates the issue and it can no longer be triggered. It can take multiple iterations until all components for an attached DSI bridge are up leading to several: [ 3.796425] mxsfb 30320000.lcd-controller: Cannot connect bridge: -517 [ 3.816952] mxsfb 30320000.lcd-controller: [drm:mxsfb_probe [mxsfb]] *ERROR* failed to attach bridge: -517 Silence this by checking for -EPROBE_DEFER and using dev_err_probe() so we set a deferred reason in case a dependency fails to probe (which quickly happens on small config/DT changes due to the rather long probe chain which can include bridges, phys, panels, backights, leds, etc.). This also removes the only DRM_DEV_ERROR() usage, the rest of the driver uses dev_err(). Subsequent patch will address this. - nouveau, because DRIVER_ATOMIC uapi is still not the default on the platforms where it's supported (i.e. again driver_feature mangling) - vc4, again because of driver_feature mangling - qxl, because the ioctl table is somewhere else and moving that is maybe a bit too much, hence the num_ioctls assignment prevents a const driver structure. - arcpgu, because that is stuck behind a pending tiny-fication series from me. - legacy drivers, because legacy requires non-const drm_driver. Note that for armada I also went ahead and made the ioctl array const. 2020-09-16drm: mxsfb: check framebuffer pitchStefan Agner
The lcdif IP does not support a framebuffer pitch (stride) other than framebuffer width. Check for equality and reject the framebuffer otherwise. This prevents a distorted picture when using 640x800 and running the Mesa graphics stack. Mesa tries to use a cache aligned stride, which leads at that particular resolution to width != stride. Currently Mesa has no fallback behavior, but rejecting this configuration allows userspace to handle the issue correctly. 2020-07-28drm: mxsfb: Don't touch AXI clock in IRQ contextLaurent Pinchart
The driver attempts agressive power management by enabling and disabling the AXI clock around register accesses. This results in attempts to enable and disable the clock in the IRQ handler, which is a no-go as preparing or unpreparing the clock may sleep. On the other hand, the driver enables the AXI clock when enabling the CRTC and keeps it enabled until the CRTC is disabled. This is correct, and renders the power management attempt pointless, as interrupts are not supposed to occur when the CRTC is off. The same reasoning can be applied to the CRTC .enable_vblank() and .disable_vblank() that are not supposed to be called when the CRTC off and thus don't require manual handling of the AXI clock. Furthermore, vblank handling is never enabled, which results in the vblank enable and disable handlers never being called. To fix this, remove the manual clock handling in the IRQ, the CRTC .enable_vblank() and .disable_vblank() handlers and the plane .atomic_update() handler. We however need to handle the clock manually in mxsfb_irq_disable() as is calls .disable_vblank() manually and is used both at probe and remove time. The clock disabling is also moved to the last step of the mxsfb_crtc_atomic_disable() function, to prepare for enabling vblank handling. 2020-07-28drm: mxsfb: Use drm_panel_bridgeLaurent Pinchart
Replace the manual connector implementation based on drm_panel with the drm_panel_bridge helper. This simplifies the mxsfb driver by removing connector-related code, and standardizing all pipeline control operations on bridges. A hack is needed to get hold of the connector, as that's our only source of bus flags and formats for now. As soon as the bridge API provides us with that information this can be fixed. To make sure I actually achieved the goal here I went through all drivers. And indeed, all atomic drivers are now free of drm_crtc_helper.h includes. v2: Make it compile. There was so much compile fail on arm drivers that I figured I'll better not include any of the acks on v1. v3: Massive rebase because i915 has lost a lot of drmP.h includes, but not all: Through drm_crtc_helper.h > drm_modeset_helper.h -> drmP.h there was still one, which this patch largely removes. Which means rolling out lots more includes all over. The CMA helper is already using the drm_fb_helper_generic_probe part of the generic fbdev emulation. This patch makes full use of the generic fbdev emulation by using its drm_client callbacks. This means that drm_mode_config_funcs->output_poll_changed and drm_driver->lastclose are now handled by the emulation code. Additionally fbdev unregister happens automatically on drm_dev_unregister(). The drm_fbdev_generic_setup() call is put after drm_dev_register() in the driver. This is done to highlight the fact that fbdev emulation is an internal client that makes use of the driver, it is not part of the driver as such. If fbdev setup fails, an error is printed, but the driver succeeds probing. The lcdif block is only powered on when display is active so plane updates when not enabled are not valid. Writing to an unpowered IP block is mostly ignored but can trigger bus errors on some chips. Prevent this situation by switching to drm_atomic_helper_commit_tail_rpm and having the drm core ensure atomic_plane_update is only called while the crtc is active. This avoids having to keep track of "enabled" bits inside the mxsfb driver. This also requires handling the vblank event for disable from mxsfb_pipe_disable.
