2025-07-14drm/bridge: Pass down connector to drm bridge detect hookAndy Yan
In some application scenarios, we hope to get the corresponding connector when the bridge's detect hook is invoked. In most cases, we can get the connector by drm_atomic_get_connector_for_encoder if the encoder attached to the bridge is enabled, however there will still be some scenarios where the detect hook of the bridge is called but the corresponding encoder has not been enabled yet. For instance, this occurs when the device is hot plug in for the first time. Since the call to bridge's detect is initiated by the connector, passing down the corresponding connector directly will make things simpler. 2025-05-23drm: convert many bridge drivers from devm_kzalloc() to ↵Luca Ceresoli
devm_drm_bridge_alloc() API devm_drm_bridge_alloc() is the new API to be used for allocating (and partially initializing) a private driver struct embedding a struct drm_bridge. For many drivers having a simple code flow in the probe function, this commit does a mass conversion automatically with the following semantic patch. The changes have been reviewed manually for correctness as well as to find any false positives. The patch has been applied with the explicit exclusion of bridge/panel.c, handled by a separate patch. After applying the semantic patch, manually fixed these issues: - 4 drivers need ERR_CAST() instead of PTR_ERR() as the function calling devm_drm_bridge_alloc() returns a pointer - re-added empty lines and comments that the script had removed but that should stay @@ type T; identifier C; identifier BR; expression DEV; expression FUNCS; @@ -T *C; +T *C; ... drm_dp_dpcd_read_link_status() follows the "return error code or number of bytes read" protocol, with the code returning less bytes than requested in case of some errors. However most of the drivers interpreted that as "return error code in case of any error". Switch drm_dp_dpcd_read_link_status() to drm_dp_dpcd_read_data() and make it follow that protocol too. 2025-03-20drm/bridge: Add encoder parameter to drm_bridge_funcs.attachMaxime Ripard
The drm_bridge structure contains an encoder pointer that is widely used by bridge drivers. This pattern is largely documented as deprecated in other KMS entities for atomic drivers. However, one of the main use of that pointer is done in attach to just call drm_bridge_attach on the next bridge to add it to the bridge list. While this dereferences the bridge->encoder pointer, it's effectively the same encoder the bridge was being attached to. We can make it more explicit by adding the encoder the bridge is attached to to the list of attach parameters. This also removes the need to dereference bridge->encoder in most drivers. 2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. No more unnecessary conversion noise. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2023-11-21drm/bridge: cdns-mhdp8546: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. 2023-07-21drm: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. 2022-09-01gpu/drm/bridge/cadence: avoid flush_scheduled_work() usageTetsuo Handa
Like commit c4f135d643823a86 ("workqueue: Wrap flush_workqueue() using a macro") says, flush_scheduled_work() is dangerous and will be forbidden. We are on the way for removing all flush_scheduled_work() callers from the kernel, and this patch is for removing flush_scheduled_work() call from cadence driver. Since cdns-mhdp8546 driver uses 4 works mhdp->modeset_retry_work mhdp->hpd_work mhdp->hdcp.check_work mhdp->hdcp.prop_work I assume that flush_scheduled_work() in cdns_mhdp_remove() needs to wait for only these 4 works. Since mhdp->modeset_retry_work already uses cancel_work_sync(), I assume that flush_scheduled_work() needs to wait for only 3 works. But I came to wonder whether mhdp->hdcp.check_work should be flushed or cancelled. While flush_scheduled_work() waits for completion of works which were already queued to system_wq, mhdp->hdcp.check_work is a delayed work. That is, this work won't be queued to system_wq unless timeout expires. Current code will wait for mhdp->hdcp.check_work only if timeout already expired. If timeout is not expired yet, flush_scheduled_work() will fail to cancel mhdp->hdcp.check_work, and cdns_mhdp_hdcp_check_work() which is triggered by mhdp->hdcp.check_work will schedule hdcp->check_work, which is too late for flush_scheduled_work() to wait for completion of cdns_mhdp_hdcp_prop_work(). But since I couldn't get comments on how do we want to handle this race window [1], this patch chose "do nothing" for mhdp->hdcp.check_work and mhdp->hdcp.prop_work. That is, I assume that flush_scheduled_work() in cdns_mhdp_remove() needs to wait for only mhdp->hpd_work work. 2021-04-27drm/dp: Add backpointer to drm_device in drm_dp_auxLyude Paul
This is something that we've wanted for a while now: the ability to actually look up the respective drm_device for a given drm_dp_aux struct. This will also allow us to transition over to using the drm_dbg_*() helpers for debug message printing, as we'll finally have a drm_device to reference for doing so. Note that there is one limitation with this - because some DP AUX adapters exist as platform devices which are initialized independently of their respective DRM devices, one cannot rely on drm_dp_aux->drm_dev to always be non-NULL until drm_dp_aux_register() has been called. We make sure to point this out in the documentation for struct drm_dp_aux. v3: * Add WARN_ON_ONCE() to drm_dp_aux_register() if drm_dev isn't filled out Signed-off-by: Lyude Paul <lyude@redhat.com> Acked-by: Thierry Reding <treding@nvidia.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210423184309.207645-4-lyude@redhat.com Reviewed-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com>

Add a new DRM bridge driver for Cadence MHDP8546 DPTX IP used in TI J721E SoC. MHDP DPTX IP is the component that complies with VESA DisplayPort (DP) and embedded Display Port (eDP) standards. It integrates uCPU running the embedded Firmware (FW) interfaced over APB interface. Basically, it takes a DPI stream as input and outputs it encoded in DP format. Currently, it supports only SST mode.
