7 daystpm: Check for completion after timeoutJarkko Sakkinen
The current implementation of timeout detection works in the following way: 1. Read completion status. If completed, return the data 2. Sleep for some time (usleep_range) 3. Check for timeout using current jiffies value. Return an error if timed out 4. Goto 1 usleep_range doesn't guarantee it's always going to wake up strictly in (min, max) range, so such a situation is possible: 1. Driver reads completion status. No completion yet 2. Process sleeps indefinitely. In the meantime, TPM responds 3. We check for timeout without checking for the completion again. Result is lost. Such a situation also happens for the guest VMs: if vCPU goes to sleep and doesn't get scheduled for some time, the guest TPM driver will timeout instantly after waking up without checking for the completion (which may already be in place). Perform the completion check once again after exiting the busy loop in order to give the device the last chance to send us some data. Since now we check for completion in two places, extract this check into a separate function. 7 daystpm: support devices with synchronous send()Stefano Garzarella
Some devices do not support interrupts and provide a single synchronous operation to send the command and receive the response on the same buffer. Currently, these types of drivers must use an internal buffer where they temporarily store the response between .send() and .recv() calls. Introduce a new flag (TPM_CHIP_FLAG_SYNC) to support synchronous send(). If that flag is set by the driver, tpm_try_transmit() will use the send() callback to send the command and receive the response on the same buffer synchronously. In that case send() return the number of bytes of the response on success, or -errno on failure. 7 daystpm: add bufsiz parameter in the .send callbackStefano Garzarella
Add a new `bufsiz` parameter to the `.send` callback in `tpm_class_ops`. This parameter will allow drivers to differentiate between the actual command length to send and the total buffer size. Currently `bufsiz` is not used, but it will be used to implement devices with synchronous send() to send the command and receive the response on the same buffer. Also rename the previous parameter `len` to `cmd_len` in the declaration to make it clear that it contains the length in bytes of the command stored in the buffer. The semantics don't change and it can be used as before by drivers. This is an optimization since the drivers could get it from the header, but let's avoid duplicating code. 2024-11-04tpm: Lock TPM chip in tpm_pm_suspend() firstJarkko Sakkinen
Setting TPM_CHIP_FLAG_SUSPENDED in the end of tpm_pm_suspend() can be racy according, as this leaves window for tpm_hwrng_read() to be called while the operation is in progress. The recent bug report gives also evidence of this behaviour. Aadress this by locking the TPM chip before checking any chip->flags both in tpm_pm_suspend() and tpm_hwrng_read(). Move TPM_CHIP_FLAG_SUSPENDED check inside tpm_get_random() so that it will be always checked only when the lock is reserved. 2024-05-09tpm: Store the length of the tpm_buf data separately.Jarkko Sakkinen
TPM2B buffers, or sized buffers, have a two byte header, which contains the length of the payload as a 16-bit big-endian number, without counting in the space taken by the header. This differs from encoding in the TPM header where the length includes also the bytes taken by the header. Unbound the length of a tpm_buf from the value stored to the TPM command header. A separate encoding and decoding step so that different buffer types can be supported, with variant header format and length encoding. 2023-03-17tpm: fix up the tpm_class shutdown_pre pointer when createdGreg Kroah-Hartman
Do not wait until long after the struct class has been created to set the shutdown_pre pointer for the tpm_class, assign it right away. This is the only in-kernel offender that tries to modify the device->class pointer contents after it has been assigned to a device, so fix that up by doing the function pointer assignment before it is matched with the device. Because of this, the patch should go through the driver core tree to allow later changes to struct device to be possible. TPM 1 is sometimes broken across system suspends, due to races or locking issues or something else that haven't been diagnosed or fixed yet, most likely having to do with concurrent reads from the TPM's hardware random number generator driver. These issues prevent the system from actually suspending, with errors like: tpm tpm0: A TPM error (28) occurred continue selftest ... tpm tpm0: A TPM error (28) occurred attempting get random ... tpm tpm0: Error (28) sending savestate before suspend tpm_tis 00:08: PM: __pnp_bus_suspend(): tpm_pm_suspend+0x0/0x80 returns 28 tpm_tis 00:08: PM: dpm_run_callback(): pnp_bus_suspend+0x0/0x10 returns 28 tpm_tis 00:08: PM: failed to suspend: error 28 PM: Some devices failed to suspend, or early wake event detected This issue was partially fixed by 23393c646142 ("char: tpm: Protect tpm_pm_suspend with locks"), in a last minute 6.1 commit that Linus took directly because the TPM maintainers weren't available. However, it seems like this just addresses the most common cases of the bug, rather than addressing it entirely. So there are more things to fix still, apparently. In lieu of actually fixing the underlying bug, just allow system suspend to continue, so that laptops still go to sleep fine. Later, this can be reverted when the real bug is fixed. 2019-11-12tpm: Add a flag to indicate TPM power is managed by firmwareStephen Boyd
On some platforms, the TPM power is managed by firmware and therefore we don't need to stop the TPM on suspend when going to a light version of suspend such as S0ix ("freeze" suspend state). Add a chip flag, TPM_CHIP_FLAG_FIRMWARE_POWER_MANAGED, to indicate this so that certain platforms can probe for the usage of this light suspend and avoid touching the TPM state across suspend/resume. 2019-09-25tpm: Wrap the buffer from the caller to tpm_buf in tpm_send()Jarkko Sakkinen
tpm_send() does not give anymore the result back to the caller. This would require another memcpy(), which kind of tells that the whole approach is somewhat broken. Instead, as Mimi suggested, this commit just wraps the data to the tpm_buf, and thus the result will not go to the garbage. Obviously this assumes from the caller that it passes large enough buffer, which makes the whole API somewhat broken because it could be different size than @buflen but since trusted keys is the only module using this API right now I think that this fix is sufficient for the moment. In the near future the plan is to replace the parameters with a tpm_buf created by the caller. Commit 0b6cf6b97b7e ("tpm: pass an array of tpm_extend_digest structures to tpm_pcr_extend()") modifies tpm_pcr_extend() to accept a digest for each PCR bank. After modification, tpm_pcr_extend() expects that digests are passed in the same order as the algorithms set in chip->allocated_banks. 2019-02-13tpm: pass an array of tpm_extend_digest structures to tpm_pcr_extend()Roberto Sassu
Currently, tpm_pcr_extend() accepts as an input only a SHA1 digest. This patch replaces the hash parameter of tpm_pcr_extend() with an array of tpm_digest structures, so that the caller can provide a digest for each PCR bank currently allocated in the TPM. tpm_pcr_extend() will not extend banks for which no digest was provided, as it happened before this patch, but instead it requires that callers provide the full set of digests. Since the number of digests will always be chip->nr_allocated_banks, the count parameter has been removed. Due to the API change, ima_pcr_extend() and pcrlock() have been modified. Since the number of allocated banks is not known in advance, the memory for the digests must be dynamically allocated. To avoid performance degradation and to avoid that a PCR extend is not done due to lack of memory, the array of tpm_digest structures is allocated by the users of the TPM driver at initialization time. 2019-02-13tpm: retrieve digest size of unknown algorithms with PCR readRoberto Sassu
Currently, the TPM driver retrieves the digest size from a table mapping TPM algorithms identifiers to identifiers defined by the crypto subsystem. If the algorithm is not defined by the latter, the digest size can be retrieved from the output of the PCR read command. The patch modifies the definition of tpm_pcr_read() and tpm2_pcr_read() to pass the desired hash algorithm and obtain the digest size at TPM startup. Algorithms and corresponding digest sizes are stored in the new structure tpm_bank_info, member of tpm_chip, so that the information can be used by other kernel subsystems. tpm_bank_info contains: the TPM algorithm identifier, necessary to generate the event log as defined by Trusted Computing Group (TCG); the digest size, to pad/truncate a digest calculated with a different algorithm; the crypto subsystem identifier, to calculate the digest of event data. This patch also protects against data corruption that could happen in the bus, by checking that the digest size returned by the TPM during a PCR read matches the size of the algorithm passed to tpm2_pcr_read(). For the initial PCR read, when digest sizes are not yet available, this patch ensures that the amount of data copied from the output returned by the TPM does not exceed the size of the array data are copied to. 2019-02-13tpm: dynamically allocate the allocated_banks arrayRoberto Sassu
This patch renames active_banks (member of tpm_chip) to allocated_banks, stores the number of allocated PCR banks in nr_allocated_banks (new member of tpm_chip), and replaces the static array with a pointer to a dynamically allocated array. tpm2_get_pcr_allocation() determines if a PCR bank is allocated by checking the mask in the TPML_PCR_SELECTION structure returned by the TPM for TPM2_Get_Capability(). If a bank is not allocated, the TPM returns that bank in TPML_PCR_SELECTION, with all bits in the mask set to zero. In this case, the bank is not included in chip->allocated_banks, to avoid that TPM driver users unnecessarily calculate a digest for that bank. One PCR bank with algorithm set to SHA1 is always allocated for TPM 1.x. As a consequence of the introduction of nr_allocated_banks, tpm_pcr_extend() does not check anymore if the algorithm stored in tpm_chip is equal to zero.
