2025-04-11net: Retire DCCP socket.Kuniyuki Iwashima
DCCP was orphaned in 2021 by commit 054c4610bd05 ("MAINTAINERS: dccp: move Gerrit Renker to CREDITS"), which noted that the last maintainer had been inactive for five years. In recent years, it has become a playground for syzbot, and most changes to DCCP have been odd bug fixes triggered by syzbot. Apart from that, the only changes have been driven by treewide or networking API updates or adjustments related to TCP. Thus, in 2023, we announced we would remove DCCP in 2025 via commit b144fcaf46d4 ("dccp: Print deprecation notice."). Since then, only one individual has contacted the netdev mailing list. [0] There is ongoing research for Multipath DCCP. The repository is hosted on GitHub [1], and development is not taking place through the upstream community. While the repository is published under the GPLv2 license, the scheduling part remains proprietary, with a LICENSE file [2] stating: "This is not Open Source software." The researcher mentioned a plan to address the licensing issue, upstream the patches, and step up as a maintainer, but there has been no further communication since then. Maintaining DCCP for a decade without any real users has become a burden. Therefore, it's time to remove it. Removing DCCP will also provide significant benefits to TCP. It allows us to freely reorganize the layout of struct inet_connection_sock, which is currently shared with DCCP, and optimize it to reduce the number of cachelines accessed in the TCP fast path. Note that we keep DCCP netfilter modules as requested. 2025-01-13Documentation: bug-hunting.rst: remove odd contact informationGreg Kroah-Hartman
At the bottom of the bug-hunting.rst file there is a "signature" which doesn't seem to make much sense. It seems to predate git, and perhaps was from an earlier bug report that got copied into the document, but now makes no sense so remove it. 2024-08-26Documentation: admin-guide: direct people to bug trackers, if specifiedJani Nikula
Update bug reporting info in bug-hunting.rst to direct people to driver/subsystem bug trackers, if explicitly specified with the MAINTAINERS "B:" entry. Use the new get_maintainer.pl --bug option to print the info. 2020-05-25Documentation: admin-guide: update bug-hunting.rstRandy Dunlap
Update Documentation/admin-guide/bug-hunting.rst: - add a small section on "Modules linked in" and their possible flags; - delete all references to ksymoops since it is no longer applicable; - fix spello, grammar, and punctuation; - note that get_maintainers.pl only provides recent patchers if it is run inside a git tree; - add mention of scripts/decode_stacktrace.sh; Signed-off-by: Randy Dunlap <rdunlap@infradead.org> Cc: greg@wind.rmcc.com Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/c629a9ef-3867-c3d1-f6c9-2c3b0e4ac68a@infradead.org Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net>
2019-07-15docs: admin-guide: add kdump documentation into itMauro Carvalho Chehab
The Kdump documentation describes procedures with admins use in order to solve issues on their systems. Signed-off-by: Mauro Carvalho Chehab <mchehab+samsung@kernel.org>
2019-06-14docs: kdump: convert docs to ReST and rename to *.rstMauro Carvalho Chehab
Convert kdump documentation to ReST and add it to the user faced manual, as the documents are mainly focused on sysadmins that would be enabling kdump. Note: the vmcoreinfo.rst has one very long title on one of its sub-sections: PG_lru|PG_private|PG_swapcache|PG_swapbacked|PG_slab|PG_hwpoision|PG_head_mask|PAGE_BUDDY_MAPCOUNT_VALUE(~PG_buddy)|PAGE_OFFLINE_MAPCOUNT_VALUE(~PG_offline) I opted to break this one, into two entries with the same content, in order to make it easier to display after being parsed in html and PDF. The conversion is actually: - add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs; - fix tables markups; - add some lists markups; - mark literal blocks; - adjust title markups. At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings. 2017-10-31bug-hunting.rst: Fix an example and a typo in a Sphinx tagChristophe JAILLET
- Use the same file name in the explanation and in the example (conex.c vs sonixj.c) - Add a missing ':' in a :ref: tag which leads to incorrect Shpinx output - Add some missing ',' and ';' Signed-off-by: Christophe JAILLET <christophe.jaillet@wanadoo.fr> Signed-off-by: Jonathan Corbet <corbet@lwn.net>
2016-11-07admin-guide: merge oops-tracing with bug-huntingMauro Carvalho Chehab
Now that oops-tracing.rst has only information about stack dumps found on OOPS, and bug-hunting.rst has only information about how to identify the source code line associated with a stack dump, let's merge them and improve the information inside it.
