2025-06-19tools/power turbostat: Fix AMD package-energy reportingGautham R. Shenoy
[ Upstream commit adb49732c8c63665dd3476e8e6b7c67a0f851245 ] commit 05a2f07db888 ("tools/power turbostat: read RAPL counters via perf") that adds support to read RAPL counters via perf defines the notion of a RAPL domain_id which is set to physical_core_id on platforms which support per_core_rapl counters (Eg: AMD processors Family 17h onwards) and is set to the physical_package_id on all the other platforms. However, the physical_core_id is only unique within a package and on platforms with multiple packages more than one core can have the same physical_core_id and thus the same domain_id. (For eg, the first cores of each package have the physical_core_id = 0). This results in all these cores with the same physical_core_id using the same entry in the rapl_counter_info_perdomain[]. Since rapl_perf_init() skips the perf-initialization for cores whose domain_ids have already been visited, cores that have the same physical_core_id always read the perf file corresponding to the physical_core_id of the first package and thus the package-energy is incorrectly reported to be the same value for different packages. Note: This issue only arises when RAPL counters are read via perf and not when they are read via MSRs since in the latter case the MSRs are read separately on each core. Fix this issue by associating each CPU with rapl_core_id which is unique across all the packages in the system. 2025-05-29tools/power turbostat: Clustered Uncore MHz counters should honor show/hide ↵Len Brown
options [ Upstream commit 1c7c7388e6c31f46b26a884d80b45efbad8237b2 ] The clustered uncore frequency counters, UMHz*.* should honor the --show and --hide options. All non-specified counters should be implicityly hidden. But when --show was used, UMHz*.* showed up anyway: $ sudo turbostat -q -S --show Busy% Busy%  UMHz0.0  UMHz1.0  UMHz2.0  UMHz3.0  UMHz4.0 Indeed, there was no string that can be used to explicitly show or hide clustered uncore counters. Even through they are dynamically probed and added, group the clustered UMHz*.* counters with the legacy built-in-counter "UncMHz" for show/hide. turbostat --show Busy% does not show UMHz*.*. turbostat --show UncMHz shows either UncMHz or UMHz*.*, if present turbostat --hide UncMHz hides either UncMHz or UMHz*.*, if present Reported-by: Artem Bityutskiy <artem.bityutskiy@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com> Tested-by: Artem Bityutskiy <artem.bityutskiy@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Sasha Levin <sashal@kernel.org>
2025-04-10tools/power turbostat: report CoreThr per measurement intervalLen Brown
[ Upstream commit f729775f79a9c942c6c82ed6b44bd030afe10423 ] The CoreThr column displays total thermal throttling events since boot time. Change it to report events during the measurement interval. This is more useful for showing a user the current conditions. Total events since boot time are still available to the user via /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/thermal_throttle/* Document CoreThr on turbostat.8 Fixes: eae97e053fe30 ("turbostat: Support thermal throttle count print") Reported-by: Arjan van de Ven <arjan@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com> Cc: Chen Yu <yu.c.chen@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Sasha Levin <sashal@kernel.org>
2025-02-08tools/power turbostat: Fix forked child affinity regressionLen Brown
[ Upstream commit b32c36975da48afc9089f8b61f7b2dcc40e479d2 ] In "one-shot" mode, turbostat 1. takes a counter snapshot 2. forks and waits for a child 3. takes the end counter snapshot and prints the result. But turbostat counter snapshots currently use affinity to travel around the system so that counter reads are "local", and this affinity must be cleared between #1 and #2 above. The offending commit removed that reset that allowed the child to run on cpu_present_set. Fix that issue, and improve upon the original by using cpu_possible_set for the child. This allows the child to also run on CPUs that hotplug online during its runtime. 2025-02-08tools/power turbostat: Fix PMT mmaped file size roundingPatryk Wlazlyn
[ Upstream commit 2f60f03934a50bc1fb69bb4f47a25cddd6807b0b ] This (the old code) is just not how you round up to a page size. Noticed on a recent Intel platform. Previous ones must have been reporting sizes already aligned to a page and so the bug was missed when testing. 2025-02-08tools/power turbostat: Allow using cpu device in perf counters on hybrid ↵Patryk Wlazlyn
platforms [ Upstream commit ae2cdf8d92ffc326104524a1f9da4cf75b6ea996 ] Intel hybrid platforms expose different perf devices for P and E cores. Instead of one, "/sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu" device, there are "/sys/bus/event_source/devices/{cpu_core,cpu_atom}". This, however makes it more complicated for the user, because most of the counters are available on both and had to be handled manually. This patch allows users to use "virtual" cpu device that is seemingly translated to cpu_core and cpu_atom perf devices, depending on the type of a CPU we are opening the counter for. 2024-12-05tools/power turbostat: Fix child's argument forwardingPatryk Wlazlyn
[ Upstream commit 1da0daf746342dfdc114e4dc8fbf3ece28666d4f ] Add '+' to optstring when early scanning for --no-msr and --no-perf. It causes option processing to stop as soon as a nonoption argument is encountered, effectively skipping child's arguments. 2024-12-05tools/power turbostat: Fix trailing '\n' parsingZhang Rui
[ Upstream commit fed8511cc8996989178823052dc0200643e1389a ] parse_cpu_string() parses the string input either from command line or from /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset.cpus.effective to get a list of CPUs that turbostat can run with. The cpu string returned by /sys/fs/cgroup/cpuset.cpus.effective contains a trailing '\n', but strtoul() fails to treat this as an error. That says, for the code below val = ("\n", NULL, 10); val returns 0, and errno is also not set. As a result, CPU0 is erroneously considered as allowed CPU and this causes failures when turbostat tries to run on CPU0. get_counters: Could not migrate to CPU 0 ... turbostat: re-initialized with num_cpus 8, allowed_cpus 5 get_counters: Could not migrate to CPU 0 Add a check to return immediately if '\n' or '\0' is detected. 2024-07-26tools/power turbostat: Add MTL's PMT DC6 builtin counterPatryk Wlazlyn
Provide a definition for metadata that allows reading DC6 residency counter via PMT and exposes it as a builtin counter. Note that this residency counter is updated and read via entirely different mechanisms vs the MSR-based residency counters. On MTL processors, there are times when Die%c6 will report above 100%. 2024-07-26tools/power turbostat: Add early support for PMT countersPatryk Wlazlyn
Allows users to read Intel PMT (Platform Monitoring Technology) counters, providing interface similar to one used to add MSR and perf counters. Because PMT is exposed as a raw MMIO range, without metadata, user has to supply the necessary information to find and correctly display the requested counter. 2024-07-07tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: Set TRL MSR in 100 MHz unitsSrinivas Pandruvada
When SST-TF is disabled in auto mode, the performance is getting limited. This is caused by wrong programming of Turbo Ratio Limit (TRL) MSR. 2024-06-27tools/power turbostat: Fix unc freq columns not showing with '-q' or '-l'Adam Hawley
Commit 78464d7681f7 ("tools/power turbostat: Add columns for clustered uncore frequency") introduced 'probe_intel_uncore_frequency_cluster()' in a way which prevents printing uncore frequency columns if either of the '-q' or '-l' options are used. Systems which do not have multiple uncore frequencies per package are unaffected by this regression. Fix the function so that uncore frequency columns are shown when either the '-l' or '-q' option is used by checking if 'quiet' is true after adding counters for the uncore frequency columns. 2024-06-27tools/power turbostat: option '-n' is ambiguousDavid Arcari
In some cases specifying the '-n' command line argument will cause turbostat to fail. For instance 'turbostat -n 1' works fine; however, 'turbostat -n 1 -d' will fail. This is the result of the first call to getopt_long_only() where "MP" is specified as the optstring. This can be easily fixed by changing the optstring from "MP" to "MPn:" to remove ambiguity between the arguments. tools/power turbostat: option '-n' is ambiguous; possibilities: '-num_iterations' '-no-msr' '-no-perf' Fixes: a0e86c90b83c ("tools/power turbostat: Add --no-perf option") Signed-off-by: David Arcari <darcari@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>

Reading the counters via perf can be done in bulk with a single syscall, making the counter values more accurate with respect to one another by minimizing the time gap between individual counter reads. 2024-05-15tools/power turbostat: Avoid possible memory corruption due to sparse ↵Patryk Wlazlyn
topology IDs Save the highest core and package id when parsing topology to allocate enough memory when get_rapl_counters() is called with a core or a package id as a domain. Note that RAPL domains are per-package on Intel, but per-core on AMD. Thus, the RAPL code effectively runs in different modes on those two product lines. 2024-05-15tools/power turbostat: Add columns for clustered uncore frequencyLen Brown
New machines have multiple uncore frequencies per package, visible in /sys/devices/system/cpu/intel_uncore_frequency/uncore##/ turbostat now samples these frequencies each measurement interval. For each package, turbostat now prints "UMHzX.Y" columns, where X = domain_id, and Y = fabric_cluster_id. The system summary for each UMHzX.Y column is the average value for across all of the packages in the system. Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2024-05-01tools/power turbostat: Enable non-privileged users to read sysfs countersPatryk Wlazlyn
A group of counters called "sysfs" displays software C-state request counts and resulting perceived C-state residency. They are not built-in counters that turbostat knows about ahead of time, rather they are discovered in sysfs when turbostat starts. Thus, they are added dynamically, using the same interface as user-added MSR counters. When turbostat enters "no-msr" mode, such as when running as a non-privileged user, it clears all added counters. Updating that to clear only actual MSR added counters allows regular users to see the sysfs counters. 2024-05-01tools/power turbostat: Enhance ARL/LNL supportZhang Rui
ARL/LNL don't have PC8, other than that, it behaves the same as CNL. Copy cnl_features for ARL/LNL, except that PC8 support is removed. Signed-off-by: Zhang Rui <rui.zhang@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Len Brown <len.brown@intel.com>
2024-04-29tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: v1.19 releaseSrinivas Pandruvada
This version addresses issues with: - Support of SST BF/TF support per level - Increase number of CPUs displayed - Present all TRL levels for turbo-freq - Fix display for unsupported levels - Support multiple dies - Increase die count - Change CPU display for non compute domain Signed-off-by: Srinivas Pandruvada <srinivas.pandruvada@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Hans de Goede <hdegoede@redhat.com>
2024-04-29tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: Display CPU as None for -1Srinivas Pandruvada
When there is no CPU in a power domain, display "None" instead of -1. Signed-off-by: Srinivas Pandruvada <srinivas.pandruvada@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Hans de Goede <hdegoede@redhat.com>
2024-04-29tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: SST BF/TF support per levelSrinivas Pandruvada
SST BF and TF can be enabled/disabled per level. So check the current level support from the mask of supported levels. This change from a single level to mask for info.sst_tf_support and info.sst_tf_support is indicated by API version change. Use as mask for API version above 2. In this way there is no change in behavior when running on older kernel with API version 2. Since the tool can support now API version 3, update the supported API version. 2024-04-29tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: Increase number of CPUs displayedSrinivas Pandruvada
Currently max 128 CPUs can be displayed in the enable CPU list. Double the range. Since the size is big for stack allocation, change to static. Here changing to static is fine as these functions are called in serial. Signed-off-by: Srinivas Pandruvada <srinivas.pandruvada@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Hans de Goede <hdegoede@redhat.com>
2024-04-29tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: Present all TRL levels for turbo-freqSrinivas Pandruvada
For turbo-freq feature, only 3 levels of frequencies are displayed even if platform support more. Present all levels based on the CPU model. Signed-off-by: Srinivas Pandruvada <srinivas.pandruvada@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Hans de Goede <hdegoede@redhat.com>
2024-04-29tools/power/x86/intel-speed-select: Fix display for unsupported levelsSrinivas Pandruvada
During call to "intel-speed-select turbo-freq info" some junk values are reported for unsupported levels. Initialize the structure fact_info with 0s, so that isst_fact_display_information() will skip "0" values in the frequency.
