2018-04-24resource: fix integer overflow at reallocationTakashi Iwai

We've got a bug report indicating a kernel panic at booting on an x86-32 system, and it turned out to be the invalid PCI resource assigned after reallocation. __find_resource() first aligns the resource start address and resets the end address with start+size-1 accordingly, then checks whether it's contained. Here the end address may overflow the integer, although resource_contains() still returns true because the function validates only start and end address. So this ends up with returning an invalid resource (start > end). There was already an attempt to cover such a problem in the commit 47ea91b4052d ("Resource: fix wrong resource window calculation"), but this case is an overseen one. This patch adds the validity check of the newly calculated resource for avoiding the integer overflow problem. 2018-04-13futex: Remove requirement for lock_page() in get_futex_key()Mel Gorman
commit 65d8fc777f6dcfee12785c057a6b57f679641c90 upstream. When dealing with key handling for shared futexes, we can drastically reduce the usage/need of the page lock. 1) For anonymous pages, the associated futex object is the mm_struct which does not require the page lock. 2) For inode based, keys, we can check under RCU read lock if the page mapping is still valid and take reference to the inode. This just leaves one rare race that requires the page lock in the slow path when examining the swapcache. Additionally realtime users currently have a problem with the page lock being contended for unbounded periods of time during futex operations. Task A get_futex_key() lock_page() ---> preempted Now any other task trying to lock that page will have to wait until task A gets scheduled back in, which is an unbound time. With this patch, we pretty much have a lockless futex_get_key(). Experiments show that this patch can boost/speedup the hashing of shared futexes with the perf futex benchmarks (which is good for measuring such change) by up to 45% when there are high (> 100) thread counts on a 60 core Westmere. Lower counts are pretty much in the noise range or less than 10%, but mid range can be seen at over 30% overall throughput (hash ops/sec). This makes anon-mem shared futexes much closer to its private counterpart. When first pid allocation fails, then next created process will have pid 2 and pid_ns_prepare_proc() won't be called. So, pid_namespace::proc_mnt will never be initialized (not to mention that there won't be a child reaper). In Documentation/trace/kprobetrace.txt, it says @SYM[+|-offs] : Fetch memory at SYM +|- offs (SYM should be a data symbol) However, the parser doesn't parse minus offset correctly, since commit 2fba0c8867af ("tracing/kprobes: Fix probe offset to be unsigned") drops minus ("-") offset support for kprobe probe address usage. This fixes the traceprobe_split_symbol_offset() to parse minus offset again with checking the offset range, and add a minus offset check in kprobe probe address usage. [ Upstream commit 382bd4de61827dbaaf5fb4fb7b1f4be4a86505e7 ] When requesting a shared irq with IRQF_TRIGGER_NONE then the irqaction flags get filled with the trigger type from the irq_data: if (!(new->flags & IRQF_TRIGGER_MASK)) new->flags |= irqd_get_trigger_type(&desc->irq_data); On the first setup_irq() the trigger type in irq_data is NONE when the above code executes, then the irq is started up for the first time and then the actual trigger type gets established, but that's too late to fix up new->flags. When then a second user of the irq requests the irq with IRQF_TRIGGER_NONE its irqaction's triggertype gets set to the actual trigger type and the following check fails: if (!((old->flags ^ new->flags) & IRQF_TRIGGER_MASK)) Resulting in the request_irq failing with -EBUSY even though both users requested the irq with IRQF_SHARED | IRQF_TRIGGER_NONE Fix this by comparing the new irqaction's trigger type to the trigger type stored in the irq_data which correctly reflects the actual trigger type being used for the irq. 2018-03-22braille-console: Fix value returned by _braille_console_setupSamuel Thibault
[ Upstream commit 2ed2b8621be2708c0f6d61fe9841e9ad8b9753f0 ] commit bbeddf52adc1 ("printk: move braille console support into separate braille.[ch] files") introduced _braille_console_setup() to outline the braille initialization code. There was however some confusion over the value it was supposed to return. commit 2cfe6c4ac7ee ("printk: Fix return of braille_register_console()") tried to fix it but failed to. This fixes and documents the returned value according to the use in printk.c: non-zero return means a parsing error, and thus this console configuration should be ignored. 2018-03-22timers, sched_clock: Update timeout for clock wrapDavid Engraf
[ Upstream commit 1b8955bc5ac575009835e371ae55e7f3af2197a9 ] The scheduler clock framework may not use the correct timeout for the clock wrap. This happens when a new clock driver calls sched_clock_register() after the kernel called sched_clock_postinit(). In this case the clock wrap timeout is too long thus sched_clock_poll() is called too late and the clock already wrapped. On my ARM system the scheduler was no longer scheduling any other task than the idle task because the sched_clock() wrapped. 2018-03-03hrtimer: Ensure POSIX compliance (relative CLOCK_REALTIME hrtimers)Anna-Maria Gleixner
commit 48d0c9becc7f3c66874c100c126459a9da0fdced upstream. The POSIX specification defines that relative CLOCK_REALTIME timers are not affected by clock modifications. Those timers have to use CLOCK_MONOTONIC to ensure POSIX compliance. The introduction of the additional HRTIMER_MODE_PINNED mode broke this requirement for pinned timers. There is no user space visible impact because user space timers are not using pinned mode, but for consistency reasons this needs to be fixed. Check whether the mode has the HRTIMER_MODE_REL bit set instead of comparing with HRTIMER_MODE_ABS. This reverts commit 92266d6ef60c ("async: simplify lowest_in_progress()") which was simply wrong: In the case where domain is NULL, we now use the wrong offsetof() in the list_first_entry macro, so we don't actually fetch the ->cookie value, but rather the eight bytes located sizeof(struct list_head) further into the struct async_entry. On 64 bit, that's the data member, while on 32 bit, that's a u64 built from func and data in some order. I think the bug happens to be harmless in practice: It obviously only affects callers which pass a NULL domain, and AFAICT the only such caller is async_synchronize_full() -> async_synchronize_full_domain(NULL) -> async_synchronize_cookie_domain(ASYNC_COOKIE_MAX, NULL) and the ASYNC_COOKIE_MAX means that in practice we end up waiting for the async_global_pending list to be empty - but it would break if somebody happened to pass (void*)-1 as the data element to async_schedule, and of course also if somebody ever does a async_synchronize_cookie_domain(, NULL) with a "finite" cookie value. Maybe the "harmless in practice" means this isn't -stable material. But I'm not completely confident my quick git grep'ing is enough, and there might be affected code in one of the earlier kernels that has since been removed, so I'll leave the decision to the stable guys. 2018-02-16posix-timer: Properly check sigevent->sigev_notifyThomas Gleixner
commit cef31d9af908243421258f1df35a4a644604efbe upstream. timer_create() specifies via sigevent->sigev_notify the signal delivery for the new timer. The valid modes are SIGEV_NONE, SIGEV_SIGNAL, SIGEV_THREAD and (SIGEV_SIGNAL | SIGEV_THREAD_ID). The sanity check in good_sigevent() is only checking the valid combination for the SIGEV_THREAD_ID bit, i.e. SIGEV_SIGNAL, but if SIGEV_THREAD_ID is not set it accepts any random value. This has no real effects on the posix timer and signal delivery code, but it affects show_timer() which handles the output of /proc/$PID/timers. That function uses a string array to pretty print sigev_notify. The access to that array has no bound checks, so random sigev_notify cause access beyond the array bounds. Add proper checks for the valid notify modes and remove the SIGEV_THREAD_ID masking from various code pathes as SIGEV_NONE can never be set in combination with SIGEV_THREAD_ID. The hrtimer interrupt code contains a hang detection and mitigation mechanism, which prevents that a long delayed hrtimer interrupt causes a continous retriggering of interrupts which prevent the system from making progress. If a hang is detected then the timer hardware is programmed with a certain delay into the future and a flag is set in the hrtimer cpu base which prevents newly enqueued timers from reprogramming the timer hardware prior to the chosen delay. The subsequent hrtimer interrupt after the delay clears the flag and resumes normal operation. If such a hang happens in the last hrtimer interrupt before a CPU is unplugged then the hang_detected flag is set and stays that way when the CPU is plugged in again. At that point the timer hardware is not armed and it cannot be armed because the hang_detected flag is still active, so nothing clears that flag. As a consequence the CPU does not receive hrtimer interrupts and no timers expire on that CPU which results in RCU stalls and other malfunctions. Clear the flag along with some other less critical members of the hrtimer cpu base to ensure starting from a clean state when a CPU is plugged in. Thanks to Paul, Sebastian and Anna-Maria for their help to get down to the root cause of that hard to reproduce heisenbug. Once understood it's trivial and certainly justifies a brown paperbag. Enabling gcov is counterproductive to compile testing: it significantly increases the kernel image size, compile time, and it produces lots of false positive "may be used uninitialized" warnings as the result of missed optimizations. This is in line with how UBSAN_SANITIZE_ALL and PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES work, both of which have similar problems. With an ARM allmodconfig kernel, I see the build time drop from 283 minutes CPU time to 225 minutes, and the vmlinux size drops from 43MB to 26MB. Di Shen reported a race between two concurrent sys_perf_event_open() calls where both try and move the same pre-existing software group into a hardware context. The problem is exactly that described in commit: f63a8daa5812 ("perf: Fix event->ctx locking") ... where, while we wait for a ctx->mutex acquisition, the event->ctx relation can have changed under us. That very same commit failed to recognise sys_perf_event_context() as an external access vector to the events and thereby didn't apply the established locking rules correctly. So while one sys_perf_event_open() call is stuck waiting on mutex_lock_double(), the other (which owns said locks) moves the group about. So by the time the former sys_perf_event_open() acquires the locks, the context we've acquired is stale (and possibly dead). Apply the established locking rules as per perf_event_ctx_lock_nested() to the mutex_lock_double() for the 'move_group' case. This obviously means we need to validate state after we acquire the locks. If nothing else, fatal_signal_pending() should always imply that the whole thread group (except ->group_exit_task if it is not NULL) is killed, this check breaks the rule. After the previous changes we can rely on sig_task_ignored(); sig_fatal(sig) && SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE can only be true if we actually want to kill this task and sig == SIGKILL OR it is traced and debugger can intercept the signal. The comment in sig_ignored() says "Tracers may want to know about even ignored signals" but SIGKILL can not be reported to debugger and it is just wrong to return 0 in this case: SIGKILL should only kill the SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE task if it comes from the parent ns. Change sig_ignored() to ignore ->ptrace if sig == SIGKILL and rely on sig_task_ignored(). SISGTOP coming from within the namespace is not really right too but at least debugger can intercept it, and we can't drop it here because this will break "gdb -p 1": ptrace_attach() won't work. Perhaps we will add another ->ptrace check later, we will see. As Tsukada explains, the time_is_before_jiffies(acct->needcheck) check is very wrong, we need time_is_after_jiffies() to make sys_acct() work. Ignoring the overflows, the code should "goto out" if needcheck > jiffies, while currently it checks "needcheck < jiffies" and thus in the likely case check_free_space() does nothing until jiffies overflow. In particular this means that sys_acct() is simply broken, acct_on() sets acct->needcheck = jiffies and expects that check_free_space() should set acct->active = 1 after the free-space check, but this won't happen if jiffies increments in between. This was broken by commit 32dc73086015 ("get rid of timer in kern/acct.c") in 2011, then another (correct) commit 795a2f22a8ea ("acct() should honour the limits from the very beginning") made the problem more visible. 2018-01-02ring-buffer: Mask out the info bits when returning buffer page lengthSteven Rostedt (VMware)
commit 45d8b80c2ac5d21cd1e2954431fb676bc2b1e099 upstream. Two info bits were added to the "commit" part of the ring buffer data page when returned to be consumed. This was to inform the user space readers that events have been missed, and that the count may be stored at the end of the page. What wasn't handled, was the splice code that actually called a function to return the length of the data in order to zero out the rest of the page before sending it up to user space. These data bits were returned with the length making the value negative, and that negative value was not checked. It was compared to PAGE_SIZE, and only used if the size was less than PAGE_SIZE. Luckily PAGE_SIZE is unsigned long which made the compare an unsigned compare, meaning the negative size value did not end up causing a large portion of memory to be randomly zeroed out. 2017-12-20sched/deadline: Use deadline instead of period when calculating overflowSteven Rostedt (VMware)

Instead of having the runtime equal to the deadline, I increased the deadline ten fold. Daniel's test case had: attr.sched_runtime = 2 * 1000 * 1000; /* 2 ms */ attr.sched_deadline = 2 * 1000 * 1000; /* 2 ms */ attr.sched_period = 2 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000; /* 2 s */ To make it more interesting, I changed it to: attr.sched_runtime = 2 * 1000 * 1000; /* 2 ms */ attr.sched_deadline = 20 * 1000 * 1000; /* 20 ms */ attr.sched_period = 2 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000; /* 2 s */ The results were rather surprising. The behavior that Daniel's patch was fixing came back. The task started using much more than .1% of the CPU. More like 20%. Looking into this I found that it was due to the dl_entity_overflow() constantly returning true. That's because it uses the relative period against relative runtime vs the absolute deadline against absolute runtime. runtime / (deadline - t) > dl_runtime / dl_period There's even a comment mentioning this, and saying that when relative deadline equals relative period, that the equation is the same as using deadline instead of period. That comment is backwards! What we really want is: runtime / (deadline - t) > dl_runtime / dl_deadline We care about if the runtime can make its deadline, not its period. And then we can say "when the deadline equals the period, the equation is the same as using dl_period instead of dl_deadline". After correcting this, now when the task gets enqueued, it can throttle correctly, and Daniel's fix to the throttling of sleeping deadline tasks works even when the runtime and deadline are not the same. Two issues were found on an IMX6 development board without an enabled RTC device(resulting in the boot time and monotonic time being initialized to 0). Issue 1:exportfs -a generate: "exportfs: /opt/nfs/arm does not support NFS export" Issue 2:cat /proc/stat: "btime 4294967236" The same issues can be reproduced on x86 after running the following code: int main(void) { struct timeval val; int ret; val.tv_sec = 0; val.tv_usec = 0; ret = settimeofday(&val, NULL); return 0; } Two issues are different symptoms of same problem: The reason is a positive wall_to_monotonic pushes boot time back to the time before Epoch, and getboottime will return negative value. In symptom 1: negative boot time cause get_expiry() to overflow time_t when input expire time is 2147483647, then cache_flush() always clears entries just added in ip_map_parse. In symptom 2: show_stat() uses "unsigned long" to print negative btime value returned by getboottime. This patch fix the problem by prohibiting time from being set to a value which would cause a negative boot time. As a result one can't set the CLOCK_REALTIME time prior to (1970 + system uptime). Handles IPI sync_sched_exp_handler resched_cpu returns while failing to try lock acquire rq->lock need_resched is not set o CPU5 calls rcu_idle_enter() and as need_resched is not set, goes to idle (schedule() is not called). o CPU 1 reports RCU stall. Given that resched_cpu() is now used only by RCU, this commit fixes the assumption by making resched_cpu() unconditional. Firstly, it increments GCOV_COUNTERS (to 10), which makes the data structure struct gcov_info compatible with GCC 5.1. Secondly, a corresponding counter function __gcov_merge_icall_topn (Top N value tracking for indirect calls) is included in base.c with the other gcov counters unused for kernel profiling. 2017-08-30perf/core: Fix group {cpu,task} validationMark Rutland

Regardless of which events form a group, it does not make sense for the events to target different tasks and/or CPUs, as this leaves the group inconsistent and impossible to schedule. The core perf code assumes that these are consistent across (successfully intialised) groups. Core perf code only verifies this when moving SW events into a HW context. Thus, we can violate this requirement for pure SW groups and pure HW groups, unless the relevant PMU driver happens to perform this verification itself. These mismatched groups subsequently wreak havoc elsewhere. For example, we handle watchpoints as SW events, and reserve watchpoint HW on a per-CPU basis at pmu::event_init() time to ensure that any event that is initialised is guaranteed to have a slot at pmu::add() time. However, the core code only checks the group leader's cpu filter (via event_filter_match()), and can thus install follower events onto CPUs violating thier (mismatched) CPU filters, potentially installing them into a CPU without sufficient reserved slots. We really need to change __unhash_process() to nullify group_leader, parent, and real_parent, but this needs some cleanups. Until then we can turn task_tgid_nr_ns() into another user of __task_pid_nr_ns() and fix the problem. [ Upstream commit 2d39b3cd34e6d323720d4c61bd714f5ae202c022 ] Since commit 00cd5c37afd5 ("ptrace: permit ptracing of /sbin/init") we can now trace init processes. init is initially protected with SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE which will prevent fatal signals such as SIGSTOP, but there are a number of paths during tracing where SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE can be implicitly cleared. This can result in init becoming stoppable/killable after tracing. For example, running: while true; do kill -STOP 1; done & strace -p 1 and then stopping strace and the kill loop will result in init being left in state TASK_STOPPED. Sending SIGCONT to init will resume it, but init will now respond to future SIGSTOP signals rather than ignoring them. Make sure that when setting SIGNAL_STOP_CONTINUED/SIGNAL_STOP_STOPPED that we don't clear SIGNAL_UNKILLABLE. After NUMA affinity 4c16bd327c74 ("workqueue: implement NUMA affinity for unbound workqueues"), this is no longer true due to per-node worker pools. While the right way to create an ordered workqueue is alloc_ordered_workqueue(), the documentation has been misleading for a long time and people do use WQ_UNBOUND and max_active == 1 for ordered workqueues which can lead to subtle bugs which are very difficult to trigger. It's unlikely that we'd see noticeable performance impact by enforcing ordering on WQ_UNBOUND / max_active == 1 workqueues. Let's automatically set __WQ_ORDERED for those workqueues.
