29 hoursvirtio_net: Enforce minimum TX ring size for reliabilityLaurent Vivier
[ Upstream commit 24b2f5df86aaebbe7bac40304eaf5a146c02367c ] The `tx_may_stop()` logic stops TX queues if free descriptors (`sq->vq->num_free`) fall below the threshold of (`MAX_SKB_FRAGS` + 2). If the total ring size (`ring_num`) is not strictly greater than this value, queues can become persistently stopped or stop after minimal use, severely degrading performance. A single sk_buff transmission typically requires descriptors for: - The virtio_net_hdr (1 descriptor) - The sk_buff's linear data (head) (1 descriptor) - Paged fragments (up to MAX_SKB_FRAGS descriptors) This patch enforces that the TX ring size ('ring_num') must be strictly greater than (MAX_SKB_FRAGS + 2). This ensures that the ring is always large enough to hold at least one maximally-fragmented packet plus at least one additional slot. The config_work in probe() will get scheduled until virtnet_open() enables the config change notification via virtio_config_driver_enable(). 2025-07-10virtio-net: xsk: rx: fix the frame's length checkBui Quang Minh
commit 5177373c31318c3c6a190383bfd232e6cf565c36 upstream. When calling buf_to_xdp, the len argument is the frame data's length without virtio header's length (vi->hdr_len). We check that len with xsk_pool_get_rx_frame_size() + vi->hdr_len to ensure the provided len does not larger than the allocated chunk size. The additional vi->hdr_len is because in virtnet_add_recvbuf_xsk, we use part of XDP_PACKET_HEADROOM for virtio header and ask the vhost to start placing data from hard_start + XDP_PACKET_HEADROOM - vi->hdr_len not hard_start + XDP_PACKET_HEADROOM But the first buffer has virtio_header, so the maximum frame's length in the first buffer can only be xsk_pool_get_rx_frame_size() not xsk_pool_get_rx_frame_size() + vi->hdr_len like in the current check. This commit adds an additional argument to buf_to_xdp differentiate between the first buffer and other ones to correctly calculate the maximum frame's length. 2024-12-19virtio_net: correct netdev_tx_reset_queue() invocation pointKoichiro Den

When virtnet_close is followed by virtnet_open, some TX completions can possibly remain unconsumed, until they are finally processed during the first NAPI poll after the netdev_tx_reset_queue(), resulting in a crash [1]. Commit b96ed2c97c79 ("virtio_net: move netdev_tx_reset_queue() call before RX napi enable") was not sufficient to eliminate all BQL crash cases for virtio-net. This issue can be reproduced with the latest net-next master by running: `while :; do ip l set DEV down; ip l set DEV up; done` under heavy network TX load from inside the machine. netdev_tx_reset_queue() can actually be dropped from virtnet_open path; the device is not stopped in any case. For BQL core part, it's just like traffic nearly ceases to exist for some period. For stall detector added to BQL, even if virtnet_close could somehow lead to some TX completions delayed for long, followed by virtnet_open, we can just take it as stall as mentioned in commit 6025b9135f7a ("net: dqs: add NIC stall detector based on BQL"). Note also that users can still reset stall_max via sysfs. So, drop netdev_tx_reset_queue() from virtnet_enable_queue_pair(). This eliminates the BQL crashes. As a result, netdev_tx_reset_queue() is now explicitly required in freeze/restore path. This patch adds it to immediately after free_unused_bufs(), following the rule of thumb: netdev_tx_reset_queue() should follow any SKB freeing not followed by netdev_tx_completed_queue(). This seems the most consistent and streamlined approach, and now netdev_tx_reset_queue() runs whenever free_unused_bufs() is done. 2024-12-14virtio-net: fix overflow inside virtnet_rq_allocXuan Zhuo
[ Upstream commit 6aacd1484468361d1d04badfe75f264fa5314864 ] When the frag just got a page, then may lead to regression on VM. Specially if the sysctl net.core.high_order_alloc_disable value is 1, then the frag always get a page when do refill. Which could see reliable crashes or scp failure (scp a file 100M in size to VM). The issue is that the virtnet_rq_dma takes up 16 bytes at the beginning of a new frag. When the frag size is larger than PAGE_SIZE, everything is fine. However, if the frag is only one page and the total size of the buffer and virtnet_rq_dma is larger than one page, an overflow may occur. The commit f9dac92ba908 ("virtio_ring: enable premapped mode whatever use_dma_api") introduced this problem. And we reverted some commits to fix this in last linux version. Now we try to enable it and fix this bug directly. Here, when the frag size is not enough, we reduce the buffer len to fix this problem. 2024-11-07virtio_net: Update rss when set queuePhilo Lu
RSS configuration should be updated with queue number. In particular, it should be updated when (1) rss enabled and (2) default rss configuration is used without user modification. During rss command processing, device updates queue_pairs using rss.max_tx_vq. That is, the device updates queue_pairs together with rss, so we can skip the sperate queue_pairs update (VIRTIO_NET_CTRL_MQ_VQ_PAIRS_SET below) and return directly. 2024-11-07virtio_net: Sync rss config to device when virtnet_probePhilo Lu
During virtnet_probe, default rss configuration is initialized, but was not committed to the device. This patch fix this by sending rss command after device ready in virtnet_probe. Otherwise, the actual rss configuration used by device can be different with that read by user from driver, which may confuse the user. If the command committing fails, driver rss will be disabled. 2024-11-07virtio_net: Support dynamic rss indirection table sizePhilo Lu
When reading/writing virtio_net_ctrl_rss, we get the indirection table size from vi->rss_indir_table_size, which is initialized in virtnet_probe(). However, the actual size of indirection_table was set as VIRTIO_NET_RSS_MAX_TABLE_LEN=128. This collision may cause issues if the vi->rss_indir_table_size exceeds 128. This patch instead uses dynamic indirection table, allocated with vi->rss after vi->rss_indir_table_size initialized. And free it in virtnet_remove(). In virtnet_commit_rss_command(), sgs for rss is initialized differently with hash_report. Static analysis on linux-next has detected the following issue in function virtnet_stats_ctx_init, in drivers/net/virtio_net.c : if (vi->device_stats_cap & VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ) { queue_type = VIRTNET_Q_TYPE_CQ; ctx->bitmap[queue_type] |= VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ; ctx->desc_num[queue_type] += ARRAY_SIZE(virtnet_stats_cvq_desc); ctx->size[queue_type] += sizeof(struct virtio_net_stats_cvq); } ctx->bitmap is declared as a u32 however it is being bit-wise or'd with VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ and this is defined as 1 << 32: include/uapi/linux/virtio_net.h:#define VIRTIO_NET_STATS_TYPE_CVQ (1ULL << 32) ..and hence the bit-wise or operation won't set any bits in ctx->bitmap because 1ULL < 32 is too wide for a u32. In fact, the field is read into a u64: u64 offset, bitmap; .... bitmap = ctx->bitmap[queue_type]; so to fix, it is enough to make bitmap an array of u64. 2024-09-26virtio_net: Fix mismatched buf address when unmapping for small packetsWenbo Li
Currently, the virtio-net driver will perform a pre-dma-mapping for small or mergeable RX buffer. But for small packets, a mismatched address without VIRTNET_RX_PAD and xdp_headroom is used for unmapping. That will result in unsynchronized buffers when SWIOTLB is enabled, for example, when running as a TDX guest. This patch unifies the address passed to the virtio core as the address of the virtnet header and fixes the mismatched buffer address. In the process: 1. We may need to copy data to create skb for XDP_PASS. 2. We may need to call xsk_buff_free() to release the buffer. 3. The handle for xdp_buff is difference from the buffer. If we pushed this logic into existing receive handle(merge and small), we would have to maintain code scattered inside merge and small (and big). So I think it is a good choice for us to put the xsk code into an independent function. 2024-06-19virtio_net: fixing XDP for fully checksummed packets handlingHeng Qi
The XDP program can't correctly handle partially checksummed packets, but works fine with fully checksummed packets. If the device has already validated fully checksummed packets, then the driver doesn't need to re-validate them, saving CPU resources. Additionally, the driver does not drop all partially checksummed packets when VIRTIO_NET_F_GUEST_CSUM is not negotiated. This is not a bug, as the driver has always done this. 2024-06-19virtio_net: checksum offloading handling fixHeng Qi
In virtio spec 0.95, VIRTIO_NET_F_GUEST_CSUM was designed to handle partially checksummed packets, and the validation of fully checksummed packets by the device is independent of VIRTIO_NET_F_GUEST_CSUM negotiation. However, the specification erroneously stated: "If VIRTIO_NET_F_GUEST_CSUM is not negotiated, the device MUST set flags to zero and SHOULD supply a fully checksummed packet to the driver." This statement is inaccurate because even without VIRTIO_NET_F_GUEST_CSUM negotiation, the device can still set the VIRTIO_NET_HDR_F_DATA_VALID flag. Essentially, the device can facilitate the validation of these packets' checksums - a process known as RX checksum offloading - removing the need for the driver to do so. This scenario is currently not implemented in the driver and requires correction. The necessary specification correction[1] has been made and approved in the virtio TC vote.
