2023-02-06net/sched: taprio: only pass gate mask per TXQ for igc, stmmac, tsnep, am65_cpswVladimir Oltean
There are 2 classes of in-tree drivers currently: - those who act upon struct tc_taprio_sched_entry :: gate_mask as if it holds a bit mask of TXQs - those who act upon the gate_mask as if it holds a bit mask of TCs When it comes to the standard, IEEE 802.1Q-2018 does say this in the second paragraph of section 8.6.8.4 Enhancements for scheduled traffic: | A gate control list associated with each Port contains an ordered list | of gate operations. Each gate operation changes the transmission gate | state for the gate associated with each of the Port's traffic class | queues and allows associated control operations to be scheduled. In typically obtuse language, it refers to a "traffic class queue" rather than a "traffic class" or a "queue". But careful reading of 802.1Q clarifies that "traffic class" and "queue" are in fact synonymous (see 8.6.6 Queuing frames): | A queue in this context is not necessarily a single FIFO data structure. | A queue is a record of all frames of a given traffic class awaiting | transmission on a given Bridge Port. The structure of this record is not | specified. i.o.w. their definition of "queue" isn't the Linux TX queue. The gate_mask really is input into taprio via its UAPI as a mask of traffic classes, but taprio_sched_to_offload() converts it into a TXQ mask. The breakdown of drivers which handle TC_SETUP_QDISC_TAPRIO is: - hellcreek, felix, sja1105: these are DSA switches, it's not even very clear what TXQs correspond to, other than purely software constructs. Only the mqprio configuration with 8 TCs and 1 TXQ per TC makes sense. So it's fine to convert these to a gate mask per TC. - enetc: I have the hardware and can confirm that the gate mask is per TC, and affects all TXQs (BD rings) configured for that priority. - igc: in igc_save_qbv_schedule(), the gate_mask is clearly interpreted to be per-TXQ. - tsnep: Gerhard Engleder clarifies that even though this hardware supports at most 1 TXQ per TC, the TXQ indices may be different from the TC values themselves, and it is the TXQ indices that matter to this hardware. So keep it per-TXQ as well. - stmmac: I have a GMAC datasheet, and in the EST section it does specify that the gate events are per TXQ rather than per TC. - lan966x: again, this is a switch, and while not a DSA one, the way in which it implements lan966x_mqprio_add() - by only allowing num_tc == NUM_PRIO_QUEUES (8) - makes it clear to me that TXQs are a purely software construct here as well. They seem to map 1:1 with TCs. - am65_cpsw: from looking at am65_cpsw_est_set_sched_cmds(), I get the impression that the fetch_allow variable is treated like a prio_mask. This definitely sounds closer to a per-TC gate mask rather than a per-TXQ one, and TI documentation does seem to recomment an identity mapping between TCs and TXQs. However, Roger Quadros would like to do some testing before making changes, so I'm leaving this driver to operate as it did before, for now. Link with more details at the end. Based on this breakdown, we have 5 drivers with a gate mask per TC and 4 with a gate mask per TXQ. So let's make the gate mask per TXQ the opt-in and the gate mask per TC the default. Benefit from the TC_QUERY_CAPS feature that Jakub suggested we add, and query the device driver before calling the proper ndo_setup_tc(), and figure out if it expects one or the other format. 2023-02-02drivers: net: turn on XDP featuresMarek Majtyka
A summary of the flags being set for various drivers is given below. Note that XDP_F_REDIRECT_TARGET and XDP_F_FRAG_TARGET are features that can be turned off and on at runtime. This means that these flags may be set and unset under RTNL lock protection by the driver. Hence, READ_ONCE must be used by code loading the flag value. Also, these flags are not used for synchronization against the availability of XDP resources on a device. It is merely a hint, and hence the read may race with the actual teardown of XDP resources on the device. This may change in the future, e.g. operations taking a reference on the XDP resources of the driver, and in turn inhibiting turning off this flag. However, for now, it can only be used as a hint to check whether device supports becoming a redirection target. Turn 'hw-offload' feature flag on for: - netronome (nfp) - netdevsim. 2023-01-20net: stmmac: enable all safety features by defaultAndrew Halaney
In the original implementation of dwmac5 commit 8bf993a5877e ("net: stmmac: Add support for DWMAC5 and implement Safety Features") all safety features were enabled by default. Later it seems some implementations didn't have support for all the features, so in commit 5ac712dcdfef ("net: stmmac: enable platform specific safety features") the safety_feat_cfg structure was added to the callback and defined for some platforms to selectively enable these safety features. The problem is that only certain platforms were given that software support. If the automotive safety package bit is set in the hardware features register the safety feature callback is called for the platform, and for platforms that didn't get a safety_feat_cfg defined this results in the following NULL pointer dereference: [ 7.933303] Call trace: [ 7.935812] dwmac5_safety_feat_config+0x20/0x170 [stmmac] [ 7.941455] __stmmac_open+0x16c/0x474 [stmmac] [ 7.946117] stmmac_open+0x38/0x70 [stmmac] [ 7.950414] __dev_open+0x100/0x1dc [ 7.954006] __dev_change_flags+0x18c/0x204 [ 7.958297] dev_change_flags+0x24/0x6c [ 7.962237] do_setlink+0x2b8/0xfa4 [ 7.965827] __rtnl_newlink+0x4ec/0x840 [ 7.969766] rtnl_newlink+0x50/0x80 [ 7.973353] rtnetlink_rcv_msg+0x12c/0x374 [ 7.977557] netlink_rcv_skb+0x5c/0x130 [ 7.981500] rtnetlink_rcv+0x18/0x2c [ 7.985172] netlink_unicast+0x2e8/0x340 [ 7.989197] netlink_sendmsg+0x1a8/0x420 [ 7.993222] ____sys_sendmsg+0x218/0x280 [ 7.997249] ___sys_sendmsg+0xac/0x100 [ 8.001103] __sys_sendmsg+0x84/0xe0 [ 8.004776] __arm64_sys_sendmsg+0x24/0x30 [ 8.008983] invoke_syscall+0x48/0x114 [ 8.012840] el0_svc_common.constprop.0+0xcc/0xec [ 8.017665] do_el0_svc+0x38/0xb0 [ 8.021071] el0_svc+0x2c/0x84 [ 8.024212] el0t_64_sync_handler+0xf4/0x120 [ 8.028598] el0t_64_sync+0x190/0x194 Go back to the original behavior, if the automotive safety package is found to be supported in hardware enable all the features unless safety_feat_cfg is passed in saying this particular platform only supports a subset of the features. This reverts commit f72cd76b05ea1ce9258484e8127932d0ea928f22. This patch is so broken, it hurts. Apparently no one reviewed it and it passed the build testing (because the code was compiled out), but it was obviously never compile-tested, since it produces the following build error, due to an incomplete conversion where an extra argument was left, although the function being called was left: stmmac_main.c: In function ‘stmmac_cmdline_opt’: stmmac_main.c:7586:28: error: too many arguments to function ‘sysfs_streq’ 7586 | } else if (sysfs_streq(opt, "pause:", 6)) { | ^~~~~~~~~~~ In file included from ../include/linux/bitmap.h:11, from ../include/linux/cpumask.h:12, from ../include/linux/smp.h:13, from ../include/linux/lockdep.h:14, from ../include/linux/mutex.h:17, from ../include/linux/notifier.h:14, from ../include/linux/clk.h:14, from ../drivers/net/ethernet/stmicro/stmmac/stmmac_main.c:17: ../include/linux/string.h:185:13: note: declared here 185 | extern bool sysfs_streq(const char *s1, const char *s2); | ^~~~~~~~~~~ What's even worse is that the patch is flat out wrong. The stmmac_cmdline_opt() function does not parse sysfs input, but cmdline input such as "stmmaceth=tc:1,pause:1". The pattern of using strsep() followed by strncmp() for such strings is not unique to stmmac, it can also be found mainly in drivers under drivers/video/fbdev/. With strncmp("tc:", 3), the code matches on the "tc:1" token properly. With sysfs_streq("tc:"), it doesn't. There are two problems with meson8b_devm_clk_prepare_enable(), introduced in commit a54dc4a49045 ("net: stmmac: dwmac-meson8b: Make the clock enabling code re-usable"): - It doesn't pass the clk argument, but instead always the rgmii_tx_clk of the device. - It silently ignores the return value of devm_add_action_or_reset(). The former didn't become an actual bug until another user showed up in the next commit 9308c47640d5 ("net: stmmac: dwmac-meson8b: add support for the RX delay configuration"). The latter means the callers could end up with the clock not actually prepared/enabled. The issue is related with serdes which impacts clock. There is serdes in ADLink I-Pi SMARC board ethernet controller. Please refer to commit b9663b7ca6ff78 ("net: stmmac: Enable SERDES power up/down sequence") for detial. When issue is reproduced, DMA engine clock is not ready because serdes is not powered up. To reproduce DMA engine reset timeout issue with hardware which has serdes in GBE controller, install Ubuntu. In Ubuntu GUI, click "Power Off/Log Out" -> "Suspend" menu, it disables network interface, then goes to sleep mode. When it wakes up, it enables network interface again. Stmmac driver is called in this way: 1. stmmac_release: Stop network interface. In this function, it disables DMA engine and network interface; 2. stmmac_suspend: It is called in kernel suspend flow. But because network interface has been disabled(netif_running(ndev) is false), it does nothing and returns directly; 3. System goes into S3 or S0ix state. Some time later, system is waken up by keyboard or mouse; 4. stmmac_resume: It does nothing because network interface has been disabled; 5. stmmac_open: It is called to enable network interace again. DMA engine is initialized in this API, but serdes is not power on so there will be DMA engine reset timeout issue. Similarly, serdes powerdown should be added in stmmac_release. Network interface might be disabled by cmd "ifconfig eth0 down", DMA engine, phy and mac have been disabled in ndo_stop callback, serdes should be powered down as well. It doesn't make sense that serdes is on while other components have been turned off. If ethernet interface is in enabled state(netif_running(ndev) is true) before suspend/resume, the issue couldn't be reproduced because serdes could be powered up in stmmac_resume. Because serdes_powerup is added in stmmac_open, it doesn't need to be called in probe function.
