2024-12-14drm/vc4: hvs: Set AXI panic modes for the HVSDave Stevenson
[ Upstream commit 014eccc9da7bfc76a3107fceea37dd60f1d63630 ] The HVS can change AXI request mode based on how full the COB FIFOs are. Until now the vc4 driver has been relying on the firmware to have set these to sensible values. With HVS channel 2 now being used for live video, change the panic mode for all channels to be explicitly set by the driver, and the same for all channels. 2024-12-05drm/vc4: Introduce generation number enumMaxime Ripard
[ Upstream commit 24c5ed3ddf27313b248900455b0312bd7a9d3554 ] With the introduction of the BCM2712 support, we will get yet another generation of display engine to support. The binary check of whether it's VC5 or not thus doesn't work anymore, especially since some parts of the driver will have changed with BCM2711, and some others with BCM2712. Let's introduce an enum to store the generation the driver is running on, which should provide more flexibility. 2024-12-05drm/vc4: hvs: Remove incorrect limit from hvs_dlist debugfs functionDave Stevenson

2023-06-08drm/vc4: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Trivially convert the vc4 drm drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. The HVS Composite Output Buffer (COB) is the memory used to generate the output pixel data. Until now the vc4 driver has been relying on the firmware to have set these to sensible values. In testing triple screen support it has been noted that only 1 line was being assigned to HVS channel 2. Whilst that is fine for the transposer (TXP), and indeed needed as only some pixels have an alpha channel, it is insufficient to run a live display. Split the COB more evenly between the 3 HVS channels. 2022-12-22drm/vc4: use new debugfs device-centered functionsMaíra Canal
Currently, vc4 has its own debugfs infrastructure that adds the debugfs files on drm_dev_register(). With the introduction of the new debugfs, functions, replace the vc4 debugfs structure with the DRM debugfs device-centered function, drm_debugfs_add_file(). Moreover, remove the explicit error handling of debugfs related functions, considering that the only failure mode is -ENOMEM and also that error handling is not recommended for debugfs functions, as pointed out in [1]. 2022-10-28drm/vc4: hdmi: Rework hdmi_enable_4kp60 detection codeMaxime Ripard
In order to support higher HDMI frequencies, users have to set the hdmi_enable_4kp60 parameter in their config.txt file. This will have the side-effect of raising the maximum of the core clock, tied to the HVS, and managed by the HVS driver. However, we are querying this in the HDMI driver by poking into the HVS structure to get our struct clk handle. Let's make this part of the HVS bind implementation to have all the core clock related setup in the same place. The vc4 has a custom API to allow components to register a debugfs file before the DRM driver has been registered and the debugfs_init hook has been called. However, the .late_register hook allows to have the debugfs file creation deferred after that time already. When the HVS driver is unbound, a lot of memory allocations in the LBM and DLIST RAM are still assigned to planes that are still allocated. Thus, we hit a warning when calling drm_mm_takedown() since the memory pool is not completely free of allocations. Let's free all the currently live entries before calling drm_mm_takedown(). 2022-07-13drm/vc4: hvs: Protect device resources after removalMaxime Ripard
Whenever the device and driver are unbound, the main device and all the subdevices will be removed by calling their unbind() method. However, the DRM device itself will only be freed when the last user will have closed it. It means that there is a time window where the device and its resources aren't there anymore, but the userspace can still call into our driver. Fortunately, the DRM framework provides the drm_dev_enter() and drm_dev_exit() functions to make sure our underlying device is still there for the section protected by those calls. Let's add them to the HVS driver. 2022-04-08drm/vc4: hvs: Reset muxes at probe timeMaxime Ripard
By default, the HVS driver will force the HVS output 3 to be muxed to the HVS channel 2. However, the Transposer can only be assigned to the HVS channel 2, so whenever we try to use the writeback connector, we'll mux its associated output (Output 2) to the channel 2. This leads to both the output 2 and 3 feeding from the same channel, which is explicitly discouraged in the documentation. In order to avoid this, let's reset all the output muxes to their reset value. 2021-11-05drm/vc4: crtc: Copy assigned channel to the CRTCMaxime Ripard
Accessing the crtc->state pointer from outside the modesetting context is not allowed. We thus need to copy whatever we need from the KMS state to our structure in order to access it. 2021-11-05drm/vc4: Fix non-blocking commit getting stuck foreverMaxime Ripard
In some situation, we can end up being stuck on a non-blocking that went through properly. The situation that seems to trigger it reliably is to first start a non-blocking commit, and then right after, and before we had any vblank interrupt), start a blocking commit. This will lead to the first commit workqueue to be scheduled, setup the display, while the second commit is waiting for the first one to be completed. The vblank interrupt will then be raised, vc4_crtc_handle_vblank() will run and will compare the active dlist in the HVS channel to the one associated with the crtc->state. However, at that point, the second commit is waiting using drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies that occurs after drm_atomic_helper_swap_state has been called, so crtc->state points to the second commit state. vc4_crtc_handle_vblank() will compare the two dlist addresses and since they don't match will ignore the interrupt. The vblank event will never be reported, and the first and second commit will wait for the first commit completion until they timeout. The underlying reason is that it was never safe to do so. Indeed, accessing the ->state pointer access synchronization is based on ownership guarantees that can only occur within the functions and hooks defined as part of the KMS framework, and obviously the irq handler isn't one of them. The rework to move to generic helpers only uncovered the underlying issue. However, since the code path between drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies() and drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_vblanks() is serialised and we can't get two commits in that path at the same time, we can work around this issue by setting a variable associated to struct drm_crtc to the dlist we expect, and then using it from the vc4_crtc_handle_vblank() function. Since that state is shared with the modesetting path, we also need to introduce a spinlock to protect the code shared between the interrupt handler and the modesetting path, protecting only our new variable for now. Accessing the crtc->state pointer from outside the modesetting context is not allowed. We thus need to copy whatever we need from the KMS state to our structure in order to access it. In VC4, a number of users of that pointers have crept in over the years, the first one being whether or not the downstream controller of the pixelvalve is our writeback controller. Fortunately for us, Since commit 39fcb2808376 ("drm/vc4: txp: Turn the TXP into a CRTC of its own") this is no longer something that can change from one commit to the other and is hardcoded. 2021-01-25drm/vc4: Correct lbm size and calculationDom Cobley
LBM base address is measured in units of pixels per cycle. That is 4 for 2711 (hvs5) and 2 for 2708. We are wasting 75% of lbm by indexing without the scaling. But we were also using too high a size for the lbm resulting in partial corruption (right hand side) of vertically scaled images, usually at 4K or lower resolutions with more layers. The physical RAM of LBM on 2711 is 8 * 1920 * 16 * 12-bit (pixels are stored 12-bits per component regardless of format). The HVS found in the BCM2711 has 6 outputs and 3 FIFOs, with each output being connected to a pixelvalve, and some muxing between the FIFOs and outputs. Any output cannot feed from any FIFO though, and they all have a bunch of constraints. In order to support this, let's store the possible FIFOs each output can be assigned to in the vc4_crtc_data, and use that information at atomic_check time to iterate over all the CRTCs enabled and assign them FIFOs. The channel assigned is then set in the vc4_crtc_state so that the rest of the driver can use it.
