2022-12-06drm/i915: Wrap all access to i915_vma.node.start|sizeChris Wilson
We already wrap i915_vma.node.start for use with the GGTT, as there we can perform additional sanity checks that the node belongs to the GGTT and fits within the 32b registers. In the next couple of patches, we will introduce guard pages around the objects _inside_ the drm_mm_node allocation. That is we will offset the vma->pages so that the first page is at drm_mm_node.start + vma->guard (not 0 as is currently the case). All users must then not use i915_vma.node.start directly, but compute the guard offset, thus all users are converted to use a i915_vma_offset() wrapper. The notable exceptions are the selftests that are testing exact behaviour of i915_vma_pin/i915_vma_insert. 2022-10-20drm/i915/selftests: Stop using kthread_stop()Tvrtko Ursulin
Since a7c01fa93aeb ("signal: break out of wait loops on kthread_stop()") kthread_stop() started asserting a pending signal which wreaks havoc with a few of our selftests. Mainly because they are not fully expecting to handle signals, but also cutting the intended test runtimes short due signal_pending() now returning true (via __igt_timeout), which therefore breaks both the patterns of: kthread_run() ..sleep for igt_timeout_ms to allow test to exercise stuff.. kthread_stop() And check for errors recorded in the thread. And also: Main thread | Test thread ---------------+------------------------------ kthread_run() | kthread_stop() | do stuff until __igt_timeout | -- exits early due signal -- Where this kthread_stop() was assume would have a "join" semantics, which it would have had if not the new signal assertion issue. To recap, threads are now likely to catch a previously impossible ERESTARTSYS or EINTR, marking the test as failed, or have a pointlessly short run time. To work around this start using kthread_work(er) API which provides an explicit way of waiting for threads to exit. And for cases where parent controls the test duration we add explicit signaling which threads will now use instead of relying on kthread_should_stop(). 2022-05-10drm/i915/pvc: Reduce stack usage in reset selftest with extra blitter engineJohn Harrison
PVC adds extra blitter engines (in the following patch). The reset selftest has a local array on the stack which is sized by the number of engines. The increase pushes the size of this array to the point where it trips the 'stack too large' compile warning. i915_gem_evict_something, v2. Because we will start to require the obj->resv lock for unbinding, ensure these vma eviction utility functions also take the lock. This requires some function signature changes, to ensure that the ww context is passed around, but is mostly straightforward. 2021-11-10drm/i915/selftests: Use clear_and_wake_up_bit() for the per-engine reset ↵Thomas Hellström
bitlocks Some selftests assume that nothing will attempt to grab these bitlocks while they are held by the selftests. With GuC, for example, that is not true because the hanging workloads may cause the GuC code to attempt to grab them for a global reset, and that may cause it to end up sleeping on the bit never waking up. Regardless whether that will be the final solution for GuC, use clear_and_wake_up_bit() pending a more thorough investigation on how this should be handled moving forward. To be clear this needs to be a temporary solution. If we can't find an in-kernel locking primitive to use here, we should at the very least add lockdep annotation to these bitlocks with a thorough explanation as to why we need to use bits. v3: - Use GEM_BUG_ON(test_and_set_bit()) rather than set_bit() to verify the assumption that nothing is holding the reset locks when we attempt to grab them. 2021-09-24drm/i915: Reduce the number of objects subject to memcpy recoverThomas Hellström
We really only need memcpy restore for objects that affect the operability of the migrate context. That is, primarily the page-table objects of the migrate VM. Add an object flag, I915_BO_ALLOC_PM_EARLY for objects that need early restores using memcpy and a way to assign LMEM page-table object flags to be used by the vms. Restore objects without this flag with the gpu blitter and only objects carrying the flag using TTM memcpy. Initially mark the migrate, gt, gtt and vgpu vms to use this flag, and defer for a later audit which vms actually need it. Most importantly, user- allocated vms with pinned page-table objects can be restored using the blitter. Performance-wise memcpy restore is probably as fast as gpu restore if not faster, but using gpu restore will help tackling future restrictions in mappable LMEM size. v4: - Don't mark the aliasing ppgtt page table flags for early resume, but rather the ggtt page table flags as intended. The important part isn't so much that this does an rcu lookup - that's more an implementation detail, which will also be removed. The thing that makes this different from other functions is that it's gettting you the vm that batchbuffers will run in for that gem context, which is either a full ppgtt stored in gem->ctx, or the ggtt. We'll make more use of this function later on. 2021-07-27drm/i915/selftest: Bump selftest timeouts for hangcheckJohn Harrison
Some testing environments and some heavier tests are slower than previous limits allowed for. For example, it can take multiple seconds for the 'context has been reset' notification handler to reach the 'kill the requests' code in the 'active' version of the 'reset engines' test. During which time the selftest gets bored, gives up waiting and fails the test. There is also an async thread that the selftest uses to pump work through the hardware in parallel to the context that is marked for reset. That also could get bored waiting for completions and kill the test off. Lastly, the flush at the of various test sections can also see timeouts due to the large amount of work backed up. This is also true of the live_hwsp_read test. 2021-07-27drm/i915/selftest: Fix hangcheck self test for GuC submissionJohn Harrison
When GuC submission is enabled, the GuC controls engine resets. Rather than explicitly triggering a reset, the driver must submit a hanging context to GuC and wait for the reset to occur. Conversely, one of the tests specifically sends hanging batches to the engines but wants them to sit around until a manual reset of the full GT (including GuC itself). That means disabling GuC based engine resets to prevent those from killing the hanging batch too soon. So, add support to the scheduling policy helper for disabling resets as well as making them quicker! In GuC submission mode, the 'is engine idle' test basically turns into 'is engine PM wakelock held'. Independently, there is a heartbeat disable helper function that the tests use. For unexplained reasons, this acquires the engine wakelock before disabling the heartbeat and only releases it when re-enabling the heartbeat. As one of the tests tries to do a wait for idle in the middle of a heartbeat disabled section, it is therefore guaranteed to always fail. Added a 'no_pm' variant of the heartbeat helper that allows the engine to be asleep while also having heartbeats disabled. 2020-12-24drm/i915/gt: Replace direct submit with direct call to taskletChris Wilson
Rather than having special case code for opportunistically calling process_csb() and performing a direct submit while holding the engine spinlock for submitting the request, simply call the tasklet directly. This allows us to retain the direct submission path, including the CS draining to allow fast/immediate submissions, without requiring any duplicated code paths, and most importantly greatly simplifying the control flow by removing reentrancy. This will enable us to close a few races in the virtual engines in the next few patches. Trying to use i915_request_skip() prior to i915_request_add() causes us to try and fill the ring upto request->postfix, which has not yet been set, and so may cause us to memset() past the end of the ring. Instead of skipping the request immediately, just flag the error on the request (only accepting the first fatal error we see) and then clear the request upon submission. 2019-12-21drm/i915: Remove i915->kernel_contextChris Wilson
Allocate only an internal intel_context for the kernel_context, forgoing a global GEM context for internal use as we only require a separate address space (for our own protection). Now having weaned GT from requiring ce->gem_context, we can stop referencing it entirely. This also means we no longer have to create random and unnecessary GEM contexts for internal use. GEM contexts are now entirely for tracking GEM clients, and intel_context the execution environment on the GPU. As drm now exports a method to create an anonymous struct file around a drm_device for internal use, make use of it to avoid our horrible hacks. Danial suggested that the mock_file_put() wrapper was suitable for drm-core, along with the mock_drm_getfile() [and that the vestigal mock_drm_file() in this patch should perhaps be the drm interface itself]. However, the eventual goal is to remove the mock_drm_file() and use the struct file and fput() directly, in this patch we take a simple transition in that direction. An interesting observation made with our parallel selftests was that on our small/single cpu systems we would call kthread_stop() before the kthreads were spawned. If this happens, the kthread is never run at all; completely bypassing the test. A simple yield() from the parent will ensure that all children have the opportunity to start before we reap them.
