2020-06-23drm: bridge: adv7511: Implement bridge connector operationsLaurent Pinchart
Implement the bridge connector-related .get_edid(), .detect() and .hpd_notify() operations, and report the related bridge capabilities. Output status detection is implemented using the same backend as for the DRM connector, but requires making mode retrieval at detection time optional as no pointer to the connector is available to the bridge .detect() operation. The reason for the need to retrieve modes at detection time is unclear to me, and this may benefit from further refactoring of hot plug handling code. Hot plug detection is notified through the bridge HPD notification framework when the bridge is used without creating a connector, and falls back to the existing implementation otherwise. CEC handling of disconnection is handled in the new .hpd_notify() operation in the new code path. 2020-02-26drm/bridge: Extend bridge API to disable connector creationLaurent Pinchart
Most bridge drivers create a DRM connector to model the connector at the output of the bridge. This model is historical and has worked pretty well so far, but causes several issues: - It prevents supporting more complex display pipelines where DRM connector operations are split over multiple components. For instance a pipeline with a bridge connected to the DDC signals to read EDID data, and another one connected to the HPD signal to detect connection and disconnection, will not be possible to support through this model. - It requires every bridge driver to implement similar connector handling code, resulting in code duplication. - It assumes that a bridge will either be wired to a connector or to another bridge, but doesn't support bridges that can be used in both positions very well (although there is some ad-hoc support for this in the analogix_dp bridge driver). In order to solve these issues, ownership of the connector should be moved to the display controller driver (where it can be implemented using helpers provided by the core). Extend the bridge API to allow disabling connector creation in bridge drivers as a first step towards the new model. The new flags argument to the bridge .attach() operation allows instructing the bridge driver to skip creating a connector. Unconditionally set the new flags argument to 0 for now to keep the existing behaviour, and modify all existing bridge drivers to return an error when connector creation is not requested as they don't support this feature yet. This reverts commit 83f35bc3a852f1c3892c7474998c5cec707c7ba3. There are at least two DSI controller drivers which relies on the old behaviour of adv7511 driver. To avoid platform breakage this patch should be reverted. This is a temporary solution, as it blocks adv7511 usage with other platforms. Assumption that DSI device driver (bridge/panel) should first expose drm_bridge/drm_panel object, then look for DSI bus is just incorrect - it can work with devices controlled via i2c but it cannot work with devices controlled via DSI - they will not be able to probe. To solve the issue following steps should be performed: - rework reverted patch allowing co-operation with broken DSI controller drivers - with simple/ugly workaround, - fix controller drivers and then remove workaround. 2019-08-14i2c: replace i2c_new_secondary_device with an ERR_PTR variantWolfram Sang
In the general move to have i2c_new_*_device functions which return ERR_PTR instead of NULL, this patch converts i2c_new_secondary_device(). There are only few users, so this patch converts the I2C core and all users in one go. The function gets renamed to i2c_new_ancillary_device() so out-of-tree users will get a build failure to understand they need to adapt their error checking code. 2019-07-01drm/bridge: adv7511: Attach to DSI host at probe timeMatt Redfearn
In contrast to all of the DSI panel drivers in drivers/gpu/drm/panel which attach to the DSI host via mipi_dsi_attach() at probe time, the ADV7533 bridge device does not. Instead it defers this to the point that the upstream device connects to its bridge via drm_bridge_attach(). The generic Synopsys MIPI DSI host driver does not register it's own drm_bridge until the MIPI DSI has attached. But it does not call drm_bridge_attach() on the downstream device until the upstream device has attached. This leads to a chicken and the egg failure and the DRM pipeline does not complete. Since all other mipi_dsi_device drivers call mipi_dsi_attach() in probe(), make the adv7533 mipi_dsi_device do the same. This ensures that the Synopsys MIPI DSI host registers it's bridge such that it is available for the upstream device to connect to. 2019-05-13drm/bridge: adv7511: Fix low refresh rate selectionMatt Redfearn
The driver currently sets register 0xfb (Low Refresh Rate) based on the value of mode->vrefresh. Firstly, this field is specified to be in Hz, but the magic numbers used by the code are Hz * 1000. This essentially leads to the low refresh rate always being set to 0x01, since the vrefresh value will always be less than 24000. Fix the magic numbers to be in Hz. Secondly, according to the comment in drm_modes.h, the field is not supposed to be used in a functional way anyway. Instead, use the helper function drm_mode_vrefresh(). Having the probe helper stuff (which pretty much everyone needs) in the drm_crtc_helper.h file (which atomic drivers should never need) is confusing. Split them out. To make sure I actually achieved the goal here I went through all drivers. And indeed, all atomic drivers are now free of drm_crtc_helper.h includes. v2: Make it compile. There was so much compile fail on arm drivers that I figured I'll better not include any of the acks on v1. v3: Massive rebase because i915 has lost a lot of drmP.h includes, but not all: Through drm_crtc_helper.h > drm_modeset_helper.h -> drmP.h there was still one, which this patch largely removes. Which means rolling out lots more includes all over. This will also conflict with ongoing drmP.h cleanup by others I expect. v3: Rebase on top of atomic bochs. v4: Review from Laurent for bridge/rcar/omap/shmob/core bits: - (re)move some of the added includes, use the better include files in other places (all suggested from Laurent adopted unchanged). - sort alphabetically v5: Actually try to sort them, and while at it, sort all the ones I touch. v6: Rebase onto i915 changes. v7: Rebase once more. adv7511_probe() is never called in atomic context. This function is only set as ".probe" in struct i2c_driver. Despite never getting called from atomic context, adv7511_probe() calls mdelay() to busily wait. This is not necessary and can be replaced with usleep_range() to avoid busy waiting. This is found by a static analysis tool named DCNS written by myself. And I also manually check it. The ADV7511 has four 256-byte maps that can be accessed via the main I2C ports. Each map has it own I2C address and acts as a standard slave device on the I2C bus. Allow a device tree node to override the default addresses so that address conflicts with other devices on the same bus may be resolved at the board description level. 2017-11-30drm/bridge: adv7511/33: Fix adv7511_cec_init() failure handlingHans Verkuil
If the device tree for a board did not specify a cec clock, then adv7511_cec_init would return an error, which would cause adv7511_probe() to fail and thus there is no HDMI output. There is no need to have adv7511_probe() fail if the CEC initialization fails, so just change adv7511_cec_init() to a void function. In addition, adv7511_cec_init() should just return silently if the cec clock isn't found and show a message for any other errors. An otherwise correct cleanup patch from Dan Carpenter turned this broken failure handling into a kernel Oops, so bisection points to commit 7af35b0addbc ("drm/kirin: Checking for IS_ERR() instead of NULL") rather than 3b1b975003e4 ("drm: adv7511/33: add HDMI CEC support"). 2017-09-16drm/bridge: adv7511: Remove private copy of the EDIDLars-Peter Clausen
The adv7511 driver keeps a private copy of the EDID in its driver state struct. But this copy is only used in adv7511_get_modes() where it is also retrieved, so there is no need to keep this extra copy around. If a need to access the EDID elsewhere in the driver ever arises the copy that is stored in the connector can be used. This copy is accessible through drm_connector_get_edid(). Note, this patch removes the NULL check of the EDID before passing it to drm_detect_hdmi_monitor(), but that is fine since the function correctly handles the case where the EDID is NULL. Currently adv7511_get_modes() bails out early when no EDID could be retrieved. This leaves the previous EDID in place, which is typically not the intended behavior and might confuse applications. Instead the EDID should be cleared when no EDID could be retrieved. All functions that are called after the EDID check handle the case where the EDID is NULL just fine and exhibit the expected behavior, so just drop the check. Unfortunately, since ports/endpoints are used as well for video linkages, there are some issues mixing the port ids to the two (video and audio) namespaces. To solve this issue, this patch adds new .get_dai_id callback on hdmi_codec_ops. The will assume that HDMI audio out will be connected to reg = <2>. This will then be remapped to the ALSA SoC side will as DAI 0. Allowing the adv7511's hdmi audio support to be used with the audio-card-graph. Credit to Kuninori Morimoto who's patch to dw-hdmi-i2s-audio.c was what this was mostly copy-pasted from. 2017-04-06drm: convert drivers to use of_graph_get_remote_nodeRob Herring
Convert drivers to use the new of_graph_get_remote_node() helper instead of parsing the endpoint node and then getting the remote device node. Now drivers can just specify the device node and which port/endpoint and get back the connected remote device node. The details of the graph binding are nicely abstracted into the core OF graph code. This changes some error messages to debug messages (in the graph core). Graph connections are often "no connects" depending on the particular board, so we want to avoid spurious messages. Plus the kernel is not a DT validator. 2017-01-19drm/bridge: adv7511: Re-write the i2c address before EDID probingJohn Stultz
I've found that by just turning the chip on and off via the POWER_DOWN register, I end up getting i2c_transfer errors on HiKey. Investigating further, it turns out that some of the register state in hardware is getting lost, as the device registers are reset when the chip is powered down. Thus this patch simply re-writes the i2c address to the ADV7511_REG_EDID_I2C_ADDR register to ensure its properly set before we try to read the EDID data.
