This is a variant of fgets which fails with ERANGE if the
buffer is too small, and the buffer length is given as an
argument of type size_t.
This function will be useful for implementing NSS file reading
operations. Compared to a direct implementation using the public API,
it avoids an lseek system call in case the line terminator can be
found in the internal read buffer.

The implementation falls back to renameat if renameat2 is not available
in the kernel (or in the kernel headers) and the flags argument is zero.
Without kernel support, a non-zero argument returns EINVAL, not ENOSYS.
This mirrors what the kernel does for invalid renameat2 flags.

I used __fpos_t and __fpos64_t instead of fpos_t and fpos64_t because
the definitions of fpos_t and fpos64_t depend on the largefile mode.
I used __ssize_t and __gnuc_va_list in a handful of headers where
namespace cleanliness might be relevant even though they're
internal-use-only. In all other cases, I used the public-namespace
name.
There are a tiny handful of places where I left a use of 'struct _IO_FILE'
alone, because it was being used together with 'struct _IO_FILE_plus'
or 'struct _IO_FILE_complete' in the same arithmetic expression.
Because this patch was almost entirely done with search and replace, I
may have introduced indentation botches. I did proofread the diff,
but I may have missed something.
The ChangeLog below calls out all of the places where this was not a
pure search-and-replace change.
Installed stripped libraries and executables are unchanged by this patch,
except that some assertions in vfscanf.c change line numbers.

Continuing the fixes for linknamespace and localplt test failures with
-Os that arise from functions not being inlined in that case, this
patch fixes such failures for putc_unlocked and fputc_unlocked.
libc_hidden_* are used for both functions, while namespace issues are
addressed by making putc_unlocked a weak alias of hidden
__putc_unlocked, which is called in the one place where namespace
issues arise (and defined as an inline function in include/stdio.h).
Tested for x86_64 (both without -Os to make sure that case continues
to work, and with -Os to make sure all the relevant linknamespace and
localplt test failures are resolved). This completes fixing the -Os
linknamespace failures (at least for x86_64); localplt failures remain
after this patch.

Among other localplt test failures when building with -Os, there are
libc.so PLT references for fputs. fputs calls normally get redirected
to _IO_fputs by a macro in include/stdio.h (and _IO_fputs in turn uses
libc_hidden_proto), but GCC can convert an fprintf call with a
constant string argument into an fputs call, which of course is then
unaffected by the macro redirection. (I don't know why this issue
only appears with -Os.)
This patch duly adds a use of libc_hidden_proto for fputs. I see no
obvious reason why the fputs macro redirection is needed at all, but
this patch does not change it.
Tested for x86_64 (both that it removes this particular localplt
failure for -Os - but other such failures remain so the bug can't yet
be closed - and that the testsuite continues to pass without -Os).

Nearly everything in _G_config.h is either junk or more appropriately
defined elsewhere:
* _G_fpos_t, _G_fpos64_t, and _G_BUFSIZ are already completely unused.
* All remaining uses of _G_va_list have been changed to __gnuc_va_list.
* The definition of _G_HAVE_ST_BLKSIZE/_IO_HAVE_ST_BLKSIZE has
been inlined into its sole use.
* The complete definition of _G_iconv_t has been moved to libio.h and
renamed _IO_iconv_t (all actual users used that name).
* _G_IO_IO_FILE_VERSION is vestigial; some code cares whether
_IO_stdin_used exists, but nothing looks at its value. I've
preserved the value as a hardwired constant in csu/init.c.
This means csu/init.c no longer needs to include anything.
* Many of the headers included by _G_config.h were already being
included directly by either either libio.h or stdio.h; the
remaining ones were moved to libio.h.
* _G_HAVE_MREMAP is still relevant, because mremap genuinely is a
Linux extension; it's not in POSIX and as far as I can tell it's
not available on the Hurd either. I also preserved _G_HAVE_MMAP,
since it's conceivable someone would want to port glibc to a
MMU-less, mmap-less environment in the future. Both are now always
defined to 1/0 as is the current convention, instead of the older
1/undef convention. These are the only symbols still defined in
_G_config.h.
* The actual inclusion of _G_config.h moves from libio.h to libioP.h,
as this is where a potential override of _G_HAVE_MMAP happens.
* The #ifdef logic in libioP.h controlling _IO_JUMPS_OFFSET has been
simplified.
After this patch, the only surviving _G_ symbols are the struct tag
names _G_fpos_t and _G_fpos64_t, which are preserved for the sake of
C++ mangled names in applications, and _G_HAVE_MMAP and _G_HAVE_MREMAP,
which do not seem worth renaming.
Installed stripped libraries are unchanged by this patch.
* bits/_G_config.h: Move back to sysdeps/generic/_G_config.h.
Delete all contents except for definitions of _G_HAVE_MMAP and
_G_HAVE_MREMAP. Add commentary explaining those two symbols.
* sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/_G_config.h: Move back to
sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/_G_config.h. Make same content
change as above.

We can't go very far with libio cleanups as long as we still have
_IO_MTSAFE_IO, and I am not tackling that in this patch series,
but we can at least make the maze of stdio-related headers a
little less complicated.
In this patch, libio.h moves back out of bits/ into the top level of
the libio subdirectory, and is merged with libio/bits/libio-ldbl.h
(which also used to be installed) and include/libio.h. Since almost
no files include libio.h directly, this is quite straightforward.
libio.h is now always used with _LIBC defined, so all of the _LIBC ||
_GLIBCPP_USE_WCHAR_T conditionals are unnecessary. Similarly, the
ifdef nest surrounding the definition of _IO_fwide_maybe_incompatible
can collapse down to a single SHLIB_COMPAT check. I also took the
opportunity to add some checks for configuration botches to libio.h.
Installed stripped libraries are unchanged by this patch.
* libio/bits/libio.h: Move back to libio/libio.h and adjust
multiple-include guard to match.

We shipped 2.27 with libio.h and _G_config.h still installed but
issuing warnings when used. Let's stop installing them early in 2.28
so that we have plenty of time to think of another plan if there are
problems.
The public stdio.h had a genuine dependency on libio.h for the
complete definitions of FILE and cookie_io_functions_t, and a genuine
dependency on _G_config.h for the complete definitions of fpos_t and
fpos64_t; these are moved to single-type headers.
bits/types/struct_FILE.h also provides a handful of accessor and
bitflags macros so that code is not duplicated between bits/stdio.h
and libio.h. All the other _IO_ and _G_ names used by the public
stdio.h can be replaced with either public names or __-names.
In order to minimize the risk of breaking our own compatibility code,
bits/types/struct_FILE.h preserves the _IO_USE_OLD_IO_FILE mechanism
exactly as it was in libio.h, but you have to define _LIBC to use it,
or it'll error out. Similarly, _IO_lock_t_defined is preserved
exactly, but will error out if used without defining _LIBC.
Internally, include/stdio.h continues to include libio.h, and libio.h
scrupulously provides every _IO_* and _G_* name that it always did,
perhaps now defined in terms of the public names. This is how this
patch avoids touching dozens of files throughout glibc and becoming
entangled with the _IO_MTSAFE_IO mess. The remaining patches in this
series eliminate most of the _G_ names.
Tested on x86_64-linux; in addition to the test suite, I installed the
library in a sysroot and verified that a simple program that uses
stdio.h could be compiled against the installed library, and I also
verified that installed stripped libraries are unchanged.

This patch adds O_TMPFILE support to tmpfile on Linux. This is
similar to the previous suggestion by Andreas Schwab [1] with the
difference the file descriptor creation is parameterized to
compartmentalize Linux only open flags (O_TMPFILE) on sysdeps.
Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu.

__fortify_fail is called across DSO boundaries, so it should not
use a non-standard calling convention.

__stack_chk_fail is called on corrupted stack. Stack backtrace is very
unreliable against corrupted stack. __libc_message is changed to accept
enum __libc_message_action and call BEFORE_ABORT only if action includes
do_backtrace. __fortify_fail_abort is added to avoid backtrace from
__stack_chk_fail.

This patch adds a new build module called 'testsuite'.
IS_IN (testsuite) implies _ISOMAC, as do IS_IN_build and __cplusplus
(which means several ad-hoc tests for __cplusplus can go away).
libc-symbols.h now suppresses almost all of *itself* when _ISOMAC is
defined; in particular, _ISOMAC mode does not get config.h
automatically anymore.
There are still quite a few tests that need to see internal gunk of
one variety or another. For them, we now have 'tests-internal' and
'test-internal-extras'; files in this category will still be compiled
with MODULE_NAME=nonlib, and everything proceeds as it always has.
The bulk of this patch is moving tests from 'tests' to
'tests-internal'. There is also 'tests-static-internal', which has
the same effect on files in 'tests-static', and 'modules-names-tests',
which has the *inverse* effect on files in 'modules-names' (it's
inverted because most of the things in modules-names are *not* tests).
For both of these, the file must appear in *both* the new variable and
the old one.
There is also now a special case for when libc-symbols.h is included
without MODULE_NAME being defined at all. (This happens during the
creation of libc-modules.h, and also when preprocessing Versions
files.) When this happens, IS_IN is set to be always false and
_ISOMAC is *not* defined, which was the status quo, but now it's
explicit.
The remaining changes to C source files in this patch seemed likely to
cause problems in the absence of the main change. They should be
relatively self-explanatory. In a few cases I duplicated a definition
from an internal header rather than move the test to tests-internal;
this was a judgement call each time and I'm happy to change those
however reviewers feel is more appropriate.
* Makerules: New subdir configuration variables 'tests-internal'
and 'test-internal-extras'. Test files in these categories will
still be compiled with MODULE_NAME=nonlib. Test files in the
existing categories (tests, xtests, test-srcs, test-extras) are
now compiled with MODULE_NAME=testsuite.

getopt can print a whole bunch of error messages, and when used
standalone (from gnulib) it uses fprintf to do that. But fprintf is a
cancellation point and getopt isn't, and also applying fprintf to a
stream in wide-character mode is not allowed.
glibc has an internal function called __fxprintf that writes a narrow
format string to a stream regardless of mode, but it only handles
ASCII format strings, and it's still a cancellation point. getopt's
messages are translated, so they might not be ASCII. So getopt has an
error message to an asprintf buffer, monkeys with internal flag bits
on stderr to disable cancellation, and then calls
__fxprintf(stderr, "%s", buffer). There isn't even a helper function,
the code is duplicated every time.
This patch fixes __fxprintf to handle arbitrary multibyte format
strings, and adds a variant __fxprintf_nocancel that does the same
thing but also isn't a cancellation point. (It still _works_ by
monkeying with internal flag bits on the FILE, but that's not really a
layering violation for code in stdio-common.) All of the #ifdef _LIBC
blocks can then be reduced to their standalone versions with a little
help from some macros at the top of the file.
I also wrote a test case to verify that getopt really isn't a
cancellation point, and I'm glad I did, because it found two bugs, one
of which wasn't even to do with cancellation (see previous patch).

(locked_vfxprintf): New helper function. Handle arbitrary

gets has the dubious honor of being the only C89 library feature that
has been completely removed from the current C and C++ standards.
glibc follows suit by not declaring it in _GNU_SOURCE mode either,
but it remains present in older compatibility modes. Internally,
two test cases need to see stdio.h make the declaration, but all our
internal code is of course compiled under _GNU_SOURCE. This is currently
kludged by duplicating the gets declaration, fortify wrapper and all,
in include/stdio.h. Also, the conditional in the public headers for
deciding when to declare gets is complicated and repeated in two places.
This patch adds a new macro to features.h that encapsulates the
complicated rule for when to declare gets. stdio.h and bits/stdio2.h
then simply test __GLIBC_USE (DEPRECATED_GETS), and instead of having
a duplicate gets declaration in include/stdio.h, debug/tst-chk1.c and
stdio-common/tst-gets.c can force gets to be declared.

Extending linknamespace tests to cover libcrypt showed that crypt
brings in references to snprintf, but is in XPG3 and XPG4 which don't
have snprintf. This patch fixes it to use __snprintf instead,
exporting __snprintf from libc.so at version GLIBC_PRIVATE and adding
libc_hidden_proto / libc_hidden_def accordingly.
Tested for x86_64 and x86, in conjunction with the testsuite changes
to enable linknamespace testing for libdl and libcrypt. Also tested
(compilation only) for powerpc to make sure there were no problem
interactions with the optional-long-double handling for snprintf.

This patch added a new fmemopen version, for glibc 2.22, that aims to be
POSIX complaint. It fixes some long-stading glibc fmemopen issues, such

relative to buffer size instead of first '\0'. This is default mode and
'b' opening mode does not change internal behavior (bz#6544).
* fix apending opening mode to use as start position either first null

fflush_unlocked into a weak alias for __fflush_unlocked and calling

POSIX until the 2008 edition and so isn't in various standards
containing the syslog functions. This patch fixes this by making
dprintf into a weak alias of __dprintf and using __dprintf as
appropriate.

shared libraries are unchanged by the patch).

syslog (XSI POSIX) brings in references to fputs_unlocked (not
POSIX). This patch fixes this by making fputs_unlocked into a weak
alias for __fputs_unlocked and using __fputs_unlocked as needed. (No
linknamespace test XFAILs are removed because there are other failures
from syslog as well.)
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and comparison of disassembly of
installed stripped shared libraries). Disassembly of installed
stripped shared libraries is unchanged on x86_64; on x86, I see some
small changes to instruction ordering and register choice, with no
apparent reason for such changes to be related to this patch, but they
also seem completely harmless with no change to code size.

open_memstream is new in the 2008 edition of POSIX. However, the
older functions getopt, closelog and fmtmsg all bring in references to
it. This patch fixes this in the usual way, making open_memstream
into a weak alias of __open_memstream and calling __open_memstream
from the relevant places.
Tested for x86_64 and x86 (testsuite, and that disassembly of
installed shared libraries is unchanged by the patch). 32-bit builds
produce an XPASS for conform/POSIX/unistd.h/linknamespace after this
patch (because the only cause of failure left there now is 64-bit
specific); that will disappear once the 64-bit failure is resolved and
the XFAIL removed at that time.

While trying to get nptl/tst-initializers1.c to include the test skeleton, I
came across a couple of speed bumps. Firstly: after making the appropriate
changes to the test, running `make check' led to this error:

So, `wint_t' is used before being defined. Question: Why did test-skeleton.c

Anyway, I noticed include/stdio.h includes stddef.h, which in turn defines
`wint_t', but only if `__need_wint_t' is defined. So I put in a
`#define __need_wint_t' before the include to get rid of the error. Is that
the correct fix?
A subsequent `make && make check' led to this second error:

__get_nprocs is called from malloc code, but calls fgets_unlocked,
which is not an ISO C or POSIX function. This patch fixes it to call
a new __fgets_unlocked name instead.
Note: there are various other uses of fgets_unlocked in glibc's
libraries, and I haven't yet investigated which others might also be
problematic (called directly or indirectly from standard functions)
and so need to change to use __fgets_unlocked.
Tested for x86_64 (testsuite, and that disassembly of installed shared
libraries is unchanged by the patch).

tzfile.c is brought in by various ISO C functions, but calls fileno,
fread_unlocked and ftello, which are not ISO C functions. This patch
adds names __fileno, __fread_unlocked and __ftello for those
functions, making tzfile.c use those new names.
Note: there are various uses of fileno elsewhere in glibc that I
didn't change, although it may turn out that some of those also need
to use __fileno.
Tested for x86_64 with the glibc testsuite. Changed line numbers in
tzfile.c cause changes in assertions, and for some reason this ends up
with different instruction choice and register allocation, affecting
the size of __tzfile_read and so making comparison of disassembly for
libc.so problematic.
