2011-10-31net: Add export.h for EXPORT_SYMBOL/THIS_MODULE to non-modulesPaul Gortmaker
These files are non modular, but need to export symbols using the macros now living in export.h -- call out the include so that things won't break when we remove the implicit presence of module.h from everywhere. Signed-off-by: Paul Gortmaker <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com>
2011-10-19net: add skb frag size accessorsEric Dumazet
To ease skb->truesize sanitization, its better to be able to localize all references to skb frags size. Define accessors : skb_frag_size() to fetch frag size, and skb_frag_size_{set|add|sub}() to manipulate it. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <eric.dumazet@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Commit 60d9f461a20ba59219fdcdc30cbf8e3a4ad3f625 ("appletalk: remove the BKL") added a dereference of "sk" before checking for NULL in atalk_release(). 2011-03-21net/appletalk: fix atalk_release use after freeArnd Bergmann
The BKL removal in appletalk introduced a use-after-free problem, where atalk_destroy_socket frees a sock, but we still release the socket lock on it. An easy fix is to take an extra reference on the sock and sock_put it when returning from atalk_release. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-03-05appletalk: remove the BKLArnd Bergmann
This changes appletalk to use lock_sock instead of lock_kernel for serialization. I tried to make sure that we don't hold the socket lock during sleeping functions, but I did not try to prove whether the locks are necessary in the first place. Compile-tested only. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-11-07net/appletalk: push down BKL into a atalk_dgram_opsArnd Bergmann
Making the BKL usage explicit in appletalk makes it more obvious where it is used, reduces code size and helps getting rid of the BKL in common code. I did not analyse how to kill lock_kernel from appletalk entirely, this will involve either proving that it's not needed, or replacing with a proper mutex or spinlock, after finding out which data structures are protected by the lock. In all rx'd SKB cases, atalk_rcv() either eventually jumps to or falls through to the label out:, which returns numeric 0. Numeric 0 corresponds to NET_RX_SUCCESS, which is incorrect in failed SKB cases. This patch makes atalk_rcv() provide the correct returns by: o explicitly returning NET_RX_SUCCESS in the two success cases o having the out: label return NET_RX_DROP, instead of numeric 0 o making the failed SKB labels and processing more consistent with other _rcv() routines in the kernel, simplifying validation and removing a backwards goto Signed-off-by: Mark Smith <markzzzsmith@yahoo.com.au> Signed-off-by: David S. 2009-06-17net: sk_wmem_alloc has initial value of one, not zeroEric Dumazet
commit 2b85a34e911bf483c27cfdd124aeb1605145dc80 (net: No more expensive sock_hold()/sock_put() on each tx) changed initial sk_wmem_alloc value. We must take care of the sk_wmem_alloc value being one instead of zero when no write allocations are pending. Reported by Ingo Molnar, and full diagnostic from David Miller. 2009-03-31proc 2/2: remove struct proc_dir_entry::ownerAlexey Dobriyan
Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL ->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting in module refcount underflow. We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops and ->data. But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment) and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give some thoughts. ->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for protection. rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm. And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular. We definitely don't want such modular code. Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller. So, let's nuke it. Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12454 Signed-off-by: Alexey Dobriyan <adobriyan@gmail.com>

2008-11-12netdevice: safe convert to netdev_priv() #part-4Wang Chen
We have some reasons to kill netdev->priv: 1. netdev->priv is equal to netdev_priv(). 2. netdev_priv() wraps the calculation of netdev->priv's offset, obviously netdev_priv() is more flexible than netdev->priv. But we cann't kill netdev->priv, because so many drivers reference to it directly. This patch is a safe convert for netdev->priv to netdev_priv(netdev). Since all of the netdev->priv is only for read. But it is too big to be sent in one mail. I split it to 4 parts and make every part smaller than 100,000 bytes, which is max size allowed by vger. This patch includes many places, that only required replacing the ctl_table-s with appropriate ctl_paths and call register_sysctl_paths(). Nothing special was done with them. Signed-off-by: Pavel Emelyanov <xemul@openvz.org> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2008-01-28[NET]: Convert init_timer into setup_timerPavel Emelyanov
Many-many code in the kernel initialized the timer->function and timer->data together with calling init_timer(timer). There is already a helper for this. Use it for networking code. The patch is HUGE, but makes the code 130 lines shorter (98 insertions(+), 228 deletions(-)).
